Definitely my favorite of the original trilogy. It was the peak of the setting, the story, and Jill really came into her own as a character in this game. And then there's Nemesis, an antagonist that's never been matched since.

Really liked the outro with the voice lines. With games this old I really dont think you need to worry about story spoilers. I understand hiding the jumpscares, but I wouldnt sweat the story stuff
Jill didn't go with STARS to Europe because she stayed behind to try to expose Umbrella for what they did in the mansion. It only talks about the first game in the manual and sets this up as a sequel because... It is. It takes place at the same time as Resident Evil 2. As far as her outfit, she was a badass from the 90s. She can dress both sensibly, like RE1, and (when sitting at her own home) casually in an outfit that was very much prominent in the 90s. Her outfit wasn't a sexy dev creation, but a sexy outfit that was worn by real people lol
Used to think RE2 was my favorite of the franchise, but then I did a complete playthrough of RE3 Nemesis after being disappointed by RE3 2020. And, RE3 Nemesis became my favorite PS1 RE. Some may not like that you only play as Jill, but I think the devs made up for the lack of a 2nd playable character with the live selection aspect and adding some randomization to each playthrough. Plus RE3 Nemesis has the best controls of the PS1 games, even letting you go up and down stairs in actual gameplay. Even RE Code Veronica didn't do this on Dreamcast. I recommend checking out the book, Itchy Tasty An Unofficial History of RE. Apparently, even some Nemesis encounters are randomized. It's impressive what these devs were able to achieve on the PS1. Still, wish we did get that Hunk game. Poor guy has been robbed of his own game several times now. Umbrella Corp doesn't count, blah.
I can for sure see why people would prefer 3 to 2. I personally have more nostalgia for 2, since it was my introduction. But yeah, I can see aspects of 3 being better.

One of the best reviews of Resident Evil in general I saw, with the background and context, so that by the time you reached the Nemesis review itself I already felt part of a story. Totally agree with your remarks, and to me, it's a tie on #1 with RE 2, but definitely RE 3 had that additional adrenaline of Nemesis chasing you the entire game and being so harsh when you had those crowded encounters with the zombies.
there's a video on youtube explaining it lol, but it's just mental Tetris, you have to match the finished look by adjusting the 3 rows and think about them like stacking tetris blocks, so a horizontal and vertical will make an L shape(basically just matching) but yeah there's 4 variations so it might take some time to get it correct

Not sure if anyone's mentioned it yet, but it was explained why Jill and Brad stayed in Raccoon City, while Chris and Barry left the city. It is because of the forementioned party decided to investigate things further within the city, while the latter would continue the investigation outside of Raccoon City to see if there was more to uncover from Umbrella from their other HQ's. Don't remember if it was ever explained how Barry showed up and rescued Jill and Carlos in the last second though. Wouldn't surprise me if it was overlooked by the writers... If I'd have a critique that bothers me everytime I come back to it after playing RE1 and RE2, is that RE3's UI controls are worse than the first two games. In the first two games, you can be as fast as you want to be while in the inventory, where's in RE3, it kinda punishes you for it. I've accidentally used so many green herbs when I really wanted to mix them with other herbs. The pick-up/action proximity also seems to be slightly more strict compared to the first two games as well. Wierd thing to change in the third entry (especially from a time where reusing existing assets is very common), but no game is perfect really

RE2 by design is the bump from RE1 and can be seen as near perfect. But it does not match the replay value RE3 has. And RE3 is 1/3 of the size. The OST of RE3 is phenomenal. Nemesis was the notch needed for Mr.X. Mercenaries is so fun. It’s just well rounded for a short game. We all wish the remake was a true refresh. But oh well. Sticking to the classics.
I appreciate you doing a retrospective of one of my favorite series, RE3 will always live on as my favorite in the whole franchise since, just like you, it was the one I started with. I was absorbed by the gameplay and can't deny even nowadays Nemesis' appearance can still make me jump if I fail to evade him. Not only that but getting to finally explore Raccoon City to an extent and seeing the destruction and the corpses littering the streets was great as you tried to escape the damned place. For me, along with zombies and lickers Nemesis became an icon of the franchise and considering not only that they included him on the second live-action movie but all the figurines made of him I can tell they felt the same which is why I don't understand what happened with the remake. RE3make is literally the worst remake I've ever seen done. I don't think I had ever seen a newer version of a game downsize in content this severely, undersell the main pull of the game (Nemesis as a consistent threat) this badly and ruin the story and characters like they did specially with Jill. This is specially poignant when you compare it to RE2make or RE4make where they clearly went all out to make as full of an experience as they could (I still won't forgive them for ruining the A/B scenario stuff on the remake of 2 though).
Alright, since I am sensing a recurring theme here--why do you even cover the Mikami games if you've barely played his games yourself? There has to be an unwritten code violation about that somewhere.
I love the Jill starts complaining about how someone needs to do something about this, like she's not a special forces cop and she was the one who was supposed to do something. OR, she knows the police are corrupt and in league with Umbrella and shouldn't expect the cops to do something. It's such a baffling scene for her. She doesn't ask Brad needs medical attention or if he has a plan. She just complains about the situation and lets him - HER FRIEND APPARENTLY - wander off into a monster infested city. Like she didn't spend the long weekend watching the entire thing burn from her window. Also, Rebecca should've been a minor character in the game. Have her work with Jill occasionally, in the second half of the game, or in uptown or she's in the Rail car. Maybe have a brief sequence where you play as her in a small section of the city - or the hospital - Then have Nemesis kill her. Would really raise the stakes.
I mean, as expressed on her diary and other media she and the other STARS members did try to expose Umbrella just to be blown off by the chief of the RPD Brian Irons and it got to the point where they were being mocked for such a traumatizing experience as just make-believe they created. Furthermore based on documents from RE2 Chris got the FBI to do a full investigation on Irons that uncovered he was receiving bribes from Umbrella. Sadly being that Raccoon City was under Umbrella's complete control through their patronage there was nothing they could do to expose the situation or inform the populace without looking crazy and that led to innocent civilians becoming victims on this incident. THAT'S what she laments, I also think she refers to it as "justice" because this is something they definitely won't be able to hide but it comes at a horrible cost. As for Jill and Brad, Jill tries to get a full grasp on this event and the current situation of the RPD while Brad is absolutely panicked after having Nemesis stalk him and get close to killing him a few times. This much is obvious considering he isn't even telling Jill what's coming after them and runs away from her knowing that both of them being in the same building will be way too good of a target for Nemesis to wait for long.
Funny I consider RE 2 to be the Lesser experience and RE 3 the far superior experience. Sure is short and only has 1 campaign, 1 campaign with a lot replayability, better puzzles, more action and Nemesis so yeah is pretty easy to say this for me.
I really don't get the criticism of Jill's outfit, mainly by north americans. Is that really considered revealing there? Where I'm from (Europe) you'd wear that to a café to see your girlfriends :3
Haha I mean I don’t have a problem with it. In fact, her wearing it was the first thing I ever saw for the series. I was only pointing it out because of how her design in RE1 was to deliberately cover her up to try and make her equal to Chris.
@@Paraspectre Fair enough, I suppose I was thinking more of the 'omg she looks like a hooker' people.(damn you, Duke Nukem). To me, she just looks stylish. But then I change into the Dino Crisis outfit as soon as I can.
