IMO Luongo should of won it in 2007. Bordeur was the winner, but he was playing on a much better team and only had slightly better stats than Luongo. The 2007 Canucks was literally carried by Luongo.

I watched the vast majority of Luongo's games in Vancouver, and while he had bad nights as all goalies do, he's the ONLY reason the Canucks were competitive and in 2011, the meltdown was not his fault. He was the only guy who showed up in a blue jersey to play that night and it showed. He basically had to give up fewer than 2 goals (1 on most nights) or the team didn't have a chance. Sure, he was paid a lot, but he was never the problem on the ice. Sure, maybe he should have been smarter about resting himself and nursing injuries, but he wanted so desperately for Vancouver to have a Cup that he played through everything. He was a warrior. Kesler had his one "beast mode" playoff series, but Luongo was ALWAYS in beast mode.

  • @undiscloseddesires6816

Yeah, he put more pressure on himself than even the Vancouver fanbase did, which is saying a lot. They shouldn't have made him captain as that exacerbated things, they should've used Schneider more to help him reset his mental like THG said

Also about Lu: there was the irony of him being sensitive enough that for years he was seen as overly intense, mercurial, and humourless. When the writing was on the wall that his time in Vancouver was coming to a close...Hence came the Twitter, his relaxed nature, and his fun and funny personality came out.

If Florida wasn’t such a disaster then luongos career would have looked very different and he definitely could have challenged brodeurs records.

That's the same reason Glen Sather left in Grant Fuhr in 1989. Up 3-1, against Wayne Gretzky, and, the Kings, he proceeded to leave him in despite losing the last three games by a combined score of 22-5. His loyalty to his goaltender was greater than his loyalty to his other players. Bill Ranford SHOULD have been put in at some point because that's why he was there. In 1990, he won the Cup, and, the Conn Smythe Trophy. This was the series where Grant Fuhr finally got exposed for the fraud that he was. He watched the next season largely from the sidelines due to injury, bounced around the league, and, developed a cocaine habit. His jewelry collection put him in the Hall of Fame. Glen Sather promoted himself to GM after the incident, although, he probably should have been fired as this was his fault.

I would argue that Luongo rivals Hasek (with an honorable mention to Ryan Miller) for greatest goaltending talent to grace the NHL.
Why? Well consider the 2 consensus GOATs, Roy and Brodeur. These guys are both obviously amazing, but when you look at the teams in front of them, it is night and day to the teams Luongo, Miller and Hasek had in front of them.
Hockey's a team sport, and while great goaltenders absolutely steal games, how a goaltender is remembered is largely in part to the team in front of them.
Imagine Luongo with the 90's devils in front of him like Brodeur had, or the same era Avalanche or 80's/90's Habs Roy had. It would be insane.

I have a hard time being a Vancouver fan after the organization and so many of the fans tried to run him out of town. Its really a shame how people treated him. They blamed losing the Final to Boston on him when he set record for having 2 shutouts in 1-0 games. The offense did nothing to help him and defense at times did nothing either yet it all fell on him. There was a few lopsided games where his team had no business being on the ice. Raffi Torres had the same amount of goals as each Sedin in the Final. Luongo is Hall of Fame for twitter too. I hope he enjoys the retirement.

I recently went onto my NHL 12 GM mode as the Islanders GM and traded for Roberto Luongo. Being that Rick DiPietro was the only good goalie in the Roster, it was a move that was worth it in my opinion. Now that I have Luongo in net and Rock DiPietro as the backup, the Goaltending has improved much better. But I also did it in light of his retirement.

You know Shannon imma be honest I used to not get you love for Roberto lauongo. I always thought he was a good goaltender but not hall of famer. But after watching this I have to agree. He had quite a good resume. The only thing I don’t think is I think he’ll be a second bailed hall of famer. I do think he will definitely get in though

My saying in the 2011 Canucks playoff run was, win as a team..... loose as a team. When the Canucks lost Game 7 against the Bruins, a relative and fair weather Canuck fans posted on her FB. Win as a team, loose as a team . F that, Luongo lost the Cup. I was dealing with having watched my Canucks lose in the Finals, for the 3rd time on their history. Yes, everyone can voice this opinion on social media. but if you don't understand the game....

No question that Luongo is a Hall-of-Famer. I just wouldn't put him in the first year of eligibility because he never won a Stanley Cup and he never won the Vezina. His career stats are definitely HOF level but the goal of every star player is to win championships. Being great in the regular season is fine but a goalie who can step up in the playoffs, maybe steal a few playoff wins over four rounds is what IMO makes an undisputed 1st ballot HOF'er.

9:15 The alternate captains could also be the ones speaking to the refs. The Canucks had 3 alternate captains when Luongo was captain: Ohlund, Kesler, and Mitchell
12:35 I laughed at the girlfriend analogy haha
14:35 Luongo had a shutout the previous game, so the Canucks probably wanted to continue playing Luongo to maintain the momentum

With all the respect in the world for Lu, it is his pocketbook and not his body that drove him to retire. Even at his age he isn't going to play for 1.6 million. I think he should have. He could have gotten 11 more wins as a tandem with Bob and there would have been less of a recapture fine with only 2 years left on the contract. Cheers.

That finale playoff serie vs Boston...i've seen it at the time, and i kinda disagree with ya...It's not playing Schneider on the road who was a problem...it was the devastated defensive even more devastated by that stupid move by Nathan Horton on Aaron Rome...When you play with a top 2 of and injured Kevin Bieksa and an non developped Tanev...yeah, the injuries and back calls from the officials killed the last potential cup for Luongo ! Also, 2 girls no cup...the Sedin did nothing in that final, ghost...I still feel the Bruins didn't deserved that cup at all...
