Luger winning the WCW Championship from Hogan on Nitro is still an all-time classic moment in the Monday Night Wars. You can still hear Detroit going crazy to this day.
In retrospect I knew Raven wasn't gonna get a real good shot when he finishes a promo with "Quoth The Raven, Nevermore", and Okerlund responds with "Oh, don't give me that Edgar Allen Poe gibberish!" Way to help the promo, Gene.
I always found it ironic but fitting that Luger beat Hogan for the World title in the same building where he failed against Yokozuna at SummerSlam four years earlier.
I was totally into the Raven character. I thought his vignettes were awesome. And he was the first wrestler I ever heard tell an opponent (Scotty Riggs) 'There's no reason for us to fight'. I wish the would have pushed him stronger both in WCW and WWF, but I suppose his recreational habits didn't do him any favours.
This month in WCW was lit as Fuck! From the moment the August 4th show started! This Shit was on fire! I fucking loved it then and I still love it now!!

HOLY SHIT!
@@iDeathMaximuMII Axel is almost as old as Mr. Perfect was when he died and he has had 1/100th of the career. So sad how there is a generation (or two) of wrestlers who's primes came and went and they never were due to bad booking and no creative. The Lost Generation
"Celebrating the 100th episode of Nitro on the 99th episode is the most WCW thing ever"😀. Similar to celebrating the 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania on the 24th anniversary....ahhhhhh wrestling...
dude i'm subbed, I can't wait for these guys to get to Goldberg's Debut (next month's edition no less!), and I definitely can't wait for 1999. I tried to ask via tweet to Bryan Alvarez if they reviewed WCW 1999 yet particularly the Club Le Vela Nitro episode, cuz there's a HILARIOUS story between Bull Pain and Van Hammer (via Botchamania 71). No response yet.
It’s kind of lunacy to say that pushing Malenko and Benoit to the main event scene would have saved WCW. What could have saved WCW was some normalcy to the booking and coherent angles.
Ultimately, it was all down to who had creative control, which, increasingly, was wrestlers with guaranteed contracts and no reason to try to make their part of the show good. This is both why Benoit and Malenko weren’t raised to the main event(everyone knows what Nash and Hogan thought of smaller guys) and why booking was nonsensical.
This is just awesome. I cant wait until we get to December and Starrcade :) I think with Jericho's music it was b/c they were afraid of bands or record labels coming after them. DDP's musicfrom this time period, which was a Nirvana rip off, is dubbed over too. So I think it was a combination of not having the rights and being scared of lawsuits the WWE just dubbed it over to solve an easy problem.
Unfortunately Starrcade won't be part of it, because they only include the Nitros not the PPV. But it will be awesome to here their thoughts afterword.
@@jonathanschmeh5709 oh yeah I got that, I didn't think they were going to cover the actual ppv. I just cant wait for the build up and the aftermath :) They will however be covering that Nitro where the NWO took over and made Nitro NWO Monday Nitro :)
That Hennig/Macho match infuriated me. I've been watching the Nitros in sequence and was happy to finally reach the point when Curt came in to WCW. ..and here he was in just a few weeks, in the main event against Macho. I had guessed that the nWo was going to rush in to 'save' Macho, then be followed by the Horsemen to solidify their push to get Curt on the team. BOY, WAS I WRONG. They completely screwed it up by having DDP show up. The nWo doesn't like him either. So as he's going after Curt, Macho goes against him, completely stealing the limelight from Curt and what could have been a good match between two old vets. As soon as DDP got in there, Curt was never to be seen again. Lex rushes in to help DDP and that's where it ends: DDP getting the spotlight when it wasn't even his f'ing match. What a joke. Curt was screwed by optics.
Amazing hearing him talk about not being able to take Stevie Richards seriously as a wrestler, and then how he just shows how compromised he is on how hard he defends AEW guys like genella and stunt. Hope it was worth losing his credibility.
Eric Reed When Bryan talks about Stevie Richards as backyard looking he is mainly referring to his gear, not his physique. He says as much when he talks about Stevie gets his shirt ripped off and calls it an improvement because he looked “something like a wrestler”. It wasn’t a change in physique that made him less backyard looking, it was a change in outfit. What’s more, both Janela and Marko Stunt have custom ring gear, stuff you can’t just buy in a Walmart somewhere, that’s why he’s okay with them.
@@Jazz_Jackhammer don't be naive. He doesn't criticize AEW due to zealots and the fact that meltzer is in their pocket. (He has admitted his bias to his friends from other podcasts, he knows if he held them to the same standards of logic and reality he would lose money) The gear was one point within 3 he made for knocking him on his look.
Eric Reed First, what were the other two points he made? Second, Bryan does criticize AEW when he thinks there’s something to criticize. His reaction to The Butcher and the Blade’s debut immediately comes to mind. Neither him or Meltzer are being paid by AEW, nor are they afraid of zealots from either side. They like AEW because it appeals to them from an entertainment standard. They’re allowed to like what they like and have their own personal preferences.

To be fair, Gene never had a problem with shitting on a gimmick - that's why he's 'Mean' Gene
