Joey Claire is SO good, you guys. Joey’s a stellar depiction of growing up in the 90’s, and she’s taken a very special and personal place in my heart. I really hope this video helps draw people in to her story.
This is a look at Joey’s arc in Act 1, using only one guess at her potential Hero Title: Maid of Light. Our lack of canon confirmation of Joey’s actual Aspect or Class combined with my personal thoughts on Roleplay mean that this is really just a guess at her title, even moreso than the Xefros or Dammek videos.
I can think of one other potential Classpect for Joey based on the evidence we’ve seen, but this one contextualizes her struggles in Act 1 best in my opinion, so I wanted to share it here. Whenever new information comes out, I’ll probably release a follow-up video, especially if it turns out this interpretation doesn’t tell the full story.
Todays’ question is: Did Joey’s story make you feel like you understand what it might’ve been like to grow up as a nerdy girl in the 90’s a little better? Did it mean something to you?

Has anyone mentioned how the symbol on her shirt looks like a compass, which could imply that her fate is to direct and lead people? That concept pairs well with the concept of her being a bright star in a dark sky, leading people by always being there for them.
Plus the compass is a tool commonly used by explorers, possibly referring to Pre-scratch Jake, her dad.
Consider: mindbound Claire. That would make the aspects of the main hiveswap characters (Rage, Blood, Doom, Mind) match the aspects "missing" from the main humans

Confession time: I actually discovered you (on Medium) when I was looking around for Joey Claire meta to help me roleplay her in an online forum. The text version of this video was the very first thing of yours I ever read and my first serious research on Classpect meta for a particular character. So, I just want to take the opportunity to say thank you for that. (I had a great time in the RP too, she got adopted by Chariot from Little Witch Academia). If I get a little emotional commenting on this video, that's why.

Your explanation of Light as an Aspect is something near and dear to me too, as my favorite Homestuck characters are Light-Aspected, and I myself pretty believably got a Prospit-Light result from the EZ quiz. You bring up Light as communication and interconnection as well as pure information, and I definitely like that take. I was wondering what you think about Light's connection to Prose and Exposition as story elements, as well. Rose and Mindfang are authors and Vriska (a Thief) is an avid consumer of the written word. All of the Light players love expositing and sharing information, to the point of compulsion in Aranea's case. Half of Hiveswap Act One is about Joey sharing information about herself and Earth with an alien, who also ends up expositing about Alternia for the benefit of Joey and the audience. Just curious what you think on that.

I'll probably touch on it when I talk about Rose, so yeah it's pretty inevitable! That said, I think it's pretty much just Rose flirting with the Void aspect because she's an unhealthy state of mind. We see similar things throughout Homestuck and also Hiveswap--see the videos on Dammek and Xefros for other examples of characters connecting to more than one Aspect at once.

Would you say grimm dark is something inherently related classpect? Someone I was debating with said it was strictly related to the horrorterrors
It's not really known one way or the other. Another big Classpect theorist thinks that Rose's grimdarkness was one particular expression of a phenomenon of "trying so hard not to be your Classpect you become the opposite" (Seer of Light -> Witch of Void), or "Inversion". OptimisticDuelist calls the same phenomenon Roleplaying, where you try to act out another Classpect and generally fail or hurt something because that's not where your strengths lie, and notes that it's not always a matter of being an "opposite" (Vriska tries so hard to be Mindfang she acts like a Sylph of Light - poorly).
Rose's case *in particular* was partly due to the outside influence of the Horrorterrors and Doc Scratch's manipulation. Rose, particularly in Acts 1-5, is an homage to the writings of H.P. Lovecraft and in particular the roleplaying game based on his works, called Call of Cthulhu. In that RPG, characters have the opportunity to obtain incredible insights into the universe and great magical power at the inevitable cost of their mental health. Rose going "Grimdark" was a matter of making one "Sanity Check" too many by trying to understand the motivations of eldritch beings from beyond mortal ken. It gave her great magical power, but also drove her insane (although, notably, not so insane she was violent toward her friends or unthinking in her actions - just non-communicative, self-destructive, etc.) It's the equivalent of getting a ton of "derangements" dumped on you at once in the Call of Cthulhu RPG. Even after dying and getting resurrected (twice), she even walks away with a long-term issue in the form of alcohol addiction to cope with the lasting effects of the experience.
tl;dr it was the Horrorterrors and Hussie taking inspiration from a roleplaying game, or at least that RPG's zeitgeist and hilarious player stories.
You are currently by far the best analysis channel l watch; you say way more about _Homestuck_ then l ever could and l love every bit of it. I definitely going to share this video around, as most of it is great even if you haven't played _Hiveswap_.

