1:46 absolutely spot-on. I noticed this in my second of the MANY viewing of this confrontation. It’s almost like someone pulling their punches… Tom knew he would knock out Shiv with this line and hesitated for a full second but then decided to go through with it. Season 1-3 Tom would’ve never said something like this but I guess this is what infidelity, constant humiliation, disregard for feelings and your very humanity does to a person
Have to agree x10. I’d go as far to say it’s one of the best scenes I’ve seen in any show ever, really. It’s so emotionally loaded and the acting is so overwhelming I had to pause it on my phone after watching it the first time to just let it sink in a bit. And it’s also crazy that while I liked this episode it wasn’t especially amazing until the last 10-15 minutes or so including this and the Matsson and Kendall scene which was also a pretty fantastic scene. Just give them all the awards.
At 1:20, I also wondered if Shiv got worried for a brief second that Tom knew she was pregnant. Shiv keeps drinking alcohol every episode; it seems like she in fact won't have his baby.
Playing Tom Wambsgans would be any Actor's dream role. Myriad of emotions from start to end in one single episode only. And it goes without saying that no one could have perfected Tom except Matthew Macfadyen. He is just an incredible actor. Hope to see him holding his 2nd Emmy soon.

Such complexity, truly an outstanding scene. You can see how deep Tom's comment about Shiv not being a good person to have children hits her. She never wanted children, scared she'd end up like her mother and her children would end up like her, now she finds herself pregnant and the father says out loud quite venomously what she's been thinking about herself all along.
And... they end up together after all the things they've said and done to each other and Shiv seems to become Caroline. For three seasons Succession had been at the top of its game but for season 4 it literally felt unstoppable. Truly one of a kind.
Not unnoticed was when Caroline saw Shiv for the first time in a while, before she was pregnant. The quick glance, look, you can almost miss it, and then a deep sigh “Well then!”
He wasn’t wrong either, Logan Roy should never have had children, it’s generational trauma played out. In Shiv’s defence, most people shouldn’t have children. Tom is another character who shouldn’t. What a great show.
I have lost count of many times I have watched this clip. Its an absolute masterclass in acting. Possibly the rawest, most honest conversation between to 2 people who have hurt each other’s endlessly, up to the point of cruelty which almost makes it impossible to watch. The writing is perfect, the acting is perfect and setting too is precisely right. Its a the type of conversation you don’t want to be part of and yet desperately want to hear every word of. Truly masterful.
They both killed this scene - I just loved how finally we get the raw emotional reaction from 2 characters. No more of the tip toeing around the problems with satirical comments and whimsical jokes. I feel there is a few other characters that also need scenes like this.
I feel like Roman's version of this is on its way with his eulogy for Logan. I'm kinda shocked he even offered to give the speech - I think he has yet to realize what it will require of him emotionally.
I love the line "you never deserved me" because she's saying it from a place of superiority, but it's still true because Tom didn't deserve to be mistreated and strung along by a narcissist.
I think that’s what makes the show good because there’s so many angles to each character but it’s also the father’s fault because that’s what he said to her that she could do better than him, but she settled with him
I love the dialogue on this show so much. Little details like Tom saying “prison” while Shiv referring to it as “jail” to show how she’s minimizing the risk he faced while he’s maximizing it. Just really great stuff.
He said "love" in the present tense. Also, Shiv did go to her dad (on the yacht) and made him promise not to sacrifice Tom; Logan sacrificed Kendall, instead. Perhaps underneath it all, they *do* love each other. Shiv was broken, from awful parenting, and didn't know how to recognize or accept real love. She sabatoges the progress of their relationship. Getting "for real" close to someone can be murky, raw, and terrifying.
Am Fantastic point. I wish Shiv had brought that up when Tom said she betrayed him. But then again, Shiv said nothing when Nan Pierce conditioned the deal on Tom being removed from ATN.
I mean, given how poorly Shiv treated Tom, she does have a point that he stayed with her because of who she is and the benefits. Like, how can you "love" someone that doesn't value you and cheats on you?
I love how every nasty thing they both said about each other is 100% true. Shiv and Tom were right about everything they said. This is a couples argument where there were no winners. Just mutually assured destruction.
