Special Duties Unit (SDU)
Established in 1974. In response to anti-terrorism, hostage rescue, emergency response to gun crimes, and underwater search and rescue
After 1978, the land and water attack teams were expanded based on the British special forces (SAS, SBS). It is the first special police force in Asia capable of carrying out missions in land, sea and air.
Due to the particularity of Hong Kong's political geography, the internal defense and anti-terrorism forces of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region are composed by paramilitary police forces. Therefore, the SDU is one of the very few units in the world who plays the role as special force in a police system, same as the US FBI HRT , German GSG9 and more.
SDU has handled hundreds of shootouts, arrests, armed searches, underwater search and rescue operations since established, dubbed the title of "Flying Tigers" by Hong Kong citizens for their achievements and service.
In order to maintain the top level, SDU has cooperated with special forces from all over the world to communicate, exchange, and training for long periods. Units including the US Navy SEALs, the US Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU), US Army Special Forces, Combat Application Group (CAG, 1st SFOD-D/Delta Force), the British Army Special Air Service (SAS), the British Royal Special Boat Service Regiment ( SBS), GSG9, etc. Foreign SWAT teams and special forces also sent personnel to Hong Kong for study and communication.
