Same feeling, my father was pretty nervous after his retirement, almost stopped all social activities feels like he lost his interest. But when I told him this news he was never been so happy, after birth his grand daughter he is the most busy guy in house.

Don't dwell on things from the past, don't stress on your future. Just live your life, because you only get one. Do whatever makes you happy, not what other people want from you.
