  • Crash protection is expensive and changes the look of the bike. Is it worth it? Here I run through the setup that I use for road and low level stunting and give my reasons for my choices.
    You may note that a lot of the items are from ‪@BagorosPerformance‬ because they make parts that look good on road bikes. Links to most parts below'

I've been putting this one off for months because I was hoping to be able to follow it up with the road bike protection video including the crash bobbins but I think I need to grow my channel a bit more before I see them. Thank you for the video. I crashed my 390 Duke when practicing slow tight turns in the parking lot. The crash bars protected the engine side but the front brake lever bent and the mirror and the bar end got scrapped. I need more protection on the bike before I continue practicing and your video helped me to gather some information about it.

    Every KTM 390 owner should watch this. I appreciate your effect placing the bike on the ground to demonstrate your point.
    Does the crash bars by itself actually protect the radiator or is it too short? Or do you need both the crash bars and the front axle bars (whatever it's called)?

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks. Crash bars do most of the radiator protection, followed by the rear cage which stops the bike not rolling over too far. If I wasn't running the rear cage I'd consider a proper rad guard but then you can't run the crash cage with most - except the adventure style crash cages and even then you have to be careful because the upper mounting point can damage the frame if its not properly supported (which most aren't)

      I find them a bit short. If you want a slick road bike build then go with the Powerparts or better yet the Bagoros Performance shorter sliders - but there is a small risk of scraping the fork/ radiator. David,
    You’re so well versed in the parts for the 390 I hope you can help me find better options. Whilst practicing motogymkhana I drop the bike at 0-5 mph.
    I have an SW Motech engine guard (pretty, svelte!, protective, invisible!). I am searching for something as demure as this for the rear-especially to protect the aftermarket silencer!
    Your (rear) crash cage is garish for me. Can you recommend anything else?
    And you’re right, the rear peg frames act as protection on the left ~well enough, but, on the right the oem silencer was slight deflected and helped by the tin shield at the base. 220419

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  2 роки тому +3

      I've seen quite a few complaints about the SW Motech engine guard damaging the frame and not protecting the engine - maybe its ok at 5mph. You have a choice between pretty and invisible or choosing something that will actually protect the bike - you can have one or the other There is very little choice in rear protection which is a main reason why I use the rear frame that I do - there are other stunt cages out there for the rear but even more in your face. You might see if you can find a long enough delrin slider that will screw into the swinging arm - I have seen this, for 5 mph maybe ok.

    • @Anna-di2cw
      @Anna-di2cw Рік тому

      SW motech crash bars will destroy your upper engine mounts eventually. The construction of those bars is not proper for the bike. I used the powerparts crash bars (in the video) and front fork sliders for my gymkhana sessions in the last season. Crashed about 15 times so far, it did really well for such a tiny protection kit. The only thing that’s gone is stock handlebars - it’s bent heavily. I also bent my tank slightly 😂 Can’t wait to test out the same kit David has (Rok Bagoros front pegs, subcage and handlebars + powerparts crash bars) the next season!
      Forgot to mention shorty/folding levers - they are an absolute musthave. Stock clutch lever will break and take away its mounting system. Had that replaced as well.
      Aaaand… if you ever use handguards like powerparts make for bigger CC KTMs, please take care and keep an eye on them. I had those, they eventually went loose, and I was too careless to tighten right away. When the bike went down the very next time, a handguard rotated and smashed the TFT display of my Duke 😂 So, take care

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  2 роки тому +1

      Unlikely to happen - tft runs its own software - and it needs to talk to the bike ECU, so you need a software engineer who can hack into the locked ECU to rewrite the code in your 250 to talk to the tft software - and it's all CANBUS. If you want the 390 tft on your bike the cheapest solution is to upgrade to a 390

    You look better on the BMW GS ADV than this one according to your height and appearance

      This is a taller bike than it looks, it's just like any other dirt bike. One day I will be experimenting with the ADV bikes - I've not owned one since the 1980's

    Have you got insurance on your 390?

      I ride it on the road. It's fully insured and the insurer is aware of all the mods.

      @@Massacheefa Ha! No. They will look to charge you more premium - it's more about if you don't tell them then it gives them an excuse to refuse to payout on your claim - and on any claim from someone else leaving you uninsured.

      Racing, stunting, all are expensive - why reconsider?

    I agree that we need to protect our bikes. However, I must admit that those protection gears make the bike looks absolutely aweful, ugly. I cant stand how the bike look after installing all of those essential protection accessories.

      You don't have to go the full stunt route. You do that when you know the bike is going to be hitting the ground. You can go a much more subtle road route where you hope the bike doesn't hit the ground but will help minimise the damage by shifting it to replaceable and more subtle accessories instead

      @@MotoMirius Thank you. I see your point. But the crash bar is really ugly. Sadly for me, I tried Gymkhana last week and I felt in love with Gymkhana right away. It means that I must install KTM or SW Motech Crash Bar to explore the limit of my Duke 390 2016 AND my riding ability without ruining my bike. For normal street riding to work/home, I will never install those ugly crash bars. I saw them in real life from my friends' Duke 390 before.

      @@patrolduty8715 crash bars are not essential - you can use case sliders - but appreciate they will likely only last two or three slides - but that is the price you pay for keeping the look of the bike. For most of last year my bike did not have crash bars on it, only case sliders - and if you go with the black ones, probably hardly visible. But yes, crash bars will be good for practicing - same is true of stunting - lots of the good stuntriders don't use the cages for displays, just for learning and practice.

      @@MotoMirius yeah, I dont mind replace sliders after low speed practice crash. What makes me worry about frame sliders is they can damage my chasis compared to crash bar with proper link brace.

      @MotoMirius  Рік тому +1

      @@patrolduty8715 Indeed, which is why I use the Bagoros Performance ones which have a connecting bar though to the slider on the other side of the bike. I prefer to buy my crash protection from a company that is built out of stunting this particular bike. I am reluctantly going to put the cage back on soon because I want to get back to playing with the bike and see if I can work up to getting the bike through a 180 degree slide/ drift of the back wheel and I know that will involve a lot of low speed drops until this time I actually learn how to do it.
