Ive lost so many friends over the years that were once sincere and meaningful. Slowly they transformed from active members of my life down into artificial clicks and interractions between avatars. No matter how much I reached and pulled, I could no longer get conversations and in person meetings from anyone, but they are always all eager to like, comment & send someone elses curated content. Couldn’t take it anymore and deleted and cut everything and everyone off. Done waiting around for people who are lost in the sauce.

Sadly, you nailed it. I am lonely too - I used to have a lot of friends, but one by one, they disappeared, or rather I did, because I don't go along in this 'social' media bonanza. I have one/two friends left, I see them if I'm lucky three hours on friday night. Then they talk about stuff they talked about in their watsap (sorry, a language joke) groups. Last week I checked my incoming calls so far this year: not ONE was a casual one, a friend or a relative just calling to check on me or to have casual conversation. And I wonder how people fall in love these days - when you go out, you can sit four hours in a bar like you're a ghost. Maybe I am one.

When i grab it off the fridge to put in my pocket to go to work, when i take it out of my pocket after work to put it on the fridge, last thing before i hop into bed, mainly to see if my almost 90 year old mother has left a message. As it lives on silent no one can ever get me. So, leave a message or send a text and i will see it eventually. It is so So SO good not being chained to the phone.

These days I never plan anything with anyone. Any "plan" you make just goes into a bin of possibility for the other person, that can be changed at a whim. These days, if I'd like to meet up with someone, I tell them where I am going and when, and I invite them to join me. Then I forget about it. I make my plans and carry them through alone. If that person shows up, then I switch gears and enjoy that. I never have to wait for an answer, or deal with multiple redirects, or any of that. II don't end up having my invitation to them switched around to where they are inviting me! t also tells you pretty quickly where you fall within their priorities, say 1 through 10. It's probably not where you think. People always make time for the things most important to them. Always. I miss the 60s and 70s.

I've quit Facebook back in 2010 and never did any social media anymore, unless you count UA-cam as social media (it's a video hosting website IMO).
I'm at a few forums though, mostly to nerd out on my hobbies, but that's way different from actual social media.
Social media is just a waste of time, wasting time to show off how wonderful you are.
I know no one gives a crap about me, so I know that there's no point in showing off on social media.
I'm all on my own, and so are most people... but most people decide it's something bad and so they don't want to live with that fact and need to escape it.

I NEVER worry about anything anyone else is pretending to be on social media! I literally have 10 friends on Facebook and no other social media, and I still don't pay attention to anything they post, and they never pay any attention to anything I post, tbh I just watch silly cat videos every now and then! I spend literally 90% of my life in my own company and I don't care! Most people are actually annoying AF these days and not even worth spending any time trying to get to know! The small amount of people I do actually quiet enjoy spending time with I hardly ever see, but when I do we have a great time! You don't need a million friends or contacts, it's only the past 10 years that was ever a thing, it's not normal, and it messes with your head!

I have had the same close friends for 30 odd years so I am lucky and we are all slack at connecting with each other cos we are busy doing our thing. They have known me as the crazy bike and guitar guy who is not very peopley since our teens and are cool with that. I get on UA-cam of an evening instead of watching tv or movies so i can choose what i want to learn. You are spot with your observations on the socials and phones in general. As i live out bush with three of my kids and don't get to town much I get on the social media of an evening on the weekend a bit like going to the pub is for some people, fire a few messages back and forth catch up then split but yeah if that happens in the morning the day is shot and no body i know is online to even interact with, just be mindlessly scrolling.

We've always been in a trance since the inception of organised theology. Phones just make it visually more obvious, it's a trance within a trance. It's actually a good thing, because when we become aware of one layer of unconsciousness, it's a catalyst for ongoing awareness of other levels of unconsciousness; resulting in heightened presence, consciousness and connection, with self/others/life itself. 😊

As a phone repair technician and delivery courier I sometimes feel too much of my life depends on being on my device. I tried to scale down my activities on it to simply job related and shut it off once I get home, it's kinda weird how "not normal" my activities feel and how my customers most of the times basically are addicts. I feel bad for them and try to promote responsible use of their devices, but most don't care at all, they just want stuff done or delivered ASAP. I wish to make enough money to not need to do this jobs anymore in a near future and travel around in my bike but it seems bleak since it has been already 4 years as a delivery courier and 10 repairing electronics, mainly phones.

It’s been nice being off the main social medias (twitter, facebook, instagram, snapchat, etc) since 2017. I’m very lucky to have never even had TikTok, seeing how addicted everyone is to that, and the only ‘social medias’ I use are UA-cam, Discord, and Reddit. Reddit is definitely the worst as far as time sucking/attention grabbing and I want to make a point to stop using it completely. I did set a timer for myself on my phone to limit it to 1 hour for reddit (because as you said there’s no such thing as a quick scroll haha) so that is helping but eventually i’ll bring it down to none.
The camping part is so true. My problem is it takes me 1-2 days out of service to get out of the headspace of “did I get new views on this video?/did my friend respond?/etc” before I can get in that groove of slow moving and slow thinking.

Same here, although I do find myself falling into some of the addictive tendencies with the mediocre discussions I start here.
I go down rabbit holes and emotionally invest myself in making points to people who aren't having a good faith debate, but rather are just proclaiming truths and have no interest in changing their minds.
I often wonder if that's what I'm doing, but certainly try not to.
I appreciate what I learn on this platform, but it's just as easily a way for me to take in content with which I already agree, only further convincing me I'm in the right.
      It's exhausting.
At least we have some awareness, but it's hard to know where to balance it.
I know I'm being surveilled too, and anytime I use the feed I'm being manipulated subtly.
But I still come back for more🤦‍♂️
