I chose this song for my sons funeral, mainly because I sing a lot and I wish he couldv'e sang with me like my other kids. When he died, I felt like the person portrayed in this song! I miss you Roland. I wish you were here, to sing this song! I love you. You won't be forgotten! Love Dad!
Loved the way the movie didn't show the story of the kid, we only see the father who lost his son. it doesn't matter if his son is good or bad or has a reason or not, the only thing matter it was his son.
It's funny that you identify that because the primary criticism by the"experts" was that , hiding the facts surrounding the incident was "manipulative" and illicited undeserved sympathy that would not exist we're the script absent of the deception which sounds like something a child might say after being pranked or tricked , The story was not about the child but a parent who lost a child HOW your kid dies doesn't matter in any way and the omission was not some trick to shock but a very intentional effort to make people recognize that every one is someone's family and regardless of the circumstances someone is suffering thier loss , we should remember that before saying someone deserved what they got. Or that we are glad they are gone .
I think this scene can be interpreted as the Father saying to his son that he loves him, and that maybe the son didn't know that he was loved, maybe the father didn't say it, or show his son enough love when he was alive, perhaps because of embarrassment or perceived weakness, but here the father (by singing the song) is saying not only to his son that he loves him but he's also saying it in front of the whole world, not to be seen as heroic or anything like that, or as an attempt to gain sympathy in any way, but because he's doing his job, or duty, as it where, as a father, regardless of what his son has done, without fear and without embarrassment, I think this scene shows what being a father is all about (maybe the father is filled with regret at the end thinking why didn't he say this, or show his son more love like this earlier on, who knows), maybe there are times in our lives where we don't get another opportunity to tell the people we love that we love them, and then maybe it becomes too late, maybe this scene is all about the father, in some way, trying to put a wrong right, and thus, acknowledging that maybe he was at fault in some way aswell, don't know. I love how during this scene there is a shot of the band without being able to hear them, I thought that was a masterstroke, I don't know how anyone can watch this and not be moved in some way. The only way for the characters in the movie to try and move forward is to show love and forgiveness, as it says in the song 'maybe love is the only answer,' yes, it is.

The song has a totally another meaning after you found what his son did. The first part is what his troubled son wrote and the second is all his father wish he could have told him. Break my heart every time.
As I listen to the song for the 1000th time, I realize how the whole song, from beginning to end, is a talk between father and son, alternating who's talking at every strophe. Maybe a regret of a talk that should've happened before... Son: Stuck in your confines chewin? it over. Caught in your headlights. Stop staring. Don?t know what?s on my mind. What am I thinking? Whatever I say is a lie, so stop staring. Tread carefully Father: Take a breath and count the stars. Let the world go round without you. If you?re somewhere you can hear this song Sing along. Close your eyes and count to ten. Maybe love?s the only answer. I will find a way to sing your song So sing along. And so on...

+André Wicher Well, it actually is! When Sam founds this songs he realizes it's unfinished. It's the one that Josh is playing in his room in the beggining of the movie. Sam instantly grabs a pencil and starts writing in his son's notebook.
I won't say Rudderless is a perfect film, it has some issues. BUT DAMN! This scene is powerful! The perfect way to end the movie. Overall it was a good movie, despite a few flaws, and totally worth watching.
Very under rated movie with great performances, great songs, and a twist you really won't see coming. Makes you think and really gets under your skin. Cruddup is amazing.
i made the mistake of saying i liked this movie, in public, i was told i was being insensitive to the people killed in school attacks and that I was empathizing with the killer and the movie empathizes with a killer, btw its been three years since your comment, has the feeling changed for you considering all the shootings ?? ( not trying to be insensitive or anything, just genuinely asking ) :)
@@himanshusinha8245 I love this movie ,,, my cousin was killed in Frontier middle school by Barry loukaitis in 1996 one of the first school shootings. 3 people died . he was sentenced to 189 years.
This scene (in combination with the rest of the movie) is amazing. The dad wasn't able to grieve his son because of the shame of his actions. People looked at the son and all he was to them was a cold-blooded murderer, but behind all that... he is still someone, with a father, and mother. He is a son. I got overwhelmed by feelings looking at this movie.
