I remember this. At the time I was a flight attendant with Northwest. I fly into DTW the day after this happened and we had to taxi pass. My heart just dropped. Was and is such a terrible accident. I remember my Mom had called Northwest to make sure that I hadn't been on that flight. If I remember correctly the flight attendant sitting in the aft jumpseat went to jettison the tail cone in the back...and it failed. Still brings tears to my eyes.
