I just bought a Magellan 610 today. Canada Topo Maps included, all for half price! Hard choice between Garmin 62s and the Magellan. I would like to have a more rugged bracket for the Magellan on the ATV.
yes, the map62 will display your breadcrumb track. Depending on the maps you have purchased/installed, it can do navigation just like the nuvi and even show greater detail.
if you manage your tracks, either via basecamp or on the device, you "should" be able to see all the tracks no matter the map layer. The benefit, is that you can extract the info for a specific track like distance, elevation etc.. So, this would be keeping a bunch of GPX files on the device or SD card.
Nice informative video. Heading out today to buy a new GPS, this will be near the top of my list. Got to see them 'in the flesh' first though as something that looks good on screen might not 'handle' well which is important. Cheers for the overview :-)
Buenas tardes desde Costa Rica tengo un GPSMAP 62s, tengo el problema de que se enciende en la última ves de encendido, y los botones no funcionan, me puede ayudar. Gracias
Not a big deal except for surveying use, but all Garmin models do not recognize the difference on the location format the diff. between NAD83 or WGs84. So, any precise navigation to a coordinate, say from a survey in NAD83, you must shift that coordinate to WGS84 Before it is stored on the Garmin.
Wanda Davis just need to take 2 waypoints from start to finish and do you can measure the distance between the two via the device or download the data to your computer using garmin basecamp with the ruler. Or you can you Area calculation where you can just walk the perimeter.
as always your doing an awesome job! Thanks for the great videos, do you know a way to create a permanent layer on my map with all my tracks. Or build a custom map with my tracks so that I see all the trails I've to like a road on my gps... Thanks Jim
Hello, thanks for the video! I have a question: is it possible to charge the batteries when the gps is off? Do you know how long does it take to charge them? thank you! I have a 64s
Hi! I would like to ask about the maps of 62s.. does it also show where you going? I mean like the nuvi 50 where you can follow which road you currently located? does it also show streets if zoom in the maps? coz, I;m planning to buy.. Any information will help a lot tnx!
Hi Jim, What do you use for batteries? Some people say to buy some type of charger and other say that you can charge rechargeable directly in your gps. Is that the case and what would you recommend?
have owend 3 garmins. will be using handheld for biking. this looks like fast map rendering (important), but I'm just not digging this one. considering magellan 310/510 or this. man I hate macs. Anyways, your review was decent, just don't know if I like garmin (possibly not).
We use ours for Geocaching and when we come to a stop the GPS position varies by about 20m. Even though we are stood still the signal arrow moves around the map. Is this unit that innacurate?
Not at all, when others place a cache, they are using different units and combined with conditions you will have that kind of variance just as sometimes you get down to 0m
Jim Cyr But we will walk upto the waypoint on the map screen and stop. Then the arrow wanders around the screen upto 20m in any direction even though were arent actually moving!!
***** I might be wrong but if you are using the map screen, then the bouncing is due to the GPS reception and the device figuring out your direction of travel. If you are using the compass page, you shouldn't see that bouncing around.
I liked using gps on mini-tablet phone best though (fasted rendering plus google maps are the best!) and gps maps are the most wretched headache. 'navteq' or whatever? abominably horrible and buggy and overly expensive and wretched to install (almost all garmin users complain of that). long-battery life mini tablet with gps feature seems most resourceful. i don't think Any of those 'just only'gps devices interest me unless doing serious bushwhacking off-trail stuff but even then, meh.
meh. gpses are such a headache. I will be best with a mini tablet that has gps feature. 2006 magellan roadmate (over 5000km) useful garmin vista hcx meh really cheap black and white garmin meh 60csx meh didn't use it sold it magellan triton didn't use it sold it dakota 20. decent, not using it have some decent interesting maps loaded on it, suffices, but meh I was a bit obsessed withgps.
I still use mine a lot after all these years. Great, great piece of gear for any outdoor adventurer. Absolutely love it!
Thank you for this clip - just got a second hand GPSmap 62s, your tutorial got me started.
Excellent. Glad it is still useful 😀
Great vid Jim. My old GPSmap 60CS recently died, and my new 62S is on order!
other than the software has changed in terms of the UI, everything stayed the same. You should be up & running in no time :)
im getting mine at the end of the week! Cant wait!
Thanks so much for this guidance

I know what you mean, you want something that will fit your activities. good luck! :)

that's not a bad deal, especially since it included the topo maps which to me are essential.
i think you will be happy with the 62.
Hi! Thanks for the reply and it helps a lot! :)
buena Jim Cyr
I was wondering how you measure in feet from one spot to another. We clear land and thought this might measure the feet/yards we have cleared. Thanks

@OneManShowShow I'd take a look at the Oregon 350t. After I tried it, it made me regret purchasing the map 62...a little.
i said that the electronic compass will help with your direction of travel when not moving, but it does not effect accuracy

i'm trying to figure out how to get the belt clip off of the body... i decided id rather use it without. do you know how to take it off? thanks
yes, just push the clip into the device lightly and slide it down. It may be stubborn if you haven't done it in a while, but will come off.
thanks!

Nicole - I've never tried it, but I seem to recall that it wasn't possible.

See whether the device 16 GB card and do what is necessary optimally???
I don't quite understand what you are asking, but I think that the unit can support a memory card up to 32gb. So a 16gb SD card will work fine.
Many thanks!
If I use the backroad nb map do I need to change anything in the position format?
The gps is default to wgs84 and the sd card then you are good
This not the 62 model it is the 62S