My dad loved this movie, especially this song. I feel like he thought he resignated with it. He died two weeks ago of overdose and I feel like my dad identified with the kid in a way. He replayed this movie over and over again. So I cannot help but responsible to “sing his song”

I don’t even care that it’s not dudes voice. The commitment I saw from him in this role is something many more people should witness. This film is important
I don't usually post on UA-cam but this movie is by far one of the best I've ever seen, absolute masterpiece, it's a shame it never got the push it deserves...RIP Anton Yelchin
Moving into my first apartment alone and nervous and on a tiny TV and a barely functional dvd player I let this masterpiece take me away from it all,so much emotion held in such little time I couldn't help but cry as I watched the father weep and sigh
Incredibly emotional and beautiful. Very few people know this, but this song has a special meaning to me. Why? Because 40 years ago, my then girlfriend's doctor informed us that our baby within her (at 22 weeks) had a blood disease that was difficult to survive (5% chance) and if carried could put my girlfriend's life at risk as well. We were 19-20 years old. She was too devastated to decide, so, she left the decision to me. Let fate roll the dice and likely lose the baby and possibly her as well or abort the baby and save her life for sure. It broke me, but I chose the latter. As I cried in the hallway outside the room where the procedure took place, a nurse came from the room and was carrying a bed pan. She said, "Would you like to see your son?" It haunts me still. The final words to this song are, "What is gone is not forgotten. I wish you were here to sing along, my son. My son. My son. My son." It hurts so bad... every time. Yet, I always come back for more. It's as if revisiting my pain keeps his memory alive, if only for a few moments.
Just found out my dad died yesterday... I think I will play this song at his funeral and exchange "My son" to "My dad" at the end... Unless I come up with a song of my own for his eulogy. Have been rewatching this movie since the start of 2016 multiple times, even performed Over Your Shoulder and Real Friends live on my first live solo performance a week ago. As Marty McFly from Back to the Future would say - this is heavy, Doc...
Went through a rough patch in my life after a few friends passed away, I was drinking a lot and thinking about some pretty permanent choices I couldn’t come back from. This movie helped me through that. The soundtrack and this song in particular will forever be something I associate with personal grief and the ability for the human spirit to overcome things that push us to the brink. I’m not through it yet, maybe I won’t ever be. But I’m better than I was and this movie had a little part to play in that healing. So thank you.
I was in prison for a couple of years and this movie was in the faith based dorm. Honestly this movie moved me so much. I learned it on guitar and played it a few times for the other inmates. I got out and showed my dad. He loved it
Rip Anton. Billy your performance was unbelievable. This last song had me in tears. I have 2 teenage boys that I try to communicate with the absolute best I can. Making sure they know how much I love them and how I hope the can talk to me about anything. William H Macy what a phenomenal first directorial debut. Mega fan forever
I'm a HUGE MOVIE FAN, and I didn't think ANYTHING could surprise me... But I was KNOCKED BACK & KNOCKED OUT by the "reveal" in this film. BRAVO, Mr. Macy, and everyone else in this drama!!!! And, of course, RIP Anton.
+Ronald Gabriel There was a reason, parents separated and kid was a loner. I don't think he felt loved and was estranged by his classmates by being different. The student that busted into his dorm room while recording his last song pushed him over the edge. He had a choice, revenge or lunch with dad. Parents of the shooter or victim's parents have to suffer forever. So Sad. And yes, the music is incredible.
I don't think anyone played a role of a grieving father as well as Sam !! Brilliant. You can feel the heaviness of his heart in this song :(. Just an amazing movie and an amazing soundtrack :)
Just saw this movie a few days ago, but this song keeps growing inside me. Really strong and emotional. Terrific movie, becomes easy to get under the skin of the carachters and suffer with them. Thank you :)
after reading all these comments and never hearing about this movie, I found it and watched it and all I can say is ...POWERFUL, MOVING, TEARFUL, AMAZING, AN EPIC and the MUSIC BAM BAM BAM..love it, a must for anyone to see.
Excellent movie and incredible song. Always makes me cry. I can feel his pain as he is singing. I have never understood why people hold the family responsible for something they themselves had no idea was going to happen. If the families knew I am sure they would get their loved ones help. I always want to send a sympathy card to the family of the shooter because they are grieving too but never get the chance to. I am happy to see a film that looks at the other side of this issue.
I have listened to this song over 100 times in the last week and its still as emotional as it was the first time I heard it...I find myself counting the stars on days and nights that are trying. Beautiful lyrics and melody.
