In the anime I don't think his change of opinion was as well laid out as in the LN. At the very least barely anyone picked up on what he saying to Gilgamesh on the bridge after the Excalibur scene. The only thing I'd say was directly out of character was her initial reaction to Iskandar's mean words in comparison to how she reacts to Gilgamesh & Shirou tearing into her in Stay Night, (though one could argue it's character development), and she's a lil' submissive against Kiritsugu considering she's probably older than him by that point and is literally King Arthur. She needed to just tell him to stfu and do things her way if his way was being a backstabbing little worm, she knew what she was doing.

Smart play. Fate Zero expects you to know a lot about Fate already. I started with the DEEN anime, then Zero, then the VN (with pron...), then watched UBW when it came out in 2014. Felt that was good enough. Now I am into everything.
Yeah, I'd say the best choice is either Zero or Stay Night if going into Fate. Stay Night helps introduce the setting. Zero, despite it assuming you know how things work already, I find does it well enough that it's a decent jumping on point as well. From there, you can branch off into whatever catches your interest.

UBW first to hook animation and tsundere fans, Zero next for backstory, Heaven's Feel next for true chronology and Fate last. As for the spinoffs, Case Files is next priority. Grand Order should be after Apocrypha and Last Encore for Final Singularity. Then of course Prisma Illya. Dead last because there's no easy way to convince someone to watch something of that nature Tsukihime (does a terrible job at it) but will help with understanding Kiritsugu's backstory cuz of the whole Dead Apostle thing and Kara no Kyoukai will give you a better understanding of the Root and Mystic Eyes (?) as well as give you a slightly better understanding of the enemy in that one Case Files OVA. Can't fit stange Fake into this till I give it a watch but it's still airing at the time I made this comment so you should probably watch it last so it can accumulate episodes Finally, things like Today's menu for the Emiya Family and Carnival Phantasm are comical watches and don't require a deeper understanding of the franchise to really enjoy, but will definitely help to have, like Emiya mentioning Fionn Mac Cumhail or Type Venus and Angra Mainyu appearing in Carnival Phantasm's final episode or the entirety of Fate/Grand Carnival. This "read the visual novel and don't you dare do things in a different order than me" approach is braindead. I have 31 hours in the FSN visual novel and am barely past the final battle against Berserker in the Fate route. If you go by the 3-episodes rule that a lot of anime-junkies abide by, and just read the first 2 hours or so of the visual novel, you wouldn't even make it to the first servant battle. I'm not trying to denounce the worth of the VNs, heck I'm a big fan of FHA, but I would have never gotten into it and never bothered with the series as a whole if back then my friend had forced the VN upon me. That's just not how you get someone to try something new. There's nothing wrong with "recommending" the VNs, but you gotta have a more open mind about this stuff and let people enjoy stuff. Under every single Fate/Zero reaction video you can find some VN-puritans that can do nothing but complain about how bad it is to start with Zero - or the animes overall - and how much their favorite blonde PNG supposedly got butchered.

The routes build upon each other, there's a natural progression. Shirou at the beginning of Fate route is a very different character from Shirou at the beginning of UBW. It doesn't make sense timeline wise, but it makes sense when you read the novel as a complete piece. Shirou gets over some things in Fate route, that he no longer has to wrestle with in UBW. So, leaving out Fate route is like telling a person to start a book 1/3rd in, just because it's "more exciting" and we have to "make concessions". The reason why ufotable didn't adapt Fate route is not because Fate route is irrelevant, it's because an adaptation of it already existed. This is the sort of dumb discussion that is super rare to fandoms of long running things, cause it's common sense to start at the beginning 90% of the time. The answer is simple, UBW and HF are built on Fate, so you need to see/read Fate first. Zero is built upon the original 3 routes and spoils major mysteries from all three, so watch/read Zero last.

Though the text speed was definitely faster than how I'd read it if I wanted to properly immerse myself in the story. So I think it's fair to assume that someone who's less used to reading would take 3-4 hours for the prologue.

People say skip Deen/stay night, but realize is mandatory to understand the main story of stay night as a whole. You recommend the anime if that person is open minded and knows that the first adaptation is very flawed, you recommend UBW or zero because they’re close minded. Well, some people might not make it past Deen Stay Night. If you are already committed, that's fine, but others will stop watching when they get bored and that will be it for the series. Also, name something that you wouldn't understand if you skipped Deen Stay Night. I can't think of anything.
Honestly, as a guy who started with Fate:Zero when it was on netflix forever ago, i'd say that while it might not be an "optimal" way to get into fate, it's a decent enough place to start as it not only still explains WTH is even going on, but the Ufotable adaptations released in the order of: Fate:Zero, Fate:UBW, Fate:Heaven's feel (movies). So I'm pretty sure the idea of the Ufotable productions being in that order is not to simply be a prequel, but to also just start.. from zero. Even non anime enjoyers can get behind Fate:Zero due to the refreshing lack of many anime tropes found in most anime (everyone is in highschool, too much anime centric/culturally different humor/comedic relief, fanservice, etc), so while it IS an anime, it feels like a good show with some actual grit and stakes. Honestly, besides some classics like Trigun which does happen to lend itself to more traditional anime conventions that I do recommend to newbies to anime, Fate:Zero is the other newbie friendly anime I'd honestly recommend and also newbie Fate anime. So even if many if not all disagree with my opinion on the matter, i still think it's a great beginner anime due to the ease of transition to anime as a whole.

People say skip Deen/stay night, but realize is mandatory to understand the main story of stay night as a whole. You recommend the anime if that person is open minded and knows that the first adaptation is very flawed, you recommend UBW or zero because they’re close minded. It’s simple as that - I’ve been a fate fan since..well 2019 and I never understood skipping Deen’s anime. I watched it because …it’s literally the first and my rule for watching or playing stuff in order is just start from the first that came out as it was intend because squeal tends to come with the knowledge of what happened in the first entry. It’s easy and simple to comprehend- but no, the deen’s anime is garbage and we have to make it complicated for newcomers
Well, some people might not make it past Deen Stay Night. If you are already committed, that's fine, but others will stop watching when they get bored and that will be it for the series. Also, name something that you wouldn't understand if you skipped Deen Stay Night. I can't think of anything.

Honestly, as a guy who started with Fate:Zero when it was on netflix forever ago, i'd say that while it might not be an "optimal" way to get into fate, it's a decent enough place to start as it not only still explains WTH is even going on, but the Ufotable adaptations released in the order of: Fate:Zero, Fate:UBW, Fate:Heaven's feel (movies).
So I'm pretty sure the idea of the Ufotable productions being in that order is not to simply be a prequel, but to also just start.. from zero.
Even non anime enjoyers can get behind Fate:Zero due to the refreshing lack of many anime tropes found in most anime (everyone is in highschool, too much anime centric/culturally different humor/comedic relief, fanservice, etc), so while it IS an anime, it feels like a good show with some actual grit and stakes.
Honestly, besides some classics like Trigun which does happen to lend itself to more traditional anime conventions that I do recommend to newbies to anime, Fate:Zero is the other newbie friendly anime I'd honestly recommend and also newbie Fate anime.
So even if many if not all disagree with my opinion on the matter, i still think it's a great beginner anime due to the ease of transition to anime as a whole.

instructions unclear, I started with FGO, Fate Samurai Remnant, and then Fate zero because EVERY SIGNLE youtube video told me fate zero. They also said to not watch stay night but im going to after I finish zero

Watch UBW, HF and Zero and deal with the fact you can't understand everything because the basic story isn't that hard to get. It's just the intricate lore pieces.