Might it be that she is being raised for the purpose of creating the second green sun, to give back to LE the powers of the first guardian and free him from the Felt Hole.
Or could it be that her purpose is far greater in scope?
Everything in paradox space will eventually bring about its own creation, but so far we haven't seen how paradox space creates itself, as a Maid of Light, she would be the most suitable candidate to bring about the existence of the very story she inhabits, to create the spotlight that falls upon her.
And maybe, just maybe, the process will be helped along by a Lord of both Space and Time...
There ain’t no Second Green Sun
yet, and this is mostly (all) speculation
I know Homestuck is all about time shenanigans, but Hiveswap occurs before the events of Homestuck on both worlds. Plus Doc Scratch did say that Lord English would eventually die, since he defines the alpha timeline by it being the only one to host his birth and death, and he is Lord English. And we know he can't mean the death of the Doc Scratch body because there are still split timelines after that happens.
Doc Scratch, as a person and conscious being, died when LE was born.
Much like Caliborn and Calliope, they are entirely separate people who share the same body.
And due to time shenanigans and functional omniscience the Doc has such an all encompassing influence that he is somehow present for likely every major event in paradox space, simply watching most of them.
I would personally love for Joey to be a mind player (not just because I'm a mind player and biased but) because after having zefros and dammek confirmed to be two of the aspects we didn't see in the 8 human kids and Jude seems to have incredibly strong doom vibes (one of the other aspects we haven't seen in the 8 humans) the only one left is mind. I believe its possible that she's just strongly roleplaying her mother. And to be so dedicated to staying in her mothers footsteps might just be showing how much grief she still harbors and maybe her character arc will be her subconscious realization of her true aspect
Very interesting! I always believed Joey to be a Life player, due to her desire and skills of being a vet and kind of healing Xefros by making him realize just how much of the horrible things he's accepted due to his society treating it as normal is not at all normal. Plus it could be possible that Joey is bisexual, since I do see her developing a crush on Xefros (otp ;u;). But hopefully Joey gets to be in the spotlight she dreams of, and can help her soon-to-be plethora of friends too.
Life is the other major Aspect she seems linked to, and I don't really disagree! I felt Light provided the best context to her arc in act 1, but there's a reason I put the question mark by her Classpect. I should be commenting on that uncertainty when we talk a bit more about A. Claire!

[Act 2 Spoilers]
Now that Act 2 is out, I'd like to mention *Claire* . Claire, as in, clear; clarity. Joey's the only one who starves for the truth in the trial. While everyone else has their own agenda in the case, she's willing to dig her heels in to find true justice despite the rest of the court just wants to get it over with it by the trial's second half.
For someone so ravenous for knowledge, she never thought that maybe Xefros has a well-founded fear for highbloods until it's too late, never picking up visual cues or bother asking about other trolls' nervousness whenever Marvus is around. Even by earth standards, Joey's rather naïve when it comes to street smarts- easily trusting strangers until she finds out she's being used. She needed someone to make her realize the full extent of Alternia's dystopic society. She needs to open her eyes.
The trial's a taste of the injustice of it all. Joey's not the only one passionate enough to try to mend all the backward laws troll civilization has to offer. That someone is Tyzias. The difference is that Joey craves for the truth almost recklessly. Tyzias does too, but is more pragmatic about it. She prioritizes not only to realize her vision of a better legal system, but also order. The troll lived jadedly not only watching potential innocents to be slaughtered for entertainment, but also partakes in it. Though callous as she is in letting the true criminal get away, she knows that putting an immediate stop to it is not the law's nor the participants' current objective and would be fruitless, like Joey's (tho positive) fussiness may bore everyone else by dragging out time. Anyone who studies law knows how long it takes to approve a theory as a law and processing it, let alone implementing it. With midbloods and highbloods living for several times the lives of lowbloods, who knows how ridiculously long the process even takes compared to real life law. Tyzias's approach is a gradual grind. But, she's willing to coat her hands in blood to make sure less of it will be spilled in the future. And maybe then the law will care for the truth, as she says.
*Both Joey and Xefros helped each other come to essential realizations about their perspectives.* Light is about enlightenment. Rage is facing uncomfortable truth in the middle of confusion and doubt. Xefros serves as a minder for Joey about how depraved trolls can be, just coating up certain details in pillow cases (like lying about Lynera's fate if she's deemed guilty). Joey wants Xefros to realize and insist that Dammek is an awful moirail to him. In the end, she still feels awful even when she agrees to Xefros's sentiments for a revolution that can kill when necessary.
The question is, what will Joey do in Act 3? Will she compromise her anti-violent approach to everything despite putting high value in all living beings and not wanting to be like her father? Will she remain steadfast in her virtue even at the cost of not only her and Xefros's lives, but also others? I wouldn't put it past HS to make both ends meet considering how resourceful Joey is (that is to also say, no, I don't think having to kill is the only solution).
Scratch's "lock and key" is more like Rose's cue ball, if that's how it will work.
Honestly I believe that scratch is helping them in the minor capacity he is to further push trolls in the direction he wants them this new rebellion against both him and trizza would lead to things getting even worse on Alternia that or I believe that joey and the hiveswap characters have a indirect hand in causeing sgrub to be found by aradia possibly the ruins that aradia found is a area within hiveswap?