I was downloading another movie on a shit internet while I was watching TV, then this movie started. I forgot about the other movie that I was downloading and just kept watching this one, it is INCREDIBLE, one of the best movies that I have ever watched, I got sad when it ended, but I just can't stop listening to this song
Why than you should have? It IS sad. For that mans hurt for his son, and the son who was lost and made an awful decision. Even though it is movie, it's sad
What a powerful song. When giving his advice he asks his son to sing along, admitting fault. He also says that we can make the best of everything; nothing is what is was turning the light on; honesty changes all; meaning that his son's actions change things but he wishes he could admit fault and retribute his actions by singing along. When no one claps at the end, his shrug suggests that he understands where the audience is coming from too, but that he still wishes his son were alive and able to at least attempt to reconcile.
Was going to goto bed when this came on my televison. Next thing I know is hearing Sing Along. This movie is beautiful and captivating in every single way. 10/10
This was definitely one of the best movies I've seen in a while. It's up there with Almost Famous and both feature Billy Crudup as a conflicted musician.
This movie is heart-wrenching, humorous, honest, and enlightening all at the same time. I was crying by the end of this song. I love how Sam just sang and never had to explain or apologize for what happened. The song spoke for itself. I could watch the entire movie 10 times and still come out learning a few lessons after.
One of the most best movie. Sedih, dalem..emosinya kuat. Lagu ini aja bener bener menggambarkan gimana perasaan bapak ma anak ga peduli keadaannya anak tetep anak yang kita cintai. Dah brapa kali nonton pun tetep Nyesek sih
I recommend this film to anyone who will listen. It's warm, funny and heavy all at the same time which is testament to Bill Macy and the cast. I couldn't take my eyes off it.
What really made me burst into tears is that all of this movie is actually based on a true story so everything just hits you twice as hard when you figure out the true meaning of the movie
There's a brief moment in this song where the tempo slows down at perfect moment, its hardly even noticeable... and I didn't catch it the first time I listened to it - but right after the lyrics go "honesty changes us - completely - tread carefully", this slight hesitation before he sings "Take a breath and count the stars, let the world go round without you" really made me think about how important the words were. It was masterful! It was a great movie, though its a tough subject to deal with. You also did an excellent job with the video.
An amazing movie. It is so deep. In one hand, you want to forgive that gifted musician who committed that terrible crime after feeling the torments that his father is going through, on the other hand, when you feel for the family of those who got killed you cannot forgive the killer as for no reason he killed those six innocent persons. I love these type of movies which shakes you, makes you appreciate how lucky you are.
I saw this movie and the songs are great. i love movies with music in them. the story in this movie had me amazed at the end i did not expect the ending at all. one of the best movies with songs i have seen ever. the last song wraps up the whole story with a much suprise ending that wowed me. i have written the words down and plan to learn that last song no matter how long it takes. what an amazing film a good story thru and thru. not one complaint. just have to watch the whole thing or you would be lost lol and miss the best part. Take a breath and count to ten. best music movie ive seen in a while friends...

As I listen to the song for the 1000th time, I realize how the whole song, from beginning to end, is a talk between father and son, alternating who's talking at every strophe. Maybe a regret of a talk that should've happened before...
Son:
Stuck in your confines chewin? it over.
Caught in your headlights. Stop staring.
Don?t know what?s on my mind. What am I thinking?
Whatever I say is a lie, so stop staring. Tread carefully
Father:
Take a breath and count the stars.
Let the world go round without you.
If you?re somewhere you can hear this song
Sing along.
Close your eyes and count to ten.
Maybe love?s the only answer.
I will find a way to sing your song
So sing along.
And so on...
+André Wicher Well, it actually is! When Sam founds this songs he realizes it's unfinished. It's the one that Josh is playing in his room in the beggining of the movie. Sam instantly grabs a pencil and starts writing in his son's notebook.
The way Billy Crudup says “my son” at the end breaks my heart. It’s such a beautiful song!!
bloody hell. whos cutting onions in the room?
I don't know but whoever it is, they better stop
I won't say Rudderless is a perfect film, it has some issues. BUT DAMN! This scene is powerful! The perfect way to end the movie. Overall it was a good movie, despite a few flaws, and totally worth watching.
Very under rated movie with great performances, great songs, and a twist you really won't see coming. Makes you think and really gets under your skin. Cruddup is amazing.
Ur right it was such a great movie kinda confusing in the beginning with his son but it revealed its self and just beautiful songs well written
There is a unique mental problem in the movie via good written song's lyrics that was a Stockholm syndrome..
Hands down one of the best movies I've ever watched. And that's truly a mean twist in it.
This song broke my heart
One of the movies that will never ever leave you the same
One of my favorite movies of 2014...Give it a year or two everyone will end up loving this, it's magical!
