Great idea Dean will be make some . I had student here today when I watching this he like it to .I think he is going to start watching you as well.👍👍👍👍
I woke up thinking about how I was going to try and save $80 by making my own sander to sand a Vase I'm doing and then this video came up on my feed. Perfect. Great tip.
Hi Dean, Thanks for sharing. I have made some of these for myself. I really like using them. I have made one for each grit that I use that way to change grits I just gram the next stick with the next grit and away I go. I mark the stick with the grit size on the dowel. I use a larger dowel which is easier to hold and will not flex when using it. I take the foam and a forstner bit and drill hole in the foam the size of my dowel. I then use a 5 minute epoxy to glue the foam on to the dowel. I have not had the foam come off the dowel yet. I have shared this video with several of my friends and they all like these sanding sticks. Thanks again for your videos. I have learned lots from watching your videos. I like your teaching style. Keep up the good work.
I found this to be particularly useful information. None of us are getting any younger, and anything that will help me adapt and keep me turning longer is much appreciated. Thanks for the demonstration.
great idea, Dean. I have all the materials on hand and think I will give this a try. If something gets caught up it is much better to have a spiral fracture in the dowel than in one's finger!
Great idea Dean! When I worked in the recieving department in a plant, I grew to hate styrofoam, and have cussed it ever since! I cringed watching you go at it with a skew! Even with my hatred of foam packing, that IS a very useful piece of equipment, and I would use one of those sticks for sure! Now.....I DARE you to find a legitimate use for the foam peanuts........lol
Hey Dean, I love your videos. I made some of these after watching your video. Great idea since I work in IT and have a lot of that material that the computers are packaged with. I drilled a hole smaller that the dowel rod and just dribbled hot melt glue in the hole then inserted the dowel. Seemed to work and hold good also. Thanks again!
Great Tip Dean... Hopefully will keep peoples fingers out or their bowls and hollow forms... and attached to their hands... Love it.. will be on my to do list while attending the meeting tonight..Thanks Again.
Very good idea Dean. I don't have any of that type foam but I bet I can find some in the dumpster behind Wal Wart. Since they would be so easy and cheap it would be a good idea to make several. One for each sanding grit. Thank you for sharing. Have a great 2022 and you stay safe too. 😃😃
Another great use of packing foam (especially computer packaging foam) is turning practice. Especially for those tools that most are scere'd of....ie the SKEW. The foam medium will not hurt or damage anything if the wrong tool presentation is done & you can fine tune your sharpening ability as if your getting good clean cuts on foam, well that will translate to wood. All in the technique, we don't plow!
Good idea. Any sufficiently long scrap will work. For example, a 1x1x12" could easily be chucked up even without jaws like yours and then turned into a handle/wand with an end approximately 3/8".
Dean. I have a Lathe that has the motor on the side, and it sticks out past my drive center. When I mount a piece of wood to turn a bowl, I am limited to the size I can turn. Do they make drive center extenders and where can I get one 1" x 8 tpi. Thanks Tim
I hve not seen a spindle extension you can get morris taper extensions. you may be able to get a local machine shop to make you one. What kind of lathe is it?
Great idea. Where do you get the Velcro? I’ve never had very good luck with the type with adhesive on it. I buy the kind for sewing and glue it with CA glue.
Tom here; Splendid idea, Dean!!! Thanks so much!!!
Glad you liked it!

That is awesome! I did not think of using hot glue but no reason that would not work great and so much simpler to do. Thanks for Watching!!!

Thanks Tim I hope so too!!
Yes, this! (looks at bashed thumb, looks at screen, looks back at bashed thumb)
ouch that hurts! I hope this helps

Glad you enjoyed
Thanks Dean
Very welcome
Great tips.
Thanks for Watching!!!
This is a great idea!!!!! Now I’m going to be looking for packaging to make these out of.
Thanks Cindy good luck!!!
This is a great idea
Thanks Doug and it sure makes sanding the inside easier.
Genius 👍
Thank you Michael!!!

Very good point you do not have to use a dowel you could make one!! Thanks Josh!!
I will be making me some of these
Awesome have fun and be safe. Thanks for Watching!!!
Great video Dean. I also keep & use packing foam for sanding purposes.
Great tip! So do I especially for profiles. Thanks Dane
Thank you for the great tip. I just subscribed and am looking forward to any more tips that work for you.
Thanks for the sub Bob, and Thanks for Watching!!!
Thanks for sharing this idea!
You are so welcome!
Great idea. I used a piece of copper pipe insulation the same diameter as my dowel. Seems to work well.
Great idea!
I had good results gluing the stick into the foam with a hot melt glue gun. Goop worked too, but it took 24 hours to cure.
Adding the packaging foam is a good idea. I made some from the “garden knee pad” material but they were flat. Having the curve is beneficial.
Thank you!!
Thanks for Sharing
My Pleasure, Thanks for watching!
Good video
Thanks Timmie!!
Excellent ideas, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Very innovative. About how long does one of your sticks last?
until you drop it in shavings and then step on it. litterly I break them before they wear out. Thanks for Watching!!!
Great idea! This should save a few fingers!
Or fingernails
Thanks!!
hopefully both!!
Can't you use your drill chuck with the moris taper for the small dowl
not really it would be too far extended and woud not run true. you need something that the dowl will fit through.

That will work as well the secret to getting the self adhisive to stick is put it on and let it set for 24 hours.
Dean, great idea thanks for the tutorial. Where did you get the handle for your skew? I like the compact design
Thanks The handle is a Sturart Batty Taper-Lock Handle they come in multiple lengths. heres a link www.woodworkersemporium.com/brands/SB-Tools.html
