Gareth, I’ve noticed over the years that mass produced pies are basically “flavoured pasty containers”… the manufacturers must make a fortune in selling us flour-fat-water… I used to love the Birds Eye individual chicken pies that were “full” of chicken/peas/gravy… price was about £2.50 for 4… same pies now are just under £4 and nowhere near as good…it’s all about profit I’m afraid…
Food technologists and psychologists are employed by major producers now. Look at the makers of Cornish pasties - Ginsters, everything is proportionate. Now compared a smaller pasty maker, chalk & cheese (not literally)! As for homemade, Mmmm.
I live in Seaham, Co. Durham. We used to get Gelder's pies and they were lush hot or cold, I'm gutted they went out of business during COVID. The Fraser's looked more inviting to me from the start 😀
When i was a lot younger my Mother used to give us all a Mince Pie ( Scotch Pie ) drenched in an oxo cube after watching the wrestling on T.V with the baddie Mick McManis and Big Daddy throwing each other around a ring. The Pies were a ritual together with the wrestling.
I am sure Frasers used to be only available in the Scottish store so I am really glad I caught this one as I wanted to try them :). Had a Holland's steak and kidney pudding the other night and I have sent a complaint in, I actually found meat in it 🤣.
Used to be a hollands fan, now make our own and they taste better and run out cheaper. Started doing hot waster pastry, massive improvement in pie quality
Soggy bottom because you used greaseproof paper. It holds the steam from the pie base stopping it from crisping. Put the pie on preheated metal baking tray...no soggy bottom. Great as always Gareth
I go into Aldi and get Kilmarnock pies as I’ve bought them before a football match in Kilmarnock, and I must say the shop ones are totally different from the ones I bought in Kilmarnock. They are not cheap either at around £1:50p each, I will definitely be checking out those Frasers Steak and gravy pies very soon. Thanks for the review Gareth, keep up the good work.
Hollands went down hill in the 90's when the company was bought out. As soon as meat and potato changed to potato and meat they were never the same. Shame really!
The first ingredient in the name of the pie is the dominant ingredient - meat & potato is mainly meat, with some potato in it, whereas potato & meat is mainly spud, with only the occasional bit of meat in it! I’ve often had meat pies that were predominantly gravy, despite not having gravy even in the name!
You may have reviewed the Frasers pies without knowing about it as I am more than certain these are Bells Food Group pies re branded and packaged for Aldi as Frasers. It certainly looks like a Bells Pie and the packaging is very similar
Got banished from work yesterday ( health care assistant ) due to testing positive for Covid ( again) Eight days with no pay . Your videos cheer me up 🎉❤
Well thank you Gareth 😅! I can't buy either, here in Belarus! They have no idea of pies😅😅😅! But just the way the Aldi Fraser pie looked.... 👌 Presentation is everything.... Still trying to work out why I enjoy watching your videos so much, as I can't buy any of them to try myself? 🧐🤔🤔
Hate Tesco and their Club Card prices - most of the time just massively inflated so that it looks like you’re getting a good deal. Morrisons started doing it as well and so actively avoid buying anything “on offer” unless it’s a truly good deal and it’s something I want/need. Funnily enough I just had beef and onion pies with roasties, mash, yorkie puds, peas and lashings of bisto pigs in blankets gravy! Mmmm!
So glad someone has mentioned this BULLSHIT pricing policy, forcing you to buy more than you really want, because it's cheaper when buying 2 etc, the single price is set stupidly high. Loads of shops doing the same thing now.
I watch you every single day mate. I thoroughly enjoy the channel and you have gotten me through a tough time. Youve even inspired me to start a podcast about my favourite team aston villa. Top guy
Great review Gaz I think you are right the Fraser pies look the part and you get 2 for for 30p more Aldi wins again and there seems a pattern emerging with Aldi food 👏👏👍👍
Hi Gareth from Spain. I don't count minced meat in a pie as steak, it could be any old offcuts minced up. Steak pies should have pieces of steak not mince.
Check again strands of beef , neither were minced . traditional Scotch pie has minced lamb and although the Frasers pie looked like a Scotch pie it was strands of beef in it .
