    Thank you Amy! After waiting forever Accents in design finally came out with a foot I was willing to try. Your tip on adjusting the height was very helpful for prettier stitches. Moving smoothly in fm without the ruler and no hop is another adjustment for me, but it's coming along. I recommend your blog and videos all the time. Wishing you great success with the store, and thanks again for all of your sharing.

    I am so glad to see such a great video with you actually using a home machine. Most of the video's are using a sit down long arm and to me they do not apply to the home machines. I have two great quilting machines, a Janome 6500 and also a new 8200 qcp se that I got at Christmas. I am going to get a ruler foot and rulers and start to learn this, also going to take your class on Craftsy. Thanks for the great tutorail.

    I just wanted to say “thank you” for you tutorials on rulerwork. I originally found you through your Craftsy classes and tracked you down here. Those classes got me started on ruler work. After some initial tension problems were resolved, I bit the bullet and tried using ruler work on my latest quilt. I LOVED the results! My free motion skills are still a bit “primitive”, but the ruler work made me look like a pro! I also discovered that I can get a 1/4” ruler behind my foot. Perhaps because I have an IDF on my machine? I am fully in love with ruler work and seek to use it wherever I can. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and skills with all of us!

    I've watched MANY videos on ruler quilting and this is the ABSOLUTE BEST, most informative, I have seen. Your clear explanations helped me understand why I've had certain problems and how to avoid. Equally important is that you made me aware of potential problems, in particular using a hopping foot with a ruler. I did not know how to adjust the ruler foot correctly so if considered using the hopping foot to see if it would work better. Thank you for a great video and for sharing your experience.

    Amy - I have learned more about ruler work from you than anyone else. I too have a Janome (MC 6300) low shank machine, so I knew to get the 3mm rulers. I do have both the westalee ruler foot AND the Janome convertible ruler foot you recommend. Even adjusting my presser foot pressure, I have problems gliding the machine over many seam intersections on pieced quilts, so my work looks irregular and jerky. Most tutorials use whole cloth instead of pieced blocks. Do you ever have this problem on pieced blocks? I used Warm &Natural batting, so it is not high loft. Your thoughts?

    • @AmyQuilts
      @AmyQuilts  5 років тому +2

      It's definitely an issue and one that the Janome ruler feet handle best. Of course there's all sorts of tips and techniques to manage bulk of multiple seam intersections, sometimes you've got to cross a bulky seam. As you build up experience with the technique, you'll get better at it, but sometimes you've got to adjust the height when crossing a seam. Since the Janome convertible FMQ foot has some give to it, it doesn't bog down as much and if it does, it's easy to adjust. The ruler foot for the 15000, 9450, 9400 can be adjusted through the machine's height sensor or menu. For the Westalee and similar ruler feet, you might have to reach for the screwdriver, but there are a few tips to help...I'll get a blog posy up on this soon.
      Amy Johnson

    • @debraewing2859
      @debraewing2859 5 років тому

      Thank you, Amy. I do find that the Janome convertible FMQ foot works best, as it has some flex to it with the adjustible spring, but even with the presser foot pressure and the foot adjusted fairly high (so the spring still has some flex for going over seam intersections), it doesn't seem to be high enough for some intersections. (This particular quilt has a lot of small piecing.) AND visibility with the ruler foot attached is very limited due to the low harp and low shank. But YOU use basically the same machine and do beautiful work, so it may also be a case of just continuing to practice, practice, practice - with improved techniques I learn from you and others. Thanks again. I'll be watching your blog for when you have time to address this, as you mentioned.

      @AmyQuilts  9 років тому +1

      Barbara Joy Unless the foot is about 1/4 inch thick (high), don't use it as a ruler foot. The risk that you will run a ruler over the foot is too great. When you are quilting with rulers, you are applying a bit of pressure with the ruler against the foot and it could slip right over (or under) the foot. The needle will break and it could throw your machine out of timing.

      Chris Di Tomasso Yes, she is really using free motion quilting. Her hands are pushing the material in all directions. If her feed dogs were up and working, her quilt would only move from front to back. Her stitches are so good because she’s really talented and experienced. I read somewhere that to get good stitches in free motion quilting the needle should be moving up and down faster than the speed with which the sewer is moving the quilt. Hope this helps.

    Hi Amy, just recently purchased a Westalee ruler foot set that includes a 12" arc ruler. I too received a white strip with my set, but I thought the purpose of the strip was to adhere to the underside of the ruler to keep it in place on the fabric to prevent slippage. But by listening to you, it suppose to be used to adhere a handle in position on the ruler. Did I understand you correctly? If so, I didn't get a handle in my package. This is my first time experiencing with this type of foot and ruler, and I really don't know what to expect, or what to look for in a package, I guess.

    • @AmyQuilts
      @AmyQuilts  4 роки тому

      Janice Selden that's stable tape and does go on the underside. I recommend cutting it in two and going crosswise with it versus a single strip down the middle. Westalee no longer includes the handle with the ruler foot set.

      Westalee stopped including the spacer after a time. Just loosen the screw and let it drop down on the quilt just lightly. Then tighten the screw. Move your quilt a bit and if you can feel the foot causing drag, raise it just a tiny bit. The foot should just touch the quilt.

Was supposed to have been delivered today but the mail office have slapped £17 tax on :( There doesn't seem to be anywhere here in the UK that stocks these templates either. Found one company but the ruler foot sits in a curved channel inside the actual template and not that good. This is pants! Daren't purchase to thicker rulers as watching one of your other videos you show that they are no good for short shank machines.

    • @AmyQuilts
      @AmyQuilts  8 років тому

      It is difficult to fit a 1/4 inch thick ruler behind the foot on a low shank machine. That's why one particular company came out with a thinner set of rulers for use with ruler feet and also says you can't use a thicker ruler with these machines. However, most people don't regularly use basic rulers behind the foot because it's awkward and hard to see. You can certainly use thicker rulers as long as they fit without wedging under the presser foot bar. They're also easier to hold in place and feel better in the hand. If you are using a specialty ruler that needs to be used all the way around the foot, then thinner is the way to go. You can read more about ruler thickness on my blog at www.freemotionquiltingadventures.com plus see other tips on ruler work and videos. (BTW, the Quilted Pineapple rulers are slightly thinner than a full 1/4 inch which is helpful!)

    • @AmyQuilts
      @AmyQuilts  8 років тому

      You're quite welcome. Be very careful using thin rulers and other materials, you can damage your machine if they slip under or over the foot, besides breaking a needle.

      You just need a straight ruler and a curve or two to get started. See my site www.amysquiltingadventures.com to see my favorites. You'll likely want to choose 3mm thick rulers.
