    I picked up a refurbished 62stc after watching your other videos on scouting and going in blind. I've always stuck by my map and compass and didn't think I'd ever need a GPS, but my 62 in conjunction with the other mapping tools has helped me a bunch this year. It's pretty cool that I can take a picture of a tree a mile from the parking area with my GPS during the summer and find that tree in the pitch dark four months later using an entry route determined using aerial photography and a topo map. I can already tell it's going to be a great scouting for the off season and hope to inventory lots of rut sign to help put a game plan together for next year.

    Thanks for doing this video, never really liked my GPSMAP 62s because it had no topography. Loaded the maps and now it has very nice detail. Bought a handlebar Mount for my atv so now I plan to use it a lot more often. It will work great on the ice too this winter.

    The last minute of your Garmin 62s sold me,....the part on the Garmin vs. your Cell Phone. It's happened to me to many times, hence I'm treating myself to a Garmin GPS. Thx for your clip. Marc

    Thanks on the video. I was in the dilemma of either getting this unit or the 62st. This video helped.

    Really good review thanks. I got one on Ebay too for a good deal with three sets of UK maps. Only issues I have I can't ever complete the head-over-heels business for the compass. Other orientations fine just not the rotation front to rear. Also despite getting a Garmin lead the Mac doesn't recognise my device in Basecamp. It offers me maps to buy since it can't see any.

    I feel the GLONASS access which gets you from 10m accuracy to 3m accuracy combined with the 3 axis compass operation at least made this worth an upgrade from the 60csx to the 64s. Thanks!

    I have the 62 stc. I also put the birds eye on it. I love it. But I still have a compass with me. Can't beat them.

    I strongly agree RE the not touch screen for a hunting GPS. Since my first GPS in the early 90s. I've had several Garmins since including a pair of the RINO integrated gps and FRS comm radio. I've always found the handheld software excellent. I had one that stopped working after a 5 foot drop onto concrete in all these years. I wish now I had kept it done the work of disassembling. I currently carry a mid-1990s 48 Marine. Nope, never had it in a boat. If you go looking for a 48, you need to find one with the last firmware upgrade of 6.0. Should run you $40-$70

    Good testimonial. I'm looking at some of these as a GPS for flying an ultralight airplane, where you can quickly get lost up there in the air, because it all looks the same down there. If I can paste air navigation maps as jpgs on top of it, that would be great....

      Right you are. Getting lost and dead is the worst nightmare a pilot can encounter. But with a handheld GPS, there is a surge of confidence because the equipment is yours to operate with ease.

    is there a way to just put in coordinates into the gps to make a waypoint? for instance my deer stand?

    Wow great review!!! I'm looking to get one very very soon I found a few manufacturer refurbished ones on eBay around the same price around 225 for the 62s and st I need it for back packing trips and I do a lot of dual sporting so I'll be using it on the road. Should the st be the best option for me since the st has all the maps I need already! I wanna travel the us. Idk how much memory it would take on the 62s if I had to download it all. Is the st battery life the same as the s?

    just ordered a refurbished 62s. I am a first time hunter and for the most part having to do and learn everything on my own seeing as most of my freinds don't Hunt and the only family I have that hunts is on the other side of the country. I hate using cell phone gps. I ice fish and there is a peice of structure in 36 foot of water that comes up to 28 and is the only feature on an otherwise featureless lake. I have to tromp out to the.middle of this lake and drill 10 holes to find it, then another few holes so find the drop offs. It will be so.much easier to just male a breadcrumb trail.on the edges and make 3 or 4 holes where I want my tip ups to go and 1 to jig.

    Hey Garrett - I'm trying to load the Wisconsin topo map to my new Garmin 64S per the instructions in your video. However when I click "Maps" the WI topo map I downloaded doesn't show up. Also, when I click install maps on the internal storage of my GPS device it says no unlocked maps were found for this device. Any idea what I'm doing wrong or what might be happening.

      +Adam Prust Hmm, so you're able to download to Basecamp but then the transfer to GPS isn't working? I can't imagine it would be a compatibility issue. I would try turning the GPS off, removing the batteries, putting them back in, and attempting to re-download from Basecamp to the GPS.

      As always thank you for the prompt response. Actually shortly after I posted my question I noticed a message on the GPSFileDepot site stating: There is an issue with the 64-bit
      installer used in the PC version of this mapset. If this is the first mapset you are installing on a Windows 7 64 bit PC, you will need to FIRST install a mapset which used a 32-bit installer, 'My trails ....' www.gpsfiledepot.com/maps/view/53 works and is small in size.
      I downloaded and installed the recommended 32-bit 'My trails' mapset per their instructions, then downloaded the 64-bit Wisconsin topo map again and it worked!

    So can I use it without using the online topography site? Will I still see rivers, lakes, without going online? I’d like to just buy it and use it. Thank you.

    I'm not finding any hot deals on these. For a similar price, is the 64s a more capable model?

    Have you tried OnX maps?

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 років тому

      +Joseph Yarbrough Yes, I have the subscription for WI and the free version for Minnesota. It's a pretty great app, I just wish they had more subscription options and map drawing tools.

      Do you use the chip for your garmin or the app for smartphones? I have the app on my iPhone and I'm not crazy about it. If I go in somewhere that doesn't have service (which is most places I hunt), then I have to download that section of land beforehand. And when I get in there, it really seems to be slow and struggles to keep up. Wondering if I might be better off buying a handheld like yours and going the chip route.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 років тому

      +Joseph Yarbrough I have the phone app for my Galaxy S6 Edge. The screen size, brightness, and resolution on the phone is much better than the handheld. I also generally download maps beforehand, even if I will have reception so I don't use unneeded data. I would imagine that slow loading of pre-downloaded maps is based on the phone processor, but I'd like to think an iphone should do alright, especially if it's newer and doesn't have a lot of apps running in the background.

    • @DIYSportsman
      @DIYSportsman  8 років тому

      +Joseph Yarbrough That being said, I haven't tried the handheld chip version.

    • @sk8emerica177

      That was my thinking. I'll keep playing with it this fall and see if it goes any smoother. It's an iPhone 6 so the processor is fine, but only 16 GB so lack of space is also an issue with downloading the maps. Regardless, just subscribed to your channel. Really enjoy your videos and thanks for responding to my comment

    I do not use GPS as I use OS maps but I would never trust my mobile. There are so many rural areas where the signal drops out. I would prefer a GPS compared to mobile but you can't beat the old fashioned OS map for £5. I have never thought a GPS worth the expense for me but I agree they do have their good points but I would say for someone who regularly spends time in the outdoors as I do you probably will not gain from using a GPS.

      I have seen the benefits of GPS during hillwalks with my club. On a hill in winter when the fog drifts in and visible points of reference disappear it can give comfort. Maps and compass of course are always used but knowing how high and exactly where you are make for peace of mind when deciding the best route. I have actually used my phone's free Here Maps (I think!) on my old Nokia Lumia on the hill to identify the Scottish lochs we were seeing from on high. So I have just acquired the model being reviewed (second hand deal on Ebay) here and hope it will be useful on cycling trips as well as on the mountains.