@@pwnatehExactly, Tom was speaking from authenticity (observations he wishes weren't true) while Shiv spoke from insecurity (preconceptions she claims as true). She wasn't nearly as accurate in her observations as Tom. She was trying to poison his well while he was holding up a mirror so she could face her own reflection. It's a tragic scene.
I think most of the things they said were totally true and deserved. The thing for Shiv is that she's never heard it articulated. People criticise and mock Tom constantly -- he knows his place and is happy to muddle along with no dignity as long as he can cling to power & money. Shiv though? She's the daughter of Logan Roy. Nobody tells her the truth or criticises her.
"You don't deserve me, you never did. And everything came out of that." A line that encapsulates the tension in their relationship succinctly! Even though there are instances where he displays real feelings for her, he also 'does' use her as a ladder. Brutal stuff.
I think you’re wrong. He always wanted to get to the top with her but later on he also said to forget everything and have a fresh start somewhere else. She just isn’t capable of loving and caring or be loved and cared for because of her childhood
He is striving, but wanting professional success and loving someone are not mutually exclusive. That’s what shiv is missing because she’s always seen these two things as diametrically opposed. Tom nailing her so perfectly here tells me that he does love her because he’s taken the time to understand her deeply. It’s what gave him staying power while she crucified him with her infidelity and “open relationship” pitch on their fecking wedding night. She describes him as servile, when it’s really his ability to comprehend motivations and digest them that gives him a sort of emotional shock absorber. When you love someone you try to truly know them. He demonstrated here that he does know Shiv, including her underbelly.
The worst part is “you’re not a good person to have children”, him saying she can’t be a good mother in general, no tthat he doesn’t want to have children *with* her. And her saying he doesn’t deserve her. Repressed pain and anger that we saw starting to boil since her mom’s wedding episode, coming back to hunt them both.
@@rebelfriend1818 I never said she wasn't gonna win. I fully believe she'll win, especially now that she's away from Jennifer Coolidge. I'm saying she has a plethora of content to choose from for her episode submission for the award.
2:51 When Shiv begins her speech by wanting to hurt Tom and says "you don't deserve me and you never did", the hatred that Sarah Snook puts into this line soon breaks into sadness when she says "and everything came out of that", remembering everything that happened, the death of her father, Tom's betrayal, the loss of her marriage... What an acting masterclass!
I love how everyone inside were so polite they decided to ignore the yelling from outside so they could both wripp each other to death, they were all drinking Tom´s fine wine, class act.
The writers are clearly accomplished wordsmiths churning out clever quips and clapbacks, but most of this is simply direct and invites the actors to dance instead of programming fancy verbal choreography
Yeah, the directness of this scene felt incredibly earned after four seasons of doublespeak and coded language. The characters' fear of intimacy is baked into most of the dialogue, so the earnest moments hit like a train to the face.
@@michaelotis223 Sorkin is more combative, so like fight choreography, though of course still fancy and coordinated; I feel like Jesse Armstrong is more like a gymnastics floor routine, like the “ta-da!” is baked in
Tom Wambsgans got what his concerns of money and desire for "nice" things earned him. When a man goes the "First, I look at the purse" route when dealing with a rich woman, this is what you sometimes get.
I legit stopped breathing watching this scene, this scene was STUNNING. We knew this was always quietly rumbling among the smiles & awkwardness. But wow, it finally came out & I am stunned
It is says so much about Shiv’s character that she characterizes Tom’s selfless commitment and willingness to make a personal sacrifice as him being “servile”. She can’t comprehend a way in which a personal sacrifice is not some form of failure or indicative of a flaw.
2:38 Tom finally realised that shiv is essentially just a grown abused child, who resorts to malice as a defence tactic. 3 minutes is the point that even Shiv herself realised she doesn’t believe the things she’s saying, hence the bork from her. Very sad and shows that wealth does not shield children from abuse. Beautiful scene.
The genius of "Succession" is that 99% of the dialogue is snappy one-liners and lies, but that 1% where characters finally speak the truth is utterly heartbreaking every single time.
I love that you can hear Sarah and Matthew’s accents come out towards the end. It adds such a raw element. You can see them both get so into the thick of the scene and into the heat of the moment. @@etsisk It's just hard to watch the first few episodes. Then you get invested and can't look away from the ongoing trainwreck, so to speak. It 'helps' because: examining incredibly destructive, broken people is important. The show is about generational trauma at heart.

