    Hm. This is not a sequel diss, but I found the praetorians in the Mandalorian episode to be WAY more intimidating than the red guards in both the sequels or even the original trilogy.

      Sadly the fight choreography in that fight in the last Jedi was terrible in combination with the directing and oblivious editing.
      Anyone with an orange belt or higher in some martial art saw several places where the Guard could have just killed Ray and Kylo but instead just stood there waiting awkwardly for their next que.

    Easter egg: Did anyone notice the Praetorian Guards gave Paz a "soldier's death" like from the movie "Gladiator"? A "soldier's death" was a fatal overhead sword blow to the back of the neck. It was cool to see a warrior get an honorable death.

    • @phil3299

      @PsychoArk The Praetorian Guards showed Paz respect with a 3 to 1 odds knowing his sacrifice... a warriors code of honor, even if it was brutal, swift with no mercy. Throughout human history, the worse odds shows a warrior's worth on the battlefield. That is the point. Paz had a jetpack. He could have easily backed out of the fight, but that is not honor. To add, Paz even fought like a gladiator with his shield in one hand and a sword/knife in the other.

    • @chocotastic1
      @chocotastic1 Рік тому +9

      The soldier's death is sword to upper back severing the spine, not much pain and quick. The other alternative would be decapitation which was big with Japanese warlords who needed to bring back the heads of enemies or their armor as proof of kill.

    • @undercov3erboss340
      @undercov3erboss340 Рік тому +15

      I noticed that too; I think they showed him a bit of respect for facing the 3 of them alone considering these Praetorian Guards probably have serious experience. Maybe they have even fought against and killed Jedi before. They seemed so cold like it was effortless to them and like they'd faced far tougher opponents. But I think they honored him with a merciful swift death for making a stand and for his sacrifice; the guards are trained as warriors after all. They could have done far worse with Paz

  • @undercov3erboss340
    @undercov3erboss340 Рік тому +606

    The way the Praetorian Guards easily overwhelmed Paz and slowly ran him through with their laser pikes despite his heavy armor was horrifying. One on one he might have held his own but they were trained to work together and they walked in that room to kill Paz. (I believe Gideon dispatched them shortly after the Mandalorians began their retreat; likely because he wanted to test their prowess in battle.) They had highly specialized training and were more than a match for some Jedi Knights; so Paz had little chance against them alone with his bulky armor and being worn out from just demolishing a bunch of stormtroopers. It will be interesting to see more of these guards in the coming shows.

    • @undercov3erboss340
      @undercov3erboss340 Рік тому +43

      Also an interesting note that these red guards are still around; these 3 we see may even have been around since the destruction of the Republic. If they are they're super experienced and likely had experience fighting against and killing Jedi. Especially since that's the reason Gideon hired them, his fear of Jedi like Luke. If that's the case with these new guards then it's not surprising Paz met a swift death. They seemed so cold and ruthless like he was nothing to them, like they had faced far tougher opponents.

    On another channel I heard a very disturbing yet quite believable theory about the scene where Paz is killed. If true, it shows the brilliance of Favreau and the power of Kathleen Kennedy. Jon was pretty pissed about how KK was intervening in the creative process and seeing the paint on the wall, decided to “throw” the writing of this season and clock out. This scene is how Jon really feels about his battle to regain the trust of the fandom while being in the crosshairs of the KK cabal and Lucasfilm suits. He killed off his own alter ego in this episode, and used one of the most iconic and arguably worst-used characters in the controversial sequel trilogy to do it. We made fun of the throne room scene where Snoke’s guard were dancing around Rey and Ben as they cut their way through the guard in overtly ballet-like moves. Jon took the silliest fight scene from the ST, made it represent the fallacy of Kathleen’s interventions, and used it to show us in coded action sequences what he’s going through and why he’s gonna check out of this place. If this is true, I say fare well, and well done, Mr Favreau.

    No one is talking about the fact Gideon was wearing a Darth Maul helmet. Like it had all the horns on it like Maul's Mandalorian sect. Darth Maul is a part of this story to some degree. He is dead I know at this point in this story but there has to be more than just a stylistic reason he is wearing Maul horns on his helmet. Did they use Mauls DNA to clone? Sidious said he had plans for Maul when he was captured in The Clone Wars cartoon series. Maybe Moff Gideon was dealing with Maul the whole time. Maul was a Mandlor for a bit and right around the time of order 66 he escaped the Jedi when Ashoka let him go. So while Rebels events have all already happened in this storyline there has to be some Maul connection we are all missing here.

    I think it would be cool if they revealed the Empire's Red Guard to be Mandalorians. Their helmet is somewhat similar to the design of the neo crusader armor from the old republic.
    From what I've seen of the Praetorian Guard(admittedly little), I did not find them particularly intimidating, but that was mostly due to poor choreography. I'm not a big fan of the armor either. With the layered plate armor it's a little too busy, and it reads a little too medieval Japan. I know Lucas was heavily inspired by Kurosawa and Darth Vader is basically evil space samurai, but I think in this case the influence is a little too apparent and it takes me out of my imaginary space opera. I do like the idea of the Praetorian Guard being an elite taskforce, but the problem with guards is that they don't do a whole lot unless they're defending the person they're guarding. What made the Imperial Guard awesome was that they looked intimidating, but then Palpatine was all like, "Leave us. It's chill. I got this Luke kid in the palm of my hand. There's no way something crazy could happen that would lead to my demise." As an audience we had to imagine how badass the Imperial Guard must be. Haven't watched Mando S3. That clip looked pretty cool though, so I'm happy that they've given the Praetorian Guard a little better showing.

    • @LewpyDrewpy714
      @LewpyDrewpy714 Рік тому

      You mentioned the, "guards, leaves us." These guards where no regular Praetorians. They where trader Jedi, sworn themselves to the Emperor. And so Palpatine force bonded them to him. Why didn't the Guards sense something going wrong with their Emperor? And show up to kill Luke and Darth Vader. It's was a standing order, "If Palpatine died, Darth Vader will be eliminated." Also, Darth Vader was doomed to die and he knew this. His suit was connected to Palpatine's life monitor. In Legends, Palpatine slowed his body down sooo much that the monitor thought he was dead. Sent a signal, through all known hyper net stations in the Galaxy, to slowly shutdown Vader's life support suit, increase the pain, and play a really f-ed up message for Vader. Palpatine did this to Vader a couple of times.

    They were compeletly useless in the Last Jedi because even Rey was able to defeat them so I REALLY hope that they are much more effective this time.

      you missed the point of that fight scene then. She was suppose to be a jedi badass at that point weather you like her character or not.

    At least there were (finally!) some badasses also with the imperials, not only cannon fodder for the heroes. Until now it seems that the imperials were a Red shirt army (no pun), then these three guys appear and make short work of one of the best fighters of the show.

    This definitely helps put the praetorian guards in better perspective. Rewatches of TLJ has kinda made me feel less impressed with them b/c of how quickly they all died. Hopefully this and other new content puts them in even better perspective

    What is with the baddies in star wars thinking constantly subjecting someone to pain makes them better? Lol

    Yeah these guys were really cool but they were completely wasted and their choreography was so terrible and absolutely pathetic in that throne room fight scene that it made them look like clowns... Instead of attacking as a group they literally danced around each other and then waited for 1 to go after the other. I don't know what was worse the way Kylo Ren fights with years of training or the way they fought and how convenient it was when weapons just disappeared after Rey gets a lil booboo... I'm actually shocked when people say that this is the best choreographed seen in the entire Star Wars library... That upsets me on many levels because whoever thinks that just has not watched anything else...
