The Oilers got him in the end of his career, but he had a big impact on Hemsky, Horcoff, and Stoll which helped them get to the finals in 05-06. He was a leader in the locker room in 03-04. It was sad as an Oilers fan to see him not to his old self, but he taught the Oilers how to win draws and pass the puck.
@@jonah.donohue Nah dude, 100% would've. He's only 6 goals short from equaling it. And with Oates, he just had to sit and wait until the pass came and score.
Oates might have been done by the time he came to Edmonton, but his presence and effect on Jared Stoll, Shawn Horcoff, Ales Hemsky etc played a major role on that team making it to the finals in 06
Love these and all other content! Shannon Please please could U do a video of Saku Koivu's career. Im sure that Your fans on Finland would love that. He is a so respected figure and Captain here:)
Washington really blew Oates, I remember how they rarely played him with Bondra, and would play Oates with Chris Simon and Konowalchuk/Nikolishin instead. Bondra who could score at will almost, would generally get centered by Michal Pivonka who was well past it at that point.
I remember hearing that Oates was a remarkable lacrosse player in his youth. It might even be said that lacrosse was his true passion. So maybe that is why Oates' game was so unusual looking. He was always using lacrosse passing strategies while everyone else primarily used traditional hockey passing strategies. Oates and Neely, like Oates and Hull was some of the most beautiful hockey I've ever seen.
Unfortunately, it had to happen. Oates said he would sit out and not honor his contract. The blues had to get something for him. Oates (not the blues) broke up Hull and Oates.
What if adam stayed in Detroit ... 89 draft sets the whole future for the run i mean nick and vladi oh and fedorov can you imagine Oates and fedorov and stevie y on a power play with nick and vladi on the point that would have been special almost has nice has the Russian 5
I didnt realize that oates only played 61 games in the year that Hull scored 86 goals. Hull did a lot of that 86 goals on his own. Hull deserves a lot more credit than people give him.
I can't explain how excited I was when the flyers traded for him. I was like 8 and didn't know much about hockey but I knew he was great. Unfortunately it didn't work out for us
I played lacrosse in a mens league where the guy that ran it was having a good laugh at Oates as an NHL coach. Oates was complaining about players "running up the score". This guy was on the floor for a junior A lacrosse game when Oates scored 9 goals and had 11 assists....
I think everyone in st louis agreed Oates deserved more money, the fans just didnt like the way he tried to get it. Holding the team hostage and threatening to sit out and not play (the equivalent of holding your breath till you get what you want). And by going public with it, he basically put management in the position where they had to trade him. Imagine if they had met his demands? Then every player who does better than expected would hold the team hostage for more money. and thats how Oates greed broke up the best goal scoring tandem the world will ever see.
Every time I see Adam Oates name I puke in my mouth a little bit. This guy should have been a Wing for life, should have 3 rings, and his number in the rafters. Trading Adam Oates was literally one of the worst trades of all time. To top it off by defeating Washington in the finals the Wings crushed his soul a second time. 99% of the time I am proud to be a Wings fan but Adam Oates will forever haunt me.
The Oates/Neely accomplishment of 50 goals in 49 games was even better than that... Neely actually reached 50 in the 43rd or 45th game that year with no goals scored during the last few games.
Adam Oates is one of the most underrated and forgotten playmakers of NHL and hockey history! But my question is that did he benefit more from playing with Hull and Neely than Hull and Neely benefitted from playing with him?
92-93 Oates played a lot with juneau and leach and he helped Juneau break a rookie record for assists, can't believe Bruins management traded Juneau after his rookie season, that the reason why Oates scored 45 goals.
Oates played with 3" cut off stick curve, you didn't mention that. Think of cup team couldve had if won the Stevens debacle, Oates,Shanny,Hull, Cujo, Stevens,McInnis
Hey i was wondering if you could do a Russian 5 vid or what i might consider the best draft in the NHL in my lifetime im 41 ( home town bias ) 89 wings and i believe they ended producing over 5000 (?) games played in the NHL .... unless you already have done them ill go check 👍and thanks
Oh wow I was ahead of my time as a youth hockey player back in the 70s..always wanted to lead my team in assist never cared much about goals.... nobody payed much attention.😂
I remember wishing the Blues would pay him. Could have been our 1st cup then. But, having suffered thru the Harry Ornest years, it was hard to fault Blues management.
No he was never the face of the capitals especially in the 90's it was Bondra and Hunter. Additionally there was a reason why Oates wasn't resigned by the caps, he wasn't happy at the end of the 00-01 season asked for a trade but instead of a trade the caps ripped the C off his chest and gave it to Brandon Witt and Steve Konowalchuk for the 01-02 season. So management fall out... Which Ironically happened again with the caps after he missed the playoffs in 2014 we bounced his butt out of town.
You bring up Craig Janney - he's an interesting case. Put up big numbers, but was universally hated by pretty much everyone in the league, especially his own teammates on whichever team he happened to be playing on at any given moment.
@@SverigeiSverige Yeah - There were also some ugly rumors of infidelity with other players' wives, but I'm not sure if those were ever proven? I'm treading carefully here...

I admire Adam Oates no-filter approach in calling out management and other players not pulling their own or delivering on what they were hire to do for the team.
Adam Oates and Washington Capitals fans definitely have a toxic relationship. I respect the guy as a player, but he was a pain in the ass more often than not and was a bad coach. Still enjoyed watching him as a player.
I liked Adam Oates, but is he HOF worthy? No Cups, major awards, 50 goal seasons, or Big time gamer moments. His only claim to fame is getting 2 HOF's to get 50 in 50, and 2 90 plus assist seasons. Great playmaker, but who did he ever beat?
I remember how absolutely stoked I was when my ducks signed him. He was so key to that teams run. He had a stellar playoffs as well. What a player
Adam Oates was awesome in NHL '94.
Growing up in Detroit, I was heart broken when he was traded, too.
no room for him as #1 center and we got a pretty good 2nd line center in Fedorov 2 years later, so it worked out.

Man if Oates didn't miss those 20 games in 90-91 then Hull would have taken Gretzky's single season goal scoring record, and shattered it.
