I wish you personally all the best in your health journey, I live in Alabama also and it just came out that Alabama is one of the most unhealthy states in America and where I live, almost everyone is obese, women, men and children! I've never seen people wait in lines out the parking lot and into the street at fast food restaurants like churches chicken, McDonald's, burger King, captain D's seafood etc. It's insanity and it really doesn't look good for the future of my people here where I live.

Working out is great but means almost nothing if I can’t control the food. Praying to God to help me through it because I know I’m fat. And it’s strange because everytime I mention losing weight to other black people they tell me I shouldn’t lose it.

I would have to disagree. Jamaica has fat people but nothing in comparison to America. Jamaicans walk everywhere as a form of transportation... Hrs of walking daily contributes to calorie burning. That in itself would prove this argument to be inaccurate. Burger King and fast food restaurants are rarely found in the country sides of Jamaica where the locals live.
McDonald's and Burger King, etc, are mainly placed around and close to tourist areas... since they appeal more so to tourists vs. born and raised Jamaicans. Fast food is American culture and not the culture of the locals. If offered a Jamaican plate of curry goat or a meal at McDonald's, they would prefer their own cultural foods.

@@velvetmonroe9441. Are you saying what Muta is saying isn't true? Do you really know Jamaica? Almost every main town in every parish has some type of fast food chain, whether foreign or local, that both urban and rural folk think is a personal and family treat to patronize. Increasingly, rural folk see fast food establishments as normal, especially the small Jamaican restaurant version. These small, local cook shops and restaurants are patterned off of a fast food and convenience food model and the menus and ingredients are almost as unhealthy as those used in their larger and foreign owned competitors.
What you failed to absorb from Muta's message is his observation and warning that Jamaican culture and diet have deteriorated and that this is manifesting in the people as complacency, obesity and ill health.
The deterioration is also evident in the many small fast food type local restaurants, supermarkets, petrol station convenience delis etc meeting Jamaicans' increasing demand for the very same unnatural toxic altered foods that are killing us at the big fast food chains.
Jamaicans eat for taste and 'belly full' more than we eat for health and we follow the lead of every latest negative trend that is the worst of foreign lifestyles and America. These trends are reflected in the types of food establishments that Jamaicans constantly patronize.
Whether at a big international fast food franchise or a local fast food chain or small restaurant, Jamaicans demand and spend hard earned money on toxic oils that fry our daily dose of chicken crispy just the way we like it, with a pool of artificially flavoured oily gravy to bathe an excessive mountain of starch washed down with a gut busting gallon of sugary fizz. Jamaicans know that this type of diet will result in obesity and disease but most of us do not really care. We are fully invested in instant gratification. and in the deceptive high salt, high sugar, lab chemical tastes more than in natural tastes. We nsist on feeding those unhealthy tastes because our culture encourages irresponsible behaviour.
There used to be the argument that junk and unnatural foods are the cheapest and that is why most Jamaicans eat them. However, in today's Jamaica people dedicate large proportions of their income to fast foods because they are addicted to the artificial substances in these non-foods as well as addicted to the profiling and pretense of 'I have arrived'' or 'I can afford it'. These addictions trick many into spending substantially on the lowest quality of food while claiming that better food is too expensive or that we do not have enough time to prepare healthy meals for ourselves and our families. All of those mentalities are part of modern day urban culture and habits in Jamaica that have crept into nearly every corner of the country. So please do not try to make it seem like Muta doesn't know what he is talking about. Maybe to you it seems like most Jamaicans live like they are in a health paradise. We live in a place where that can be true, yes, but the majority of us do not act like it. Jamaicans' love love LOVE, almost worship, foreign brands and lifestyles. Our belief that the worst foods for our health are the tastiest and best family treats are going to keep making us sick and will kill us until we take responsibility for what we put in our own mouths. Wayward women are a huge part of the problem. They commit many abominations with their mouths and neglect of their natural care giver roles. They harm and neglect themselves so imagine what they are teaching their children. Men should also take responsibility for the health and culture of their own people. If our elders did not fail in their teachings and example then the norm would be health, self sufficiency and intelligent self preservation.

Btw, the outside lanes in grocery stores is typically also where the bakery and fried food stations are located…for persons who live where such luxuries are available to begin with. For the context of Jamaica, where most of the processed foods are being imported, and ground provisions are often scarce and very expensive, there is obviously opportunity for the government to enact policies to better facilitate more healthful dietary habits for residents, since the oldest and most popular policies of shaming and patronizing, have not worked anywhere on earth, not in all the centuries they has been practiced by those who have a preference for using such tactic. I am so glad he is speaking on this. I didn't realize how many young people simply cannot cook anything. The amount of processed fast food consumed is insane. It's crazy when you hear someone say: "I only had Kentucky fried chicken - the small 3-piece dinner, a large soda, fries, and 3 Dunkin Donuts" You think? We have been so normalized to eating this garbage we start cherry picking what is good, so-called healthy. Garbage is garbage no matter the packaging.
Another thing, these processed fast foods have chemicals to make it addictive so you become lifelong brand customers. It was the same with cigarettes. After you eat the crap, you are not satisfied because the saiety hormones, leptin that keeps you from overeating have been shut down and the eat more hormone, ghrelin is turned on.
People have to realize, the food industries/corporations are about profit any way they can get it. They are not about your health. The next step is medication for a list of chronic diseases. Come on folks, take your life in your hands. Look at it this way, the word HEAL is hidden inside the word HEALTHY. Wishing everyone a change of thinking, if you put the right healing things in your mind, your body will follow. All the best!!!👌🏽✊🏽💪🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽

You are 100% right about the women getting too big. I came back from America after ten years and I could not believe the size of these women in Jamaica. Whenever I take a taxi and there is a problem fitting four passengers in a row, it is always the oversize women that cause the driver to fit one passenger less.

Thank you for this truth and honesty Mutabaruka❤ Growing up in a Jamaican household in America, fast food was a rarity and almost non existent! We used to cry, tears rolling down, pointing to the McDonald’s thru the car window only to be told, “No! dinner at home is betta Dan Macdonals!”😂 Back then it felt like torture and deprivation, but TODAY!smh I’m Eternally grateful for their wisdom! And I’m a great cook!❤😉🥰

Great video!! Nothing but the truth here. Thankfully I came from a generation where cooking from scratch was encouraged thanks to my mother and grandmother. I'm so passionate about cooking that it's what I do for a living (blogger/vlogging hence my screen name) especially being Caribbean because I can see for myself what Mutabaruka is saying. I think people are leading more of a convenience lifestyle where its easier to go to a fast food joint instead of going in the kitchen. That and the art of cooking is slowing being lost and it's encouraged. People are forgetting how to cook their cultural foods and what they do eat is unhealthy anyway and couple that with a lack of exercise and it's a recipe for disaster.

I was just talking about this with my mom. It's one thing to be fat and rich, but when you're fat and living at poverty levels that tells you there's something going on with the food you have access to. It's not just the giant fast food that are the problem. The local take out restaurants are sourcing heavily processed ingredients as well. The whole food chain is sick.

So right Muta! We must do better, I noticed the same thing in Ghana, West Africa. You never saw fat people in the past there, now…so many fat people and so many fast food places there. They even have a name for the overweight…..they call them “ bontose” people!

White people need to hear this too. Lifestyle choices in general have affected everyone’s health for the worse.
I just found out the reason my thirty something daughter doesn’t eat in fast food places is because in her own words “ mom you ruined me for chicken. You always cooked everything and we hardly ever went to a fast food place. Restaurants sure but not those. I don’t like the taste of them because of that.”
And she meant it in a good way.