Gareth, said before. I love pies 🥧 😊😊Frasers pie the look of a Scots pie. But i think,a true Scots is made with mutton? However, both lacking gravy and looked a bit " claggie". Still some buttered baked beans & a pile of chips that'll do me😂❤ Rib sticking British grub😊keep the cold& sniffles away with good old stodge 😊 Another good video mate❤ Allan&Family
Never eaten a mutton pie in Scotland, it's either steak pie or scotch pie which contains mince. Prefer steak pie myself, if you ever get the chance to go to the highlands, to Inverness and the Black Isle then the best pies you will ever taste are from a baker called Harry gow. Best steak pies I have ever tasted, in my life, and none of this Gregg's crap made in a factory they are all made fresh.
I was just thinking that the frasers one looked like a traditional mutton pie. Very popular at the football. If at home the rim is perfect for filling with beans, the way it sizzles when the beans meet the molten fat, is a thing of wonder. I do love a good steak pie from the butchers, in fact it is my greatest loss since leaving the old country.
You can still get the Scottish steak n gravy pie supper out of Scottish chippies, as well as the normal Scotch pie, you can also get those Hollands shape pies in Scottish chippies but they are called Ashet pies or something, if in doubt ask for a steak pie supper.
As a kid, Holland's pies were the go to supermarket pies. Now days I would never buy them. I don't know what happened but they ain't what they used to be. The only Holland's product I would buy today is the steak and Kidney pudding.
If one uses a proper beef OXO cube (must be OXO), add minimal amount of boiling water, pinch of salt, one crack of pepper and large knob of butter, mix well and pour on most warmed up pies (except Ginsters), it will transform the taste to best comfort food. Thanks Gareth
That twin pack looks a treat Gaz. And an excellent price. A resounding yes from me. I enjoy these videos so much, I wish they were an hour long. Top of the range job Gaz.
Yeah Aldi pies all day long i get them for work sometimes and are tasty ,Tesco are just overpriced and im not impressed with their stuff. Cant beat a good pie 😋 👍
An oldie! pies! Love a pie. Only had Hollands meat puddings, never pies don't think they sell them in London.Never seen Frasers either. Glad you enjoyed the pies know you do like a pie. Thank you for the great vlog enjoyed it. Sue
Blinded by %'s, at last count it was 158% in a pie - I like the mashup up of "clear labelling" and "listing of ingredients". I wonder if it is used to provide a rosy picture to anyone who wants to look at the list and work through war and piece.
Gareth, thank you for your entertaining videos. It feels like being part of a family being subscribed to your channel. I really look forward to hearing your views on all these products. Keep going mate.
A good quality pie with great pastry, plenty of top quality filling is getting harder to find these days. And musshy peas are almost a thing of legend, so hard to find. Sad to see basic foods becoming rare.
Hi, I live in Australia. Growing up musshy peas were an add on in every pie shop, but that was 60 years ago. Yes, there are canned musshy peas from England and they're very expensive, a luxury. So now you can buy a pie with peas inside but that's it. I love steak and kidney pies with musshy peas, but they are almost impossible to find a pie shop that still sells them as a separate add on. Australia is losing it's Englishness.
Thanks Gareth a good review, I will definitely try the frasers pies, good value too, 👍 I didn't like the look of the other pie, looked a bit pale to me,
What you want Gaz is a Kilmarnock Pie from brownings the bakers, you can get them online, without a doubt the greatest steak and gravy pies ever, actually have steak in them 😉
@britpackdog4545 About Kilmarnock Pies? Brownings and the football club had a disagreement, they had relationship for years but club tried to trade mark the name ' Kili' so Brownings pulled the plug on supplying the pies to the club, bit stupid since the pies are constantly rated best football pie in UK
Have to concur - the Frasers pies (as far these things go) are very nice indeed - their traditional "Scotch" Pies are great as well. Often get them as a guilty treat now and again. Hollands used to be amazing, grew up with them, being a Lancashire born lad - but they've been disappointing for quite some time now.
