As a Heat fan, giving him the max was one of the worst deals in the franchise at the time. He stopped trying after he got paid. Either he would be disengaged most of the time or he would chase blocks. I can't tell you how many times when the Heat lost games, he would be smiling. It's like he didn't care about wins or losses. As long as he got his stats.

For real. I remember his breakout game on the Heat where he put up a triple double with 12 blocks and I became a fan of his game.

I watched every game Hassan played for the Utah Jazz and he would just give up and be super disinterested in plays a lot. Like he didn't want to be out there. Yet, when he was interested in the game and wanted to put effort into it, dude was an absolute monster. Could average 5 or 6 blocks a game if he wanted to. That's why i think he is out of the league is cause the effort level waned a lot. I have nothing but love for Hassan, a lot more to life than just basketball, I wish him the best.

Jazz fan here, that's kinda cap. Hassan was really bad when started games during Gobert's absence, but overall he was one of the best backup big men in the NBA.

I'm a Heat fan and I remember well being so frustrated by the way Hassan defended, especially after getting the bag. Such a great athleticism and so little effort outside the paint. Somehow he managed to be a great and a terrible defender at the same time. He was a beast 1 on 1 inside the paint, but he wouldn't switch and defend the perimeter. That would have probably worked back in the old days. Nowadays you just knew that of he was going against a big who can't stretch the floor he will give up easy threes.

Hello from Lebanon, Casey. I had the chance to watch Hassan Whiteside playing in Lebanon. The Lebanese version of the Malace at the Palace happened in Whiteside's first season in Lebanon, but neither this nor the bombing Whiteside talked about were the reason behind his departure.
He played in Lebanon again in the following season (2013-14) and when his team at the time made the Playoffs, he quit on them and performed poorly so that he could leave and go to China without getting injured, so the coaching staff ended up waiving him.
Before the release, his team was down 0-2 and faced elimination in this best-of-5 series. After he got replaced, they pushed the series to the limit and were practically one layup away from winning this series.
The bottom line is that Whiteside's side of the story (especially the reason of his departure) is not 100% accurate.

Some players see life as more than just their profession. Not that Hassan didnt work extremely hard, but he didnt see a benefit in continuing on the NBA level (to him) after the max deal he received. Hes dominant when he puts his mind to it, but he understands that life is substantially more than basketball

That was McGee till the went to the warriors and they shaped him into a better player both on & off the court. With the right people around Hassan, it’s possible.

I view a lot of flash in the pan players as the effect of opportunity vs effectiveness. Often on bad teams a player will put up great numbers. Even an ineffective player can average high points, blocks, boards, ect if they have ample opportunity. Whiteside always struck me a player that worked well with the Heat system and has physical ability. However Whiteside never adjusted well to the league adjusting to him. He didnt have a positive effect on winning and was just bad working within most defensive schemes. He lacks understanding of the game and apparently motivation too, which is unfortunate because he has a ton of talent.

The great Hassan Whiteside is one of my favorite basketball players in the NBA! He is one of best shot blockers and rebounders in the game! He also is a better offensive player than people give him credit for. He has a good mid range jumper, bank shot....and, of course he is a tremendous dunker! Yet, to his credit, he does have a good, solid three point shot. However, teams have not afforded him the opportunity to be an offensive threat. But like most of you have pointed out, when he gets frustrated he shuts down...quits. Regarding his personality? I think that people have mislabeled him as being a bad guy,... locker room poison. When he was with the Kings, the young guys loved him! Most of them said that he was hilarious! They loved being around him. I think that he needs to be accepted! I think that he needs to be wanted! He thrived when he was paired with the great Chris Bosh! He needs to be around players like Wade and Bosh... around players that mess with his personality. He could have been one of the greatest centers in the game! He still has the opportunity to make a big impact!
