I don't know why, but since i was little i love the atmosphere of the airport. This feeling of freedom, of discovering or rediscovering a news country, flying to the clouds.
not sure about the airports, but the malls & office buildings are definately 90s. people never hang out at malls anymore. it's all online now. same with working in the office. its all online too but at home.
@@winko567 Airports don't elicit the same sense of class and wonder in people that they did 20-30 years ago and beyond, chiefly because a much larger cohort of society has been able to afford air travel since the year 2000 thanks to budget airlines... Back when PanAm was still flying, only the middle-class and above could afford to travel more than once every 5 years, whereas nowadays, you have working-class people taking small to medium distance vacations from an airport every year or two. Also - other than some upgrades to the computing technology behind the check-in desks, airports have barely changed in looks for almost 4 decades.
I think part of it is that a lot of them were built/renovated in the late 80s/ early 90s, and there were so many movies/shows/cartoons centered on them. I think that’s true for a lot of things for many decades, *but* I think why they stand out now is because they are these vast, bland spaces usually populated with people, and the liminality of them being empty (actual or hypothetical) is very alluring. I think our idea of these things cements them in the 90s just as much as the reality of them does.
I recently had a layover in the airport in Guam, and it had major 'abandoned mall' vibes (probably helped that I landed at night). There's an entire like... half? of the airport that's completely unused (at least that I saw, not a soul back there). Has that old carpet (and the smell of old carpet) too. Then the closed duty free stores, and there was a small group of people in a little cafeteria around the one open cafe. Just a very 'vaporwave' feeling airport experience lol.
@@garstrum4401 Went to Turks and Caicos few years back. Gorgeous island dont get me wrong. But that first picture, first 20 seconds of the video, was literally exactly how the baggage claim looked lol. But dirtier.
I travel a lot, for long distances internationally. I love airports and the whole experience of flying. It never gets old to me. I love being in places with lots of people but also alone in my thoughts.
Boy - I sure don't miss it. I used to have to fly once a week for 6 months and it was the worst period of my life. Near constant jet-lag, 8 hour work days that turned into 14-18 hour work days with flights, always waking up and having that moment of 'Where am I?' in some strange hotel. Relationships with friends back home that deteriorated because I was either too tired or missed key life events being 'out of town'. Sure, you make some road friends/business partners - but that's not the same as life-long friends or family.
never forgot the profound feeling of being a kid and your whole family is awake at 5am to get into the car, and its still night time., you're going to the airport, which is weird, because they never travel. so this must be important. I can feel the buzz in the air, and smell the dew of a beautiful tucson morning yet to come. And I''m very quiet which is also unusual but this is all new to me and im sleepy so im just observing and waiting
It’s hard to put finger on…for all of my life, I’d look at old pics/videos and get nostalgia in a direct sense. It’s not even that. I feel like I’m looking at a world that seizes to exist now. It’s like our old timeline was destroyed, we’re over here now..but we have remnants of that old world we can look back at. I know that sounds deep haha. It’s just how I feel.
Remember 90s airport vibes? Back when getting through security was like visiting your grandma-just a quick hug, no questions asked. And you could walk your family to the gate, then wave like you're in a dramatic 90s rom-com. Now, I have to take off more layers than I did at the actual 90s!
I don't remember it being like that in the UK, but then again we had the IRA and things like this going on. What I do remember about the 90s airports were the carpets, I miss them.
Services provided by bin laden and a group of psychos decided to kill Americans on Sept 11,2001.Looks like a lot of idiots forgot about that. Since then a LOT of things changed, specifically, the way we board a plane. Read some books or Google it you all.
The legend has it, it is still somewhat similar to this on the Japanese domestic airlines/regional airports. I can't confirm from personal experience though.
This channel panders exactly to my anemoia of the 90s! Even though I was never even close to experiencing these times, they just feel so real to me. Indulging in such content gives me the strong impression that the 90s were soft, inviting and so very "human".
Back then I remember you’d have your choice of chicken breast with wild rice or lasagna. If you flew out in the AM, you’d get the Jenni-o turkey egg breakfast burrito. Good times!
I was born in 1993, so it's interesting to sense the vibes and music in airports in the decade I was born in. I only vaguely remember flying before the 2001 incident.
Just got back from an international flight! Something about airports, even though it can be hectic, its always a great place to relax at with some coffee and grub. Back before 9/11, they used to let you freely walk up to the gates and watch the flights take off. Miss those days
I have always loved the airport atmosphere (more than actual flying). Observing all these people around, wondering where will every one of them be in only few hours time. New York? Tokyo? Buenos Aires? All strangers with completely different lives, who will never ever meet again and learn anything about each other, yet being together for a moment in this weird 'no-place' which an airport is. Airports are a bit like sci-fi teleportations stations, they are kind of exterritorial, not really beloning to the physical space (even if they are located on a specific physical spot, of course).
I remember as a kid, going to dc to see my uncle, u love airports, and flying, idk why, but I guess the feel of a mall like setting with the gift shops and food places, with the big window with a view of a city or the runway with planes landing and taking off every second, knowing I’ll be on one of those planes soon, playing with my little airport plane set I got for cheap at a gift shop, just has a nice atmosphere to it, idk.
90's airport "Good morning, would you like smoking or non smoking?" Today Airport "TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES, BELTS AND COAT. PUT LAPTOP AND TABLETS IN NEW BINS! LETS GO LETS GOO!" - dumbledore said calmly (while using a cattle prod)