Another good one Gareth, I've got the Aldi mince beef pies at home ready to try. Just watching this video whilst enjoying a surprising good double whopper meal from Hindpool Rd Burger king
One of your comments mentioned not being able to find mushy peas,Iceland sell Lockwoods frozen mushy peas and they are the real thing without having to soak them.
I’m sure I’ve said this before but as a person on a low food budget I like to keep below 10 pounds a day for food . Love them Aldi pies mash peas and gravy ❤
you get what you pay for, the Frasers individual steak pies are a Scottish traditional individual steak pie, ie round with puff pastry top, my local butcher makes fantastic steak pies , they are filled to the top with big chunks of steak and gravy, but it costs £2.50 for one but it has 4 or 5 times the steak of a Frasers pie, so i reckon £2.50 is a great deal, but the likes of Frasers pies are most likely sold by company to a middleman who sells them to a supermarket chain and they all get there share of profit, where as my local butcher sells direct with no middlemen involved, hence for me i feel it's a better deal, but not everyone has time to visit a local butcher shop and a supermarket is more convenient, so the Frasers pie will work for them, i've seen me make a batch of mushy peas and have a individual steak pie from my local Butchers and that has made my dinner
Had these, there decent enough, not seen the individual Holland pie, but a frozen pack in Farmfoods. Aldi do the Kilmarnock pie, it’s more expensive than the Frasers, but more tasty. But for out n out value, the Frasers is good. You also get bells, but their larger steak round, is full of gristle. I normally stick to a butcher’s individual steak pie, pricy but decent steak. Mass production one’s are less in quality and meat content.😊
In my neck of the woods, down South, we had Gillards pies in chip shops, they were delicious, thick gravy with a lot of flavor. They disappeared and were replaced with, 'Peters' pies, gravy thin and watery. They got replaced by Pukka pies, which when they first emerged the filling was similar to Gillards. Now even Pukka seems to have changed the quality of the filling as they became more commercial and more widely available.
Love my pies, I cook things from scratch after I watch you eat, I'll be making pies again, on a diet again, I'm on twitter with pics of food I've made after watching you😊, I'm the radio bam that cooks , cheers, apologies for any spellings I'm visually disabled
The Scottish one looks great . Here's a recommendation next time you are in Asda l got one of their Minced beef and vegetable pasties ( yellow label just essential range ) cooked in the airfryer for 10 mins couldn't believe how nice it was..just like a cornish pasty but off memory about 50p ... their cheese and onion are also good.
I usually buy peters pies or pasties. They cost a bit more, but they're usually good quality. But if I go to aldis I'll be looking out for the Frazer's pies.
The Fräser's pies look just like Scotch pies. Dunno why Aldi doesn't call them by that name. Also, on first glance, the Holland's pie looked rather insipid and there was too much pastry to meat filling. I've immediately written down the Fraser's on next week's shopping list, but I wonder whether Aldi will stock them in southern stores.
Scotch Pies are completely different due to the filling. The most famous Steak and Gravy Pie is the Killie Pie - which is filled into the traditional Scotch Pie pastry and made by Brownings of Kilmarnock. You won't get a better steak and gravy pie if that's your thing.
Pie playlist 😂 - brilliant, you are one of a kind matey, keep up the great work, you are doing us all a great service here and providing a few good laughs too 👍
I just put two chicken and mushroom pies in for my dinner and seen this vid uploaded, they from an Irish supermarket dunnes stores and are top quality and value, enjoy yours I will mine
The pies I buy are not cooked, so I cook them, let them go cold, then freeze them, when one is needed I leave it over night then heat up by convection, that is not cooking again.
Definitely eat your crusts make's ya hair curly. We need these kind of Chanels we are being royaly screwed from the super markets thanks pal every idea could save a penny or two but with good tasty food, I've had to cut down to two meals day so I could have decent sunday dinner which i look forward to, strange but you appreciate food more. Thanks mate keep on chomping. 👍🏻♥️💂🏻♀️🇬🇧
Who ate all the pies? ... We all did, because pies are delicious! 😋 ... Pies are probably one of the GREATEST foods of all time! ... They always get my juices flowing! EDIT: I've NEVER seen Frasers pies in Lancaster Aldi. You pulled the pies out of the WRONG SIDE of the packaging! ... You should've pulled them from the right-hand side! ... Now the pies are ruined! 🤣 ... It's like opening a bag of crisps upside down! David Winfield's "lovely scales!" ... I dream about David Winfield's scales!