I shall share this movie~
+Ryan Spann Magical is right!
i made the mistake of saying i liked this movie, in public, i was told i was being insensitive to the people killed in school attacks and that I was empathizing with the killer and the movie empathizes with a killer, btw its been three years since your comment, has the feeling changed for you considering all the shootings ??
One of the most underrated movie...
.I loved it
My dad loved this movie, especially this song. I feel like he thought he resignated with it. He died two weeks ago of overdose and I feel like my dad identified with the kid in a way. He replayed this movie over and over again. So I cannot help but responsible to “sing his song”
Stuck in your confines chewin? it over.

Don't know what?s on my mind. What am I thinking?
Whatever I say is a lie, so stop staring. Tread carefully

If you're somewhere you can hear this song
Sing along.

Maybe loves the only answer.
I will find a way to sing your song
So sing along.
Help me understand the silence.
We make the best we can of everything.
Nothing is what it was. Turning the light on.
Honesty changes us completely. Tread carefully.
Take a breath and count the stars.
Let the world go round without you.
If you're somewhere you can hear my song
Sing along.
Close your eyes and count to ten.
Maybe love?s the only answer.
I will find a way to sing your song.
Just sing along.
What is lost can be replaced.
What is gone is not forgotten.
I wish you were here to sing along
My son
My son
My son :3
Verse, chorus, verse, chorus.
Written by son, father, son, father.
Beautiful.
Thom Yorke + Kurt Cobain = Billy Crudup.
I don’t even care that it’s not dudes voice. The commitment I saw from him in this role is something many more people should witness. This film is important
As a father that's never had children.....I cry every time I watch this movie and hear this song.
I don't usually post on UA-cam but this movie is by far one of the best I've ever seen, absolute masterpiece, it's a shame it never got the push it deserves...RIP Anton Yelchin
I'm so glad I've found this movie 'cause movies now a days SUCK.
Exactly
I'm so sorry for you.
I would like to know how it goes man. Sorry for your loss.
Please record it, i would like to hear a cover.
Sorry to hear about your loss, make life amazing for yourself.
Roberts Matisons oh my god. My deepest condolence, Robert. may his soul rest in peace
Roberts Matisons sorry for ur loss
Went through a rough patch in my life after a few friends passed away, I was drinking a lot and thinking about some pretty permanent choices I couldn’t come back from. This movie helped me through that. The soundtrack and this song in particular will forever be something I associate with personal grief and the ability for the human spirit to overcome things that push us to the brink. I’m not through it yet, maybe I won’t ever be. But I’m better than I was and this movie had a little part to play in that healing. So thank you.
You got this buddy, it gets so fucking hard sometimes. I believe in you man and you’ll do great.
Amen my guy ….
god bless you on your path my brother
such an underrated movie, another wonderful piece from William H. Macy
I was in prison for a couple of years and this movie was in the faith based dorm. Honestly this movie moved me so much. I learned it on guitar and played it a few times for the other inmates. I got out and showed my dad. He loved it
10 years already feels like just yesterday..times really flies😢
I just realized that all my favorite movies of 2014 were bittersweet and centered around music: Rudderless, Frank and Begin Again.
+PewPewGrrr Wasn't Frank great? :)
Yes! My favorite Fassbender performance.
I'm a HUGE MOVIE FAN, and I didn't think ANYTHING could surprise me... But I was KNOCKED BACK & KNOCKED OUT by the "reveal" in this film. BRAVO, Mr. Macy, and everyone else in this drama!!!! And, of course, RIP Anton.
the kid killed 6 people for no reason but now I'm feeling sorry for the kid. The power of music is incredible
+walburg11 That was almost the best reason that sums up what I thought and felt for the kid too. Divorces are never easy for any kids, really...
naufal azhar the divorce was due to and after the shooting. He went on the spree due to being outcast by his peers.
+Kent Watson then why did the parents live in different places?
MoshingMosher2 sepearated
a father's love for his son..despite the evil brought about by his son, he found the good in his son's songs
this song is so Lennon-esque
'What is lost can be replaced.
What is gone is not forgotten.'
Wow this words touch my heart... Awesome movie
I still think he says "...CAN'T be replaced..."makes more sense, and goes with the next line..
+John Jenkins Thanks bro :)
I don't think anyone played a role of a grieving father as well as Sam !! Brilliant. You can feel the heaviness of his heart in this song :(. Just an amazing movie and an amazing soundtrack :)
this song is so Lennon-esque... The build-up at the end gives chills..great performance by Billy Crudup
I am totally not crying. Like at all..
