I read The French Lieutenant's Woman by John Fowles, a modern classic from 1963 and really loved it. It is a historical fiction set in the Victorian Era. I highly recommend it if you love reading about this era and if you love modern classics.

A very honest effort to appreciate a difficult book. I find some guys on the comments section not happy about Amelia’s perspective here, but pl give her some space. Sometimes it’s a pleasure to come across innocent and spontaneous reactions to work of art and her’s falls into the category.. Fowles’ novels, particularly this one, is very complex as he plays not only with time but with intense socio psychological themes. They say English novels do not measure upto the depth found in their continental counterparts, particularly when you take those created by Gogol, Balzac, Stendhal, Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Flaubert or Proust. For me the one coming closest to that standard would be French Lieutenant’s Woman.
To Amelia, 1963 may seem to you a long time ago, but that was right within the e and technology most happening period in human history both in terms of science and technology ( space missions, icbm, initial i etc) and of deep social changes borne out of aggressive social movements( women’s lib, civil rights, height of Cold War, on set of Vietnam, Beatles, global students’ unrest etc. The definition of morality and basic human relationships never went through such jolts as in the 1960s. No wonder Fowles took inspiration from all of it to dig into the hubris and of Victorian morality at the time. The interesting lines at the beginning of each chapter more than explain it.

Thanks for being honest again. The film is no less complex than the book. Harold Pinter, the famous British playwright, split Sarah’s character right down the middle to create the Victorian Sarah Woodruff and the modern star Ms Ruffwood. Mark the play with the surnames which sets the tone to visually narrate the psychological drama of Fowles. Not many would have the insight into the film medium to truly appreciate the movie.