End of season 3 made me think this relationship was over. But after Logan died, they looked like they were coming back there. This scene killed everything.
It feels so real. Tom genuinely loves her and knows deep down she doesn’t love him because she can’t love anything. Shiv argues like a 6 year old brat who is just trying to hurt him. When she’s finally honest that she doesn’t care about him, she thinks she’s hurting him but it’s only confirming what he already knew and he finally has his feelings validated by his partner for once.
Genuinely one of the best scenes of TV I've ever seen. This has been an incredible final series, it's always been a great show but it's reached god tier in the last few weeks.
A perfect scene perfectly played. Something that really conveys the realism of a fight like this is how trivial, bugging elements like the "undrinkable wine" get thrown in as ammunition. It's very much a "And you never empty the dishwasher!" argument.
I like how, at the end of the argument, all they can say now is “I don’t like you” and “You don’t deserve me” All the hurtful things are out of the way, now they’re emotionally grappling with the bombshells
I've watched this clip so many times I've lost count, and it never gets old. I love the acting in this scene so much, and all they conveyed both verbally (while maintaining their American accents) and non-verbally. I think this should be something that is standard to be shown in theatre/film classes. How this is show that nobody I know irl has seen other than my mother is very frustrating.
Tom offering to go to prison was a trust game that went wrong. I've known couples where one person will offer to do something difficult or painful for themselves or friends, knowing that their partner loves them and will chivalrously step in to prevent them. The person offering is allowed to look generous and noble, in the certainty that they'll never be asked to follow through. Tom played the game but Shiv didn't openly step in, so he was left feeling vulnerable and unloved.
This was the most powerful scene of all seasons. They both deserved Academy Awards for this scene. I am glad “woosey” Tom finally got the nerve to tell Shiv who she really is . . . BROKEN!!!
Yikes!Shiv was pretty cruel and I honestly think Tom standing up for himself was long overdue. But he also got very cruel with the parenting comment.2 people in so much pain😓
Eh, Shiv had it coming with that one. Her biggest problem is her inability to face her own problems. Of all the Logan's children, Shiv is the one whose weakness is probably the most profound at this stage and creating the biggest drag. While the criticisms she's taken are cruel, they are true in the end. Probably the one comment Shiv's never lived it down was the comment from her mother telling Shiv she shouldn't have kids, because some people are not made to be (good?) mothers. Tom came to that conclusion on his own.
@@simonnot8487 Tom telling Shiv that "perhaps, she should not have children" is probably the biggest cut he could have made, especially not knowing that Lady Caroline told Shiv the same thing and his, I believe, not realizing that Shiv was running amok carrying his child.

shiv is such an infuriating character, refusing to acknowledge how much she's hurt and abused tom, and of course tom is really awful in his own way too. So brilliantly written, both of them
That's what growing up with Logan as a father did to her. All the kids are emotionally stunted and unable to be genuine because they grew up with pathological liars and manipulators.

@@MarkElders She’s not knocking back glasses, she’s taking sips (at most) of single glasses. They’re keeping up the ambiguity.
The actors reading your comment: 😐 yeah, that's exactly what we planned 😅
That gesture when Tom says "broken" is just brilliant
Emmy 😂😂
I wonder if an action like that was created by the writers, the director or the actor at that moment. It's so telling.
@@jlasfdon’t think it was in the script so it might well have been improvised
At that moment she was defeated
No doubt improvised. Brilliant
That line " I gave you endless approval, and it doesn't fill you up because you're broken." summarizes narcissism of Shiv so well.
It will be said in her defense that she is only capable of loving herself because her parents are definitely not white and knew what "love" is
Playing Tom Wambsgans would be any Actor's dream role. Myriad of emotions from start to end in one single episode only. And it goes without saying that no one could have perfected Tom except Matthew Macfadyen. He is just an incredible actor. Hope to see him holding his 2nd Emmy soon.
I think he was born to play Tom. It shows the true range and depth he has, I bet even Matthew didn't even know he could possess 🩵
I think he has always been a great actor, this part just introduced him to an American audience.

@@lepythagore3288Shiv becoming Caroline is some of the best poetic Justice I’ve ever seen

Yes. The show needed this scene
Tom finally standing up to Shiv and saying everything that's been brewing up inside him for a while is so satisfying. This scene really is remarkable.
“It’s not my fault you didn’t get his approval”
Tom….you’ve killed her
I love the line "you never deserved me" because she's saying it from a place of superiority, but it's still true because Tom didn't deserve to be mistreated and strung along by a narcissist.
Shiv doesn't deserve tom 😂
No, Tom deserves it. He mistreats everyone he has power over. Everyone.
I think that’s what makes the show good because there’s so many angles to each character but it’s also the father’s fault because that’s what he said to her that she could do better than him, but she settled with him
Are you insane? Shiv is literally the worst character/sibling out of all of them. @@Upsallauniversity123
@@iOakieI think that's what they mean when they say she doesn't deserve him lol. They didn't say "Tom doesn't deserve Shiv."
Am
Fantastic point. I wish Shiv had brought that up when Tom said she betrayed him. But then again, Shiv said nothing when Nan Pierce conditioned the deal on Tom being removed from ATN.
I do believe she loved him but love has always been a thing to mock in her family and she was unable to see it as anything other than a weakness.
I mean, given how poorly Shiv treated Tom, she does have a point that he stayed with her because of who she is and the benefits.
Like, how can you "love" someone that doesn't value you and cheats on you?
"You really kept me safe while you ran off to f*** the phone book"
Cracked me right up.
I love how every nasty thing they both said about each other is 100% true. Shiv and Tom were right about everything they said. This is a couples argument where there were no winners. Just mutually assured destruction.
When she said he doesn't deserve her, I thought it was the other way around (:
I dunno about the "your mom loves me more than she loves you" line.
Mutually assured destruction is the most beautifully poignant thing to be said about their relationship
Idk about offering to go to jail line, felt more like it was bait, shiv at times lied cuz she couldn’t handle what was being said about her
I think most of the things they said were totally true and deserved.
Um no? Have you heard how much Logan criticizes and mocks his children
The music of Succession is just so magnificently beautiful