Its ok.. You will some day.
best soundtrack for any movie, handsdown. also best movie handsdown
Into The Wild's soundtrack is breathtaking as well.
thanks, I'll check it out
Found this movie in early recovery, and this song helped me through some rough days. ❤
best movie i've seen in a long time
Relatively unknown film, yet one of the best I have watched in years.
I cry so much everytime I heard this music.
Just finished watching this film! Absolutely beautiful in a sort of melancholy way, but beautiful none the less. :)
the camera shot on anton exatly with the line "what is lost can't be replaced" hits hard every fucking time since 2016
This one of the best movies I have ever seen.
This is something to think about with your son when he needs you!!! This is such a good movie, "Rudderless"
The number of goosebumps I got during the length of this video are uncountable. I'm feverish.
Just saw this movie a few days ago, but this song keeps growing inside me. Really strong and emotional. Terrific movie, becomes easy to get under the skin of the carachters and suffer with them.
Thank you :)
Эта песня,мелодия,одна из лучших в этом стиле!Заставляет проникнуться событием и заглянуть в себя!
after reading all these comments and never hearing about this movie, I found it and watched it and all I can say is ...POWERFUL, MOVING, TEARFUL, AMAZING, AN EPIC and the MUSIC BAM BAM BAM..love it, a must for anyone to see.
This movie really got to me as both a musician and a human being. I loved it so much. Billy was amazing.
The movie is good, really good... BUT the ending, this particular song, and how the story wraps up is simply BRILLIANT, masterpiece-type.
Another underrated film...definitely deserved more recognition.
Rip Anton Yelchin.... i miss u so much
I have listened to this song over 100 times in the last week and its still as emotional as it was the first time I heard it...I find myself counting the stars on days and nights that are trying.
This song will be a part of music history.
I cried so hard at this part. More than I probably should have.
Why than you should have? It IS sad. For that mans hurt for his son, and the son who was lost and made an awful decision. Even though it is movie, it's sad
this song makes me so emotional. Beautiful song and movie, i cried a lot, especially at the end.
Me too 😢
what a movie. very underrated.
Right that what i think for years
What a powerful song.
Yeah but this one he really plays and sings unlike almost famous.
One of the best movie , beauiful songs, great performance
" I wish you were here to sing along"
From 3 long hours i am trying to remember this song. Finally i found it. The best song ever (lyrics)❤
Very touching. Sad. Didn't know what was happening really until I saw the tombstone. The ending here got me choked up.
i almost cry viewing this movie
Me too
I'm a mother to a wonderful sweet 15 month old boy and this breaks my heart so bad.. my son, my son, my son, my son...
This movie is heart-wrenching, humorous, honest, and enlightening all at the same time. I was crying by the end of this song. I love how Sam just sang and never had to explain or apologize for what happened. The song spoke for itself.
I could watch the entire movie 10 times and still come out learning a few lessons after.
cant stop to hear the full album...this song is amazing
One of the most best movie. Sedih, dalem..emosinya kuat. Lagu ini aja bener bener menggambarkan gimana perasaan bapak ma anak ga peduli keadaannya anak tetep anak yang kita cintai. Dah brapa kali nonton pun tetep Nyesek sih
This song should have gotten an Oscar nomination.
There's a brief moment in this song where the tempo slows down at perfect moment, its hardly even noticeable... and I didn't catch it the first time I listened to it - but right after the lyrics go "honesty changes us - completely -
tread carefully", this slight hesitation before he sings "Take a breath and count the stars, let the world go round without you" really made me think about how important the words were.
Why is this dude an actor? Billy crudup wrote and performed this song and 'Home' What an artist! Just as good as Radiohead! Give this guy a mic and guitar, he'll entertain us all just as good as his brilliant acting!! RESPECT!!
One of my favorite movie of all time.. Got the whole soundtrack saved on my playlist, whenever I play it, I get a sudden sadness that just came out like Sam's Spiral~like emotion.
This song is so beautiful.
Such a great end to the film. Music is the best cohesive device in a movie and this was transfixing. Nice lyrics whomever wrote the song!
This movie and Reign over me always make me cry.
I quit watching movies and T.V. around 2000. I saw the movie last night.. So Good . Search for truth .... Man if y'all only knew and believed what I've come to realize...but it's not in everyone's heart... I wish it were though. Think... don't follow... These next few years....Mercy and Grace Lord
one of my favorite movies...cool music and a great story and r.i.p. Anton
Great song, great movie!!
