I’ve never really believed the whole Giovanni Suicide Theory.
1) His appearance in B2W2 pretty much kills the theory.
2) Just because his Pokémon can’t learn Surf doesn’t mean he couldn’t have just swam out of the cave. There are people in the Pokémon World that can swim
3) If Giovanni can’t swim, since none of his Pokémon know Surf, this raises an even bigger question: How the heck did he even get in that room of the cave in the first place?
4) Some sounds have the misfortune of sounding similar when heard on certain hardware. How can we tell if the sound that played was a splash or just the radio?
5) I don’t think the developers would go as far as to hint at a character’s suicide in a Pokémon Game. Death, yes. Suicide, not so much.

Something I saw not too long ago takes the "Rocket are the good guys" theory a step further involving all of the other evil organizations, looking at their motto. Perhaps they wanted to stop Team...
Magma/Aqua from destroying the world: "To protect the world from devastation"
Flare from destroying those that aren't stylish: "To unite all peoples within our nation"
Plasma from forcing people to mercifully let go of their Pokemon: "To denounce the evils of truth and love"
Galactic from recreating the universe to their liking: "To extend our reach to the stars above"
...but this also has a few holes in it, like how this motto was never in the games and this isn't how the motto actually goes.
OR they just used the motto as inspiration to create new games...makes sense if you think about it really...

Giovanni has no SURFing Pokémon as far as I know...
Ivan Soto Although 3 of the 4 Pokémon he has are capable of using Surf, it's not in any of their move sets when you fight him. So unless he has a Surf HM, he had to swim on his own.

That's what I'm thinking. I find the Pokemon community is way too blood-thristy. Jumping at every single given oppertunity to find some deep subliminal message, implication of death or the persistance in making Red out as this "Worse than satan" sociopath. I like some of it like Blue's Raticate dying (Although to avoid hitler-Red theories, I doubt he did it on-purpose and might have happened due to other causes as well), but the Pokemon community needs to lighten up sometimes.

And then in Pokemon generations (episode 5 specifically), it was confirmed that Silver is Giovanni's child
Giovanni was one of my favorite villains in the games considering he ran his organization like a true crime syndicate and had a perfect coverup as the final Gym Leader. Overall there was always profit in his exploits and unlike his successors in later games which had their own borderline insane machinations, Giovanni was at least the most simple and effective.

Though I wish this level of detail was put into understanding with other leaders of later villain teams such as Team Magma and Team Aqua's Maxie and Archie, and their relationship since the two clearly knew each other and something had to have caused the two the differ on extreme views and created two organizations of eco terrorists to battle each other.
Also Cyrus is also definitely one character in need of further exposition since it was more obvious that something had to occur in his childhood for him to want to destroy reality and re-create one without spirit. They hinted the kind of child he was growing up in Sunyshore by the elders you visit there.

Yeah, I'm a little confused now. Because back when Gen 2 came out, I pieced together that Silver was Giovanni's son early on. I thought it was explicetly stated in the game??? I guess it wasn't (kinda)??? I just accepted it as fact as a kid and never questioned it to being wrong, I guess. And when SS and HG came out, I continued to not question it. Woops. How did I get that impression?

Gionvanni is awesome in my opinion...I looked up to him when I was younger, and he even had me considering changing MY OWN Pokemon lineup from Water/Ice/Dragon types to Ground types...that was nearly impossible.
Also one would think that the Pokemon League would be more aware of Giovanni's 'dubious' activities and willing to disqualify him from his status as the Viridian City Gym Leader...unless criminal-related activities aren't a factor in one being qualified as a Gym Leader sanctioned by the Pokemon League.
Pokemon LIVE, I seriously unironically love it. It had great musicals, and Giovanni's swag was too much. Especially since he was voiced in there by Maximillian Pegasus XD

On the ghost immune thing, that was a glitch. Ghost was supposed to hit Psychic for super effective from the start. Mind, the only move that would have applied to is Lick so it wasn't... exactly going to stop Psychics reguardless

When you all said that Giovanni dies in the end, I laughed a LOT. First off, he had a Nidoking, which CAN LEARN SURF. That splash could've just been him surfing away. Fainted Pokémon can use HMs.
The point wasn't that he doesn't have any Pokemon on his team that COULD learn surf, but that none of his Pokemon do know surf, as evidenced when you battle him.

You mean to say that Giovanni couldn't swim!? Maybe being able to swim isn't as common in Japan as it is in the Netherlands, but still, there are plenty of characters able to swim in the games, and even some of Giovanni's pokémon are able to learn surf, isn't surfing the only way to get to Tohjo Falls?

I would like to hope that an island nation of people would teach their members to swim. Then again, I have been surprised before.
kilderok It's said that on Hawaii, children learn to swim first, then to walk, but in te Chronicles of Narnia, it's stated multiple times that Lucy can't swim, even though she lives on an island (Britain). I think it partly depends on the size of the island you live on, and thus indirectly, on the likelyness of you ever needing to swim. The Netherlands are below sealevel, so because we are really Calvinistic thinkers (read "defeatists"), we all learn to swim at five to ten years old, so if the dams break (which is in fact very unlikely, but possible, look at the flood of 1953), we don't drown. This has also saved the Netherlands in for example the war against Spain, when we broke our own dams to create a waterline that was uncrossable for the Spaniards, who couldn't swim.

To be honest, I would like a Pokemon game where ALL teams, especially Team Rocket, Team Galactic, and Team Flare to return and you have to stop all of them. Imagine that! It would be a full action-packed Pokemon game! Also I would assume that it would add more story to what happened to all of them: Giovanni, who... this happened, Cyrus, who just walked off into the Reverse world in Platinum, never to be seen again, and Lysander, who just when into full rage mode and blew up. Wow, I can't believe it's been 2 years since this episode came out, I remember getting an alert and watching it on day one
I really hope than when the series has its final episode, Ash and Giovanni will challenge each other to a Pokémon battle to end all battles.
Giovanni did NOT commit suicide. In the timeline, generation 4 began before generation 5, meaning the events of gen 4 occured first, then gen 5. So Giovanni's still alive.

I laugh at the he is Ash's father theory. There is a much more (I don't know if I should say it like that) interesting/crazy theory that he is Jessie's father (it is more an Anime theory). Why are many people actually believing this theory?
For starters, Jessie's mother Miyamoto was a top Team Rocket agent (I am not making this up, it's from the japanese CD drama) who actually was on really good terms with Giovanni's mother "Madame Boss". Going with the timeline presented on the CD Drama, Giovanni is around 20 during that time (thus around Miyamotos age). It is highly likely that Miyamoto also knew her bosses son. At least Giovanni knew her because he stated that the womans whereabouts are still unkown to this day after she went missing while hunting for Mew.
Why wouldn't Giovanni know that Jessie is his daughter? Miyamoto had to give Jessie away at a very young age to an orphanage due to her hunting for Mew and later, while encountering Mew, Miyamoto got lost because of an avalanche. It is unclear, if Jessie even knows her own mother (the woman presented in one of the earlier episodes is, at least in the japanese version, not Miyamoto) let alone her real father.
It just a crazy fan theory but really enjoy it. For me it would make more sense than the Ash theory.

Actually, Giovanni could have used the HM surf on nidoking (he can learn ir in gen 4) once he was outside of the cave where you battle him
If you beat him, all of his pokemon have fainted, ergo, his Nidoking couldn't use Surf.

I would also like to point out that just because the player has to surf somewhere doesn't mean he has too. Plenty of places we have to surf to that other people can swim.
