IMHO under 17.1 to 18 migration it is better to keep both of the 4.15 and 4.19 kernel in the boot menu and also give the access to both of the 4.15 & 4.19 during boot up, thanks for the vid, happy new year.
Yes, with one exception, and that's if MX moves to a different base IE. 18.3 was the last version based on Debian 9, and MX claims that because MX 19 is based on Debian 10, you have to perform a fresh install.
The error about Virtualbox guest additions you got when upgraded to the newer kernel refers to the guest additions not running as modules on the installed system (as if the installed system were a guest, however, since the installed system is not a guest in a VM, the error messages should not really affect anything).
Most people would not benefit from a newer kernel, and for some, the newer kernel might break an already working system. It is far better to make the kernel upgrade optional. For most people, if their hardware works with kernel 4.15, 4.19 is not necessary. The newer versions of Gimp, Firefox, LibreOffice, etc, is much more relevant to day to day operations than a newer kernel.

Does running the MX Updater have the same effect as running 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'?

@@narwhal4304 Thanks. I have used 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade' several times by now. I guess I'll stay on MX 18.3 for a little while longer.

Same happened to me. Interestingly, my launcher for GIMP in Cairo Dock (which i use along with a side panel in MX) didn't break with the update.
I am getting rid of this OS. Will not upgrade! Pretty poor!
