mann, I remember having this game on the 3do as a kid. I was able to beat the game but by taking turns with my brother to keep things fresh. Unfortunately, every kid who asked what my first game/console was, all I got was weird looks because no one knows what the hell a 3do is
lol same, my dad was into gaming when I was born and he had a PSX and 3DO - I played a ton of 3DO and have never met another person who grew up with it. NFS, Soccer Kid, Ballz, Battlesport. Of course, as time went on I played the PSX more, Twisted Metal, GTA2, Crash, Spyro, CTR, etc... and eventually went Nintendo until Xbox 360, but 3DO will always be my first console lol
Never heard of this game. Looks like fun despite its flaws. The art style reminds me of Super Back to the Future 2 for the SFC. But at least this runs smoothly and looks to have good collision detection. Very informative. I'll keep this one in mind if I ever get a 3DO.
Never played this but did play a Megadrive game called Marco's Magic Football which was pretty much the same thing, couldnt get into it back then tho & haven't tried it since.
I do find it odd Soccer Kid and Marco's Magic Football were released around the same time sharing the same concept. It's like The Illusionist and The Prestige being released around the same time.
Great review Kris! "Nooks and crannies" are back @10:40, thanks for that! ;-) Seems like a pretty frustrating game to me, but it has a certain charm to it indeed. Ps. What happened to your subs? I Thought you were heading towards 6500, but it's below 6000 now..?
Haha, it's been a while since I've played a nooks and crannies platformer :D As for subs, I believe your eyes were playing tricks on you: socialblade.com/youtube/user/implantgames/monthly Growth is as flat as ever with no spikes or dips :(
implantgames Yeah you're right.. but damnit, you should have way more subs. If only you would make a bullshit unboxing or prank video, subs would go through the roof 😬 But in all seriousness, other retrochannels often have the host in front of the camera - like with your podcasts. Maybe give that a go in editing - combined with ingame footage? Maybe do some funky cosplay to attract viewers; dress up like Sonic of Ristar haha!
Good game 7/10 in my opinion, it will be great one if You like platform games. Also while I have finished amiga cd32 version I think that 3do is the best version because of extended resolution in comparison to more narrow amiga version, that extra space is extremely useful in boss fights. Also did You find how to custom Soccer Kid clothes colors? On Amiga there were option in main menu for that feaute, so You can make him look like Your favorite soccer team.
Are you sure this runs at 60 fps? Did you test for this, or did you just say that because it seemed smooth? My main concern about 3DO for 2D games in general is that the system doesn't seem to have any way to develop 60Hz games, at least for the majority of 3DO consoles. Only a portion of the Japanese FZ-1's (like mine) have a switch to put the console in a 240p mode, which is 60Hz. Otherwise, the 3DO is 480i, with every other field being automatically generated by the system in a manner configurable by the dev, which results in 30Hz (25Hz PAL).
I was a bit disappointed that you didn't compare this in any detailed way to the other versions. I realize that was not your goal, but just was my goal. ;) I am really curious how this stands up to the other versions, especially the Amiga/CD32 and PlayStation. Especially as I am doubtful that this runs at 60 fps on the 3DO.
I do like seeing more of these Amiga ports. Here's an idea: Do you have any plans of getting Amiga hardware and playing Amiga games on their native platform?
Haha, I buy what's available at my local shops and don't really seek things out. Chuck Rock II was $5 and Soccer Kid was $3. I love deals like that :D If an Amiga ever becomes available for a can't-refuse price, I would consider it :)

For me this is a 6/10 game. It ain't bad, but not great either. Not one of the great games on the system. It is frustrating and too long. It also looks like it would easily run on the Mega Drive and doesn't use the power of the 3DO.
Freakish. I was playing Doom in 1994 (PC) so i wasn't reading game magazines anymore. I thought people hated this game. Most people i talked to had the opinion of 6/10. 9 out of 10 means those reviewers were high AF, or paid for the review. Jumping should be a big part of the review score. I'm no big RayNMan fan, but i can see RaynMan getting 9 out of 10. Soccer Kid? Jesus wept. Just look at his face in the thumbnail.... Freakish and disturbing.
Charming game with a unique premise. I vaguely remember this game from my childhood, I had the SNES version, and it was a little inferior (like no FMV cartoon intro, obviously) but virtually the same game anyway...I remember I used to be mildly confused by all the different mechanics you could do with the soccer ball, but like you mentioned, it can be learned in some time. It's no masterpiece, a part of me thinks this game should've been shorter as it does indeed recycle too many elements as mentioned in this review. Oh, and also the fact that it's way too hard to get all the cards and trophy pieces to get the good ending in a single run, that kinda sucks too. =/
I've been lurking, but I always watch your (great) content. This game intrigued me as a kid, especially the 3DO version. Nice to see your take in it!
Glad you are still around Tales!

Your voice is great

I picked this up for $3 at Press Start weirdly enough. Been having good luck with 3DO games lately.
As always, a well detailed review! If I would've heard this game as a kid, I probably would've bought the game as I love soccer lol.
I would have loved this game as a kid and I don't love soccer :D

Just out of curiousity, are you planning to review Bubsy because you mentioned it in this review and your review of Mario Land.
I haven't owned a Bubsy game in at least 10 years haha, and I hope to keep it that way ;)
Have you played the similar Marko's Magic Football (or just Marko in the US I think)? It's pretty good!
Not yet, some day :)
That game is better than Soccer Kid.
Nice content! Keep it up!
That opera singer is hilarious.
And he sings!

14:00 Isn't their cheats to skip levels or passwords?

Of course, its the best version of this game. The music is absolutely fantastic, the gameplay is ok. Gex is better, but this game isnt bad as well

Yes, its Still a good game but not so mainstream, it was more like those friday night rent that will give you a nice experience voice to voice
Very unique gimick, enough to make me want to try it out.
If you dig platformers it's worth a look.
is it just me or does soccer kid look like an older version of bobby from bobby's world?
He does have a disproportionally large noodle, that's for sure!
Think this is on Megadrive, Marko's Magical Football. Unless it's just very similar and not the same series.
Similar game, different developer. Strange, I know haha.
Nice game. I'll try in the future...
A platformer can't get any more european than soccer kid :)
Haha, perhaps not :D
Ranson Curbersmith Actually.. the title alone is proof that it's NOT European at all :-) It should have been called Football Kid. Soccer is soooo USA.
Haha yeah...that's right!
Ironically, I happen to live in florida.

That seems like a solid score, above average game, nothing more nothing less.
Bubsy this is not eh? So, that said, do a review of Bubsy Fractured Furry Tales on the Jaguar. :D
3do Vision is the best
Great console doomed by poor pricing and licensing decisions.
Was it ever good?
I have rarely been a fan of the "Amiga Platformers" myself.
should be called Football Kid 😤
The title is odd for sure.
I know of one other platformer where the protagonist uses soccer balls as a weapon.
ua-cam.com/video/nqzw51cbLA4/v-deo.htmlm42s
Now there is an obscure pull!
20:39 I strongly disagree. Shooting people and animals with a soccer ball is violence. It's true there is no _gore_ here, but plenty of violence.