Hello bud another corker of a video. Another pie for my shopping list. Those Holland pies got dryer about a year ago I used to buy them but not now. Can't wait to give the Frasers a try. Nice one bud bye for now. 🤗😃🤚✌️👍
Followed you from around 18k subscribers, and you have totally changed my shopping, cooking and eating habits. I swear I will never buy another food-factory sausage, burger or pie for as long as I live. Now I make all my own, from scratch. I still watch every video, but purely for entertainment.

Do they still make the pitta breads down in Seaham ? I helped build up the machinery inside the factory when it was built
The words "Geld" and pie should not be used in the same sentence. I am holding my conkers right now! 😂😂😂

Soggy bottom because you used greaseproof paper. It holds the steam from the pie base stopping it from crisping. Put the pie on preheated metal baking tray...no soggy bottom. Great as always Gareth
I thought he baked it in the foil tray?
@@SuperLittleTyke He was referring to the Frasers pie that had a soggy bottom, not the Hollands that was heated in it's foil tray
@@SuperLittleTyke I meant the Fraser's one...sorry I should have said
Respectfully disagree GPP is fine as long as the oven temp is right. Better browning and no sticking than things like foil.
Yes was afraid of spillage on the tray. Save on washing up 😂

Hollands went down hill in the 90's when the company was bought out. As soon as meat and potato changed to potato and meat they were never the same. Shame really!
Ahh that's how they get away with the lack of meat filling, I dodn't twig that one, the ones I had were pretty disgusting tbh.
Nevertheless, the Holland's potato and meat pie is tastier than the Pukka one. For me, anyway.

They are in the same wrapper

I've gone veggie our kid. Doing somany Brussels I've blown myself away!!!!
Put the pie in a sandwich bag and seal it. That way it won't dry out in the fridge.
Ever tried the Xsell pollock at Heron? Very nice.
Not yet
we have aldis come to our town next year so i will certainly be trying their pies
Both looked a bit unappetising to be honest.lf you ever get a chance Gary try a pie made by Voakes, they are absolutely delicious 😋.
The Frasers really do remind me of the pies that my late father-in-law used to make. For context, he was from Dundee.
I prefer the Frasers as well, they look much more appetising.
Gday BFG. Thanks for da vid. Made my day. Ben from Perth Aus ❤
Glad you enjoyed it
Pie playlist 😂 - brilliant, you are one of a kind matey, keep up the great work, you are doing us all a great service here and providing a few good laughs too 👍
Thank you kindly
I just put two chicken and mushroom pies in for my dinner and seen this vid uploaded, they from an Irish supermarket dunnes stores and are top quality and value, enjoy yours I will mine
Sounds great!
Do love a pie , my fave is Bells Chilli Scotch Pie you get them in Iceland and farm foods pack of 3 frozen dunno if you get them in England, r
I have just had a Hollands pie,I cook 4 at once to save on Electricity and freeze the other 3 till needed.
The pies I buy are not cooked, so I cook them, let them go cold, then freeze them, when one is needed I leave it over night then heat up by convection, that is not cooking again.
I would say average, but only eat them now and then when in the mood.@@MonkeyHunch1

Another great review……I’ll try the Frasers next time
I have to say Gareth I much prefer the Aldi ones 👍🏻👍🏻
Just on visual,I say I choose frasers 👌👌🙌☺️
I eat with my eyes every time
Who ate all the pies?
Cheers pal
Followed you from around 18k subscribers, and you have totally changed my shopping, cooking and eating habits.
I swear I will never buy another food-factory sausage, burger or pie for as long as I live. Now I make all my own, from scratch.
I still watch every video, but purely for entertainment.
Keep it up
Just a thought, potato cakes and crumpet comps ,warbis vs the rest😊
Good one cheers
Broken packaging once opened, you could buy some resealable sandwich bags?
Yes, good point
