    Never thought about using my 100-500 for bugs. Usually pull out the 100 macro on my R7. I guess I have a new challenge. Thanks!

      I think I prefer it to the macro lens. No flash needed and I can still shoot birds. I can use the extender for more reach..... AND..... you can get aftermarket extension RF tubes and shorten the minimum focus distance down even more. Be careful if you do that as the do sometimes disconnect I keep on contact of my strap on the body and one on the lens. AF works perfectly and no flash needed. 🙏🤗💖

    Go Jony Pink!!! Too bad Canon doesn’t make RF extension tubes like they did for EF. But those were some pricey all metal tubes! I found that Fotodiox Pro RF extension tubes are metal and you can buy them at B&H. So I ordered a pair because I don’t want to use cheap plastic tubes on my 100-500!!

      I have some cheap MEKE ones. I do wish they made native ones as well. I did think I would use them that much so I just got the cheap ones. 🙏🤗💖

      @@JonnyPink65 I wish I was one of those fortunate few. Other than my CPS membership, I doubt anyone at Canon knows my name. Canon, if you're listening... (haha). Thanks again for pointing out my mistype error. I was the 2nd person in my local photography circle to get hands on the R7 but it wasn't from Canon or other promotion. Just a matter of waiting a couple months until they were in stock locally and picking it up.

      @@JeffandLeslie Canon does not know I exist either and that is OK with me. I am not invited to their event not am I likely to ever be. I sit online at my computer when the new shiny thing comes out I want, and hit buy now as soon as it goes up. I was waiting for a long time for my R7 and bought it as a grey market one since they were the only ones that had it in stock. I still watch their site. Thank you Chris!!! Still working on butterflies with the R8 LOL. It should be here tomorrow but now sure what time. If it is early enough in the day, I will go out in the evening. If not, then I will be going out on Thursday and will most likely use the 600 F4!! I would like to put something quick together like hummingbirds, dragonflies or damselflies. 🙏🤗💖

    Hey John, quick question for you. Right now, I shoot with a R8 and 100-500 and love it. But I feel like a need just a bit more reach. I'm cropping too much in and loosing too much detail. Do you think the R7 with its crop factor and high pixel count is the way to go? Or go with the R5 and crop in with its high pixel count. Appreciate any recommendations.

    • @ryanbroyles7487
      @ryanbroyles7487 26 днів тому

      to clarify I would also be adding the R7 to my bag. That way I have both cameras for different situations.

    • @jeffolson4731
      @jeffolson4731 26 днів тому +1

      I have both the R5 and the R7 as well as the RF 100-500, the RF 200-800, and the RF 1.4x. My normal walking around combo makes some people cringe, I put the RF 100-500 on the R5 and the RF 200-800 on the R7. That gives me 100mm to 1280mm of reach. I am usually able to avoid cropping.
      I would recommend renting each camera for a week to see what works best for you and your style.
      Keep in mind that even though the R5 is 45 MP if you crop into the same area as the R7 you “only” have 17 MP.
      I know that this doesn’t answer your question directly but I think you will be happier if you test each one first.

      I'm not John. I have been shooting the R7 with the 100-500 for about 18 months now (also have the 24-105 F4, 100 Macro, and a couple wide angles). Like someone below said, rent a copy of the R7 and see if it fits your style. I am well pleased with my set up. I came from Nikon DSLR (D500, D7200) and those were also great cameras but shooting video was an act of frustration. I find the AF on the R7 to be very good, yes, some rolling shutter but that is easy enough to work around (i.e. I have C2 set up with same focus areas, etc as my C1 but with mechanical shutter on C2. If I'm shooting running deer, birds flying, other fast moving subjects where I may have to pan with them, I flip the dial to C2 and fire away with mechanical. Colors are great, images are sharp, with the higher MP count, cropping, within reason, is not a problem. I like the system. Not perfect but none of them are, but it is a good match for my needs in nature and wildlife. Hope this helps.

      When I use the 100-500 on a full frame camera, I use the RF 1.4 extender. Still extremely sharp, no loss in focus speed but you are shooting at an F10 - no problem for the new bodies. The R7 is a awesome body, but it honestly is starting to feel outdated compared to the R50 believe it or not. The R8 you are using will outperform the R5 at this point too as far as AF. Use an extender or get the 200-800! 🙏🤗💖

    Good afternoon, I have a Canon R7, how would you be surprised by such a combination, a Canon RF 100-400mm lens + a Canon RF 2x extender?

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  6 днів тому

      I like the RF 100-400 on the R7. I did not try it with the 1.4 extender I have and since I do not have an RF 2X, I could not say. Canon Performance is pretty awesome, but I am not sure. Another inexpensive option on the R7 might be the RF 600 F11. Only a little more than the 2X and would probably give you better performance. 🙏🤗💖

    I´m a bit confused John. Why would you use an extender to shoot insects with a 100-500 lens? surely you don´t need more reach for that kind if photography? Does the extender reduce the minimum focus distance like extension rings?

    • @RogerZoul
      @RogerZoul 26 днів тому +1

      The extender increases the magnification since you are at 700 mm FOV rather than 500 mm. The MFD may be charged slightly, but that is mainly what extension tubes do. But to me, just the 800 mm FOV you get when you put the r7 on the 100-500 is enough and I think you lose a little bit of sharpness with the extender on, but you don’t with extension tubes on, since they have no glass inside.

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  25 днів тому

      The extender does give more reach and fills the sensor more while still keeping that awesome MFD. If you add aftermarket RF extension tubes, you can shorted it even more. All just good fun and the reason I like this over true macro is I dont need a flash!! 🙏💖🤗

    • @JonnyPink65
      @JonnyPink65  25 днів тому

      @@RogerZoul Exactly. You do lose infinity focus with the extension tubes though.... trade offs!! 🙏💖🤗
