Geddy once said that hearing the audience sing Closer to the Heart back to them was spine-tingling to the whole band, which goes to show how much mutual respect there was between fans & artists, love you reactions & awe of their talent

    Andre & Dominica
Love the channel, and I’m really enjoying seeing you two discover Rush and become as obsessed with them as the rest of us.
If you can find the time and want to delve a little deeper into the band and their history, I’d highly recommend you check out their video ‘Rush - Beyond the Lighted Stage’. It begins with the origins of the group and how they started out, and then goes on to document them getting in The Professor, and then on to their eventual take-over of the world! I think you’d enjoy it.
    Keep up the good work!

Rush came to my hometown, in Indiana, many times as they were located in Toronto, CA not far from us for a band to come to play. I first saw them in 1977 and went to their concerts every time thereafter. Such a good band and people. I wish you good folks could have seen them live at a concert. I appreciate your wonderful reactions. :)

I'd say Rush is a national treasure. They have been honoured in Canada's walk of fame, music hall of fame but their highest honour imo is the Order of Canada. Which is the highest honour issued to a civilian.
Rush were never a radio friendly band in their early years, due to length of song (not very radio friendly) and style of genre (not very mainstream).. Rush's popularity as a band was mostly obtained by word of mouth and their fans vs the various publications most bands relied on to get exposure. Rush during their early years mostly got negative press vs anything good to say about the band. During the late 70's and early 80's Rush started to move away from the long story telling songs and started to consolidate the elements of prog into a smaller package. These songs could vary from 4 to 7 mins and therefore a bit more radio friendly. However, I feel due to bad press in their early years, Rush's reputation followed them into the 80's and beyond even thought many of their 80's songs were very favourable for radio play. Having said that, Rush imo is the most popular "band" to come out of Canada. Other musical Canadian artists may have obtained more fame because their music was more mainstream/popular but imo Rush smokes em all.

Rush were known and appreciated in Canada initially as a concert draw, but they weren't radio friendly enough for mainstream success. But this video was from tbe Moving Pictures tour in 1982, and by this time they were charting with Tom Sawyer, Limelight and The Spirit of Radio, and the success of both albums, Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures placed tbem at the very top in North America and the UK. They were shoulder to shoulder with Van Halen, Ozzy Osbourne and ACDC in the early 80s.

    Canadian here...
Huge Rush fan going back to the late 70's ( I'm 55 ). Rush are definitely considered rock royalty up here. Even people who aren't fans of the music recognize their incredible musicianship and they are a huge source of pride for many of us.
I've seen them 13 times, all in Toronto (their hometown), every show they put on was outstanding regardless of the venue.
It's such fun seeing you guys, and other reactors, hear and see them play. I highly HIGHLY suggest you guys try and watch and react to the excellent documentary Rush Beyond The Lighted Stage sometime. A great look at their career from early days until 2010ish.
You will love them even more seeing this film for many reasons.
Nice reaction... please do the song Red Barchetta from their R30 official concert film!

It is always a valid way to react, to read and digest the lyrics ahead of the reaction to the music. Some like to react totally cold, with no research or without reading the lyrics and that is fine too. Just different methods and different styles of reactions. I think with Rush trying to get an understanding and appreciation of both the lyrics and the music on a cold listen is a bit difficult. Love your reactions and hope you always feel free to do these reactions in whatever way works best for you. Feel free to read the lyrics first so they aren’t distracting from the rest of what’s happening in the music. Great job you two! 😎

Rush was big (and still is) in Canada. They were on rock stations all the time by the end of the 70's up to the mid 90's. But they sold more records outside Canada (population is only about 35M). Andrei, the word is effervescent!

I remember when the live album 'Exit Stage Left' was first released I was slightly disappointed with the mix thinking that the guitar was hidden somewhat by the bass & drums. Pretty soon though I completely changed my mind & I think the live versions of these songs are the best. Geddy's bass & vocals are outstanding & the whole band are just so tight. I still listen regularly to this album. Great review as always.

I think there is a lot of overlap between the Canadian and U.S. media markets, and that would have been true 40-50 years ago, as well. As huge as Rush was in the U.S., it is inconceivable that they were not also popular in their home country. A fair few Canadian artists in music, movies and books have become household names in the U.S. and vice-versa. We are cousin cultures -- not the same, but mutually appreciated.