And he says it not knowing she is pregnant.

This scene is one of the many reasons this show is a 10/10. The writing, acting, & character development in this show is top tier.
The writers are clearly accomplished wordsmiths churning out clever quips and clapbacks, but most of this is simply direct and invites the actors to dance instead of programming fancy verbal choreography
Beautifully said. This scene works so well because of the excellent dialogue and the powerful acting. It's a masterclass.
Yeah, the directness of this scene felt incredibly earned after four seasons of doublespeak and coded language. The characters' fear of intimacy is baked into most of the dialogue, so the earnest moments hit like a train to the face.
"Fancy verbal choreography"
*Aaron Sorkin left the group chat*
@@michaelotis223 Sorkin is more combative, so like fight choreography, though of course still fancy and coordinated; I feel like Jesse Armstrong is more like a gymnastics floor routine, like the “ta-da!” is baked in
She was so right when she said he never deserved her. He deserved a looooooot better.
That's right, he does not deserve her, he deserves Greg.
Tom Wambsgans got what his concerns of money and desire for "nice" things earned him. When a man goes the "First, I look at the purse" route when dealing with a rich woman, this is what you sometimes get.
This is what I mean, he used her for her money from the beginning but she’s the bad guy and he deserves better cuz she slept with someone else. Lol ok

It's almost poetic
And someone deserves a backstabbing social climber?

He’s so used to her having her guard up with sarcastic quips he didn’t expect to hit her this deep to the point where she became an incoherent mess
I rewatch this scene every month or so. This is bar none some of the most amazing acting I've ever seen.
The genius of "Succession" is that 99% of the dialogue is snappy one-liners and lies, but that 1% where characters finally speak the truth is utterly heartbreaking every single time.
This is the scene that won them both Emmys. Much deserved
I love that you can hear Sarah and Matthew’s accents come out towards the end. It adds such a raw element. You can see them both get so into the thick of the scene and into the heat of the moment. "You dont deserve me and you never did" Could be true in the sense that he didnt deserve to love someone who treated him like an afterthought.
This scene really felt cathartic in a way. For four seasons all we saw were treacherous opportunists who backstabbed each other at any given chance. And this moment of raw pure honest human emotion really blew me away. Just amazing acting and writing!

The scene after this where Tom gets everyone to leave the party was one of the most heartbreaking scenes on tv.
Wdym it was funny
It was that awkward embarrassment when dirty laundry has been unintentionally waved in public.
"Night, Tom."

The catharsis from this convo was legendary. Years of buildup where the understood was unspoken and festering all leading up to this raw explosion.
Phenomenal scene. This was painfully beautiful.
I was mesmerized by Matt’s acting throughout this entire show. Incredibly underrated actor
A perfect scene perfectly played. Something that really conveys the realism of a fight like this is how trivial, bugging elements like the "undrinkable wine" get thrown in as ammunition. It's very much a "And you never empty the dishwasher!" argument.
I like how, at the end of the argument, all they can say now is “I don’t like you” and “You don’t deserve me”
All the hurtful things are out of the way, now they’re emotionally grappling with the bombshells
Watched this scene twice during the episode and have clicked it every time it pops up on UA-cam. Still hasn't got old.
It's been less than a week since it aired. I certainly hope not. 😄
They're both not American, yet are having a heated full blown argument with perfect accents. So glad they both won Emmys 😊
One of the greatest scenes of all time. Blows me away every time I watch it
This was the most powerful scene of all seasons. They both deserved Academy Awards for this scene. I am glad “woosey” Tom finally got the nerve to tell Shiv who she really is . . . BROKEN!!!

Shivs malignant narcissism on full display here she’s definitely the most like Logan all her relationships are transactional.
He did give her that Scorpion though. Hah real funny.