Pretty much! I try pretty hard to stick really close to canon information, so I think odds are pretty good this is accurate, but there is still the possibility more information in later Acts recontextualizes what we're seeing here somewhat. I'm pretty certain Joey is either a Maid of Light or one other Classpect--but I'll get into that in one of the next videos :)
God I love your videos. Is so interesting to see all the small obscured hints hidden throughout just a couple minutes of gameplay. Hussie really is a genius, as are you for being able to pick up on these hints. Please never stop makin these videos!

Very Good! I have always liked Joey very much, and as a Light player myself, this has brought more claire-ity (he he) on why I like her so much. While I don't agree with some of your theories, this is quite spot on and fitting for Joey.
I also liked the detail about Joey's neglect and their effects on her. My parents were also not around much and now even more so because of my father's condition. While I do resent them a bit (they're also quite religious, especially my father, while I am in the closet), though not nearly as much as her, I always found her very relatable and interesting due to her rather worryingly similar life (hell, even appearance) to me. The light aspect discussion was also very interesting particularly. Speaking of which, I've noticed Lightbounds tend to invert their aspects (like Rose's descent into grimdarkness). Maybe you can talk about that? Inverting aspects or classes? Anyway I love your Homestuck and Hiveswap Analysis videos, I'm very sorry for the rambling!

If I crave knowledge of secrets, does that put me under Void or Light?
It could go either way, depending on what precisely you want to do with the knowledge and the secrets and why you want to do that thing. Class becomes very important here: for example, a "Maid of Light" and a "Prince of Void" could do fairly similar things but with different emphasis and tone and specific methods. An emphasis on Knowledge is even more potentially confusing, as there are Classes dedicated to gaining knowledge as well as an Aspect pair revolving around information itself.
I believe Joey's a Derse Dreamer, considering she usually keeps her classmates at arm's length, throwing the Alternian rules out the window to save both planets, and sometimes being mistrusting.

I think the reason that the god tier costumes look like/are PJs are because, when you are a kid you use your PJs as a costume, I hypothesize that if an adult somehow got to god tier in SUBRB, the costume would be more fleshed out (an actual suit of armour for the knight class, ect)

I'm not sure if Doc Scratch will play much more of a part in Hiveswap. It could be that protecting Xefros' conversations from the prying eyes of the highbloods will make it far easier to get Trizza out of the way and thereby granting safety for a newborn Feferi, who is integral in the creation of English. But we've all been thrown under the Huss Bus many times before

Hiveswap does take place in the Alpha Timeline. Joey's Pa is the exact same man as Jade's Grandpa, just earlier in his life.
I think by "Alpha Timeline" KitKatPotato is referring to the post-scratch Earth (B2), the one where SBURB was only in alpha testing when main characters started playing it, as opposed to pre-scratch Earth where SBURB made it to a public Beta that our heroes played (as well as countless others off panel). I understand the confusion, since the term "Alpha Timeline" is usually used to refer to the one non-doomed, self-propagating, stable time loop that lead to the creation of Lord English

(This is why I dislike Homestuck's use of the word Alpha, it has two different meanings when applied to the state of reality we're currently discussing. And it isn't a series of clever puns like Doc Scratch's name, either).
Logically, since they seem to be Jake Harley's natural born kids, they wouldn't have an equivalent. Of course, the same logically applies to Dad Egbert, but Dad Crocker is still a thing and appears to be basically the same guy, so it's hard to say.

I'd essentially just be guessing out of infinite different potential fraymotif ideas, so it seems better to me if fans just come up with their own. I try to stay focused on interpreting canon content and letting people come up with their own fan stuff from there!

Not really? I mean they're about equal? Like Jake and Tavros both fantasise about escape and heroism, but at the same time, Rose likes to write wizardfic, Vriska enjoys roleplaying and Aranea absolutely loves telling stories.
Eridan/Cronus were both hope players as well, but they were hardly imaginative. I feel like hope has more to do with delusion/ambition than imagination. Also I'm sure the class influences how a person under a certain aspect reflects the traits of said aspect so everyone is different.
Hope is about conceiving of a *concept* and then working to make it *real*. The abstract concepts that other Aspects tie into like Justice, Friendship, and the social order were all created by someone conceiving of them through Hope.
Light seems to be more about more *specific* acts of imagination like writing and telling stories, creating fanciful worlds and scenarios, and putting together different elements to make something new. It's more specific and personal and less about big thoughts, at least in my reading.
@@JD-hm3nw eridan and cronus _did_ both have a lot of imagination and dreams they stifled though - both of them were known to really love wizards and believe in magic and yet ended up abandoning that idea or denying it, which i think is often theorized to be tied to them being a prince and bard, classes which seem to have a complicated relationship with their aspect
you could say eridan bitterly denying his belief in magic despite how happy it used to make him even when he's literally wielding a wand and shooting giant deadly blasts is part and parcel for a prince of hope, if a prince can "destroy" their aspect 80
