“A book is one of the greatest fetish items in the world.” Peter’s prediction of fewer, but more niche, bookstores that are deeply connected to community and enlivened with event programs is ringing true 15 years on. I’m also struck by what an excellent interviewer you are, Tara. Incisive questions, but also holding time and space for your interviewee to respond without interruption. A gift to listen to.
Hi Lucky Henry. You worked me out. Noting what is happening to bookshops - and a friend of mine (Guin) is about to close hers - I found that interview. And Peter was and is so brilliant. And so right. The notion of a bookshop as an event centre is crucial. City Lights has always done this. And they have survived. They also had - and have - a publisher in house... So the business plan in there - in these tough times. And thanks mate for the kind words about interviewing. I try to be so respectful. Another human has stopped their schedule and inconvenienced themselves to talk with me. That has got to be respected. And now that lovely conversation gets a new life. Biggest hug - let's build this future... txxx
I get that mate. I do. I love them, too. But digitization and deterritorialization is hurting that business model. But as I said to Lucky Henry - if a series of events and publishers can be clustered - survival is possible. Biggest hug! And booksociopath - I want to be you. You know it :) txxx
Hi Tara, a great interview with Peter. I am glad that he made great reference to the work of Steve in getting Vrrilio over to City Lights. I did not know that you undertook this interview 15 years ago. It sure has aged well. cheers, doug
Thanks Doug. We were actually in San Fran for a couple of reasons. City Lights were doing a focus on Virilio - and they had a signing for Steve. All his books were there - with a great audience. It was terrific. And then we went to Hawaii so I could do a keynote on Ed Media. It was a fab trip. And yes - I thought it was a powerful conversation about books, bookshops and regions. So timely :) txxx
He was amazing, Shae. So many of our friends are writing books at the moment. I want to make sure there is support available for them. You are the best :) txxx
