Her name was Brenda Ann Spencer. She lived across the street from the school. She didn't have a sniper rifle so to speak. She was using a little Ruger 10/22 semi auto .22LR. She just sat and calmly picked off eight kids, the principal, a teacher, and a police officer. Only a few people died but she laid out over thirty rounds. The 10/22 uses little 10 round rotary magazines so she was swapping mags. First known school shooting in American history.

I'm old enough to remember everyone talking about it man. It was the first time this stuff was ever even really thought about so it was talked about heavily for some years. Also, studying craziness is the best way to potentially see understand and avoid the crazies. This happened in like 78 or 79 if I remember correctly.

This song is not "an anthem" (or affirmative song) to shooting up schools. Quite to the contrary, it was a commentary from an Irish band about a bizzare and sad school mass shooting in America. At Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego in January 1979, a troubled 16-year old girl, Brenda Ann Spencer, had went to school and used a gun to shoot 11 people (two adults, eight children, and one police officer) killing two. She showed no remorse for the shooting and when asked by the police interviewer, "Tell me why?" And the girl answered, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up day." The songwriter/singer, Bob Geldof, then wrote the lyrics and performed the song one month later. The song hit NUMBER 1 in the UK for four weeks during the Summer of 1979. It also was a hit in the US.19

So maybe somebody could come up with a better song that would do what he was trying to do with that song. Don't forget, this song was before social media. He was trying to educate the public that we needed to start paying attention to the mental health of our children. School shootings is only the worst outcome of our blindness and indifference.... but a solid song on point. Some musicians do try to make a difference with their music. Yes, in the US. they were a one hit wonder. They were an Irish Punk band. The lead singer was in Pink Floyd's The Wall movie.

He was Knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his work for Famine Relief. He'd organized Band-Aid in the UK and recorded "Do They Know it's Christmas?", and was influential in getting USA for Africa to make "We Are The World". Then on July 13th, 1985 He was the man who created LIVE AID, Simultaneous concerts in Philadelphia and London featuring every famous band in the English-Speaking world at the time. This was where Queen gave the performance that every maker of reaction videos has to react to, or lose their Reactor Card.

Its crazy that way back then it was such an odd story that Bob read about in the paper and thought: "that would be an interesting and strange subject to write a song about". Now its such a common occurrence that it would probably be considered in bad taste to write a song about such a subject, when there always seems to be some sort of similar story in the news every month.

I don't expect The Boomtown Rats to be greatly known now-a-days, and I don't expect everybody to know the name of Band Aid's organizer.
But to recognise Sir Bob Geldof as the guy that played Pink in The Wall movie is a little blinkered. Bob Geldof is known by most people as the guy behind Band Aid. That Wall move is a footnote. It's like me saying that I didn't know that the OJ Simpson dude from The Naked Gun played Football.
Naked Gun should be a mere footnote next to other things that have surrounded OJ Simpson's public profile.

What you said about "this song wouldn't fly in 2018" - is totally missing the point - it was about an event that had already happened... ! to draw attention to the issue of disaffected teens - and this one being a girl was highly unusual -- this was WAY before "Columbine" and many other school shootings -- the thing was to NOTICE when kids are at risk for acting out in violent ways... "and Daddy doesn't understand it - he always said she was Good as Gold" -- wake up, parents, to what your kids are up to, or how down they may feel!

Brenda Spencer took a rifle and started taking potshots at her school from her upstairs apartment. Fortunately, it was a little before school started that day. She killed the principal and a janitor, and injured 8 students. When cops asked her why she simply said, "I don't like Mondays. I want to shoot the whole day down". Bob Geldof was known for spearheading Band Aid and Live Aid and this song was to promote gun control. Boomtown Rats had many hits in the UK but this was about the only one in the states, thanks to the early days of MTV.

If you have ever seen the movie "The Wall" by Pink Floyd Paul Geldof was the was the main actor. The creepy stuff comes from the fact that he is just creepy. Creepy or not he was the one responsible for that We are the World and all of those charity concerts back in the 80's. I highly Recommend "Fat Bottom Girls" by Queen. Also the Queens of the stone age Just trust me.

Although the song is part of my 80s teens, oddly I'd never seen the video which still looks good now, let alone then. I certainly didn't know the context.
Good crap (a moderate swear alternative to shit: frigg or effing are handy milder alternatives to fuck/ing)

This song was about Brenda Ann Spencer. She shot up a school in 1979 killed 2 men and wounded a bunch of children. When she was asked why she showed no remorse and said "I don't like mondays." . Thats where the name of the song came from. I don't think its an anthem for school shootings. I think its an attempt to understand why she did what she did.

The world was shocked by this tragic shooting. We were shocked that it was a young girl and her flippant response. Little did we know that it was a sign of things to come. We took it quite differently back then to how I realise it must seem now if you don't know the story. Lead singer Bob Geldoff is a legend who has raised millions in aid relief for famine stricken Africa.

how funny we both described it as an anthem! I started typing before you finished.. Another song Rat Trap was sort of played on the radio in the US. They did much better outside of the US in terms of album and single success. His biggest success (with Midge Ure) was LIve Aid which was built off of the success of Band Aid single Do They Know It's Christmas which was the first all star single to raise money for Ethiopia.. It was before We Are The World.

Bob Geldof was visiting a radio station in Atlanta when the telex machine printed out the news of the school shooting, including the famous quote. 16 year old Brenda Spencer, who lived across the street from the Grover Cleveland elementary School in San Diego was given a rifle for her 16th birthday by her father (even though she had already had a psychiatric diagnosis due to a head trauma she had experienced -- her psychiatrist found her to have sociopathic tendencies). She shot out the window into the playground. Fortunately no kids were killed. If memory serves, the deaths were, the principal and a janitor (I believe a cop was injured)... I'm going from memory, too lazy to look up on Wikipedia, but just trying to condense the story. Police found her inside her apartment and arrested her. Reporters on the scene asked her why she had done it. Her reply was, "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day." Geldof was moved to write the song, which was released soon after the event in early 1979.
Spencer, now in her late 50s, has been up for parole multiple times but continues to show no remorse and has been denied parole multiple times.
