  • Let's make a start on some basic crash/ stunt protection on the KTM 390 Duke
    KTM powerparts crash cage seems to be a better colour match than the aftermarket copies, but if buying new be aware that the threads are painted, so either carefully use a bolt or a M12x1.5 tap to clean the threads before you install.

    Nice addition to the bike. I hope the frame isn't twisted, I don't think it is from a slide down the road, but you never know. Good luck with the rest of the bike.

    Hello, thank you for your videos...can you share the Torque specs on those mounting points?

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  4 роки тому +1

      Front and rear are 49 Nm. The top doesn't have a specific torque, so I would just tighten it. Be aware that this all assumes that there is no paint or powdercoat in the threads - which there normally is with the OEM guards

  • @1xplorer
    @1xplorer 3 роки тому

    The engine crash guard is really good for protecting the engine.
    I installed this without using any special tool,
    The difficult and most important part is the engine holding knot (the one you got the broken hanger)
    I got no issues installing this crash guard.

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  3 роки тому

      That's good. Sometimes people have trouble getting the bolts in, especially in that top mount because the powdercoat is in the threads and needs to be cleaned out before you put the bolt in.

    • @1xplorer
      @1xplorer 3 роки тому +2

      @@MotoMirius One thing that I did to make it easier is to use the one bolt included with the crash guard, then use the hammer 🔨 to smash it lightly enough with rubber or any clothes at the head of the original bolt, to push the old one out while the new bolt being inserted into the hanger hole.
      But be careful to smash lightly.

      @@1xplorer great tip, did you use a jack or rear stand to help, or just the side stand ?

    • @1xplorer
      @1xplorer 3 роки тому +1

      @@JeffOConnorAU No, nothing additional just hammer and the clothes/rubber for protection for the bolt head.
      I think you can imagine how I do it, first thing first:
      - park the bike 🏍 in stationary with side-stand
      - unscrew the engine-hanger bolt, the one that we will install the crash guard
      - keep the original bolt in place,
      - use the givens bolt that come with the crash guard, the longest one
      - put the new bolt’s tail ( this part has screwed pattern) right on the original bolt tail (the one we are going to push out from the engine and hanger hole)
      - try pushing it with hammer lightly in order to insert it in the engine-hanger hole
      Tip*** You can use additional supporting for the engine in case it drops from the hanger, but as long as you smash the bolt well, you don’t need it

    Hiya just bought sone crash bars unsure on the year tho gonna try for them to my 2021 125 duke do the bolts what’s already in the bike work or do I need more bolts

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  10 місяців тому

      If you bought the KTM Powerparts ones they come with longer bolts. If you saved money with used but didn’t get the bolts or bought the Chinese ones that don’t come with the bolts then you’ll need to buy the bolts. Which need to be the right grade of steel so probably hard to find and not cheap.

    Great video and looking forward to seeing and hearing about your adventures on this KTM. Do you recommend any places or sites to buy accident damaged bikes?
    Regards RR

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  5 років тому

      Cheers for that. There are a couple of places that do it on eBay. The one I bought from works for the insurance companies so you have some confidence that it isn’t structurally damaged and is HPI clear. Whether it’s value for money is harder to judge. Resale value is lower and whilst you can get it insured I’m pretty sure they will be painful if you ever need to claim. On the other hand there are plenty of previously crashed bikes being sold to unaware buyers. And bikes with clear log books are now coming back marked up with previous write offs even the sellers were unaware of. There are good reasons to do it but there are drawbacks too of course. Great to hear from you again. 👍 skäl. David

  • @billascustkp

    Hi David, as you watch the bike from the left side, the hole of the crash bar under the exhaust pipe does have a bolt?

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  2 роки тому

      The crash bars fit with three bolts, two through the main engine mounts - one front, one back (the one you mention) and the frame mounting of the engine mount. All three require bolts - the stock ones are too short.

  • @alastairtheduke

    Would you happen to have a link or name of the bars that protect the radiator that you mentioned?

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  3 роки тому +1

      There is an Indian made more Adventure oriented version of these bars which also include radiator protection but I don't recall the name. If you are running a road oriented bike you could use the KTM case guards with the Bagoros Performance radiator guards. I wouldn't recommend the ones that just bolt over the radiator because these risk damaging the frame in a crash (and have done) - cheaper to buy a new radiator than a new bike.

  • @hank1900

    if you remove the 2 support rods and if without the jack to support the weight of the engine block, will engine block drop down? I don't have jack and I wonder if it is safe to do the installation on my own.

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  3 роки тому

      It's always good practice to support the engine when removing engine mountings, and if the rear of the engine drops down even a very small amount then it could be quite hard to get the new rod through - a basic jack is all that is needed, it doesn't have to be an expensive hydraulic unit. Most people will know someone who has one or can borrow one from their car. Good luck! Skäl David

    Hi Moto Mirius, I appreciate the video as I am buying a cage for the engine but my question is regarding the fork sliders, I havent installed the front left one because i didnt want to risk doing anything without knowing about it, so my question is when you remove the front left bolt and install the slider in its place do you have to torque it to spec or just rely on feeling, and is it safe to remove the bolt and replace it with an alan screw bolt?
    Thank you very much for your content as it helped me install a slip on on my 390 all by myself.

    • @MotoMirius
      @MotoMirius  Рік тому

      Hi and thanks. It would be better to torque to spec if you can. I would leave the bolt - allen screws are more likely to round out and you would need to find one of the same grade as the bolt.

      KTM makes the small Dukes 125 to 390 in India - I believe they have assembly plants elsewhere but I think the parts are made in India - it's all subcontracted to an Indian bike manufacturer Bajaj - KTM will make all the up to 500cc bikes (Duke, RC and Adventure) in India.
