May we all take a moment to appreciate the excellent quality of this video? The sound is marvelously clear and well mixed, the footage is gorgeous, the editing and cutting are beautifully done, the information is presented in a clear, well researched manner, and the still images placed among the video footage are stunning. Tony and Chelsea's videos continue to raise the bar of quality on UA-cam, and I, for one, am glad to have the opportunity to see their videos as often as I do.
Thank you for the awesome review. LOL at the ending. First off, I just received your book in the mail and I love it. Going through it now. Secondly, it's good to see all the youtube camera reviewers getting along and referencing each other's work. Thirdly, and most importantly to me, I'm glad that you review these cameras with regard to pricing of both NEW and USED offerings from different manufacturers. That keeps it very real to normal people type viewers. Many reviewers shrug at the price difference between the A6300 and A7SII/A7RII like it's no big deal, but that's a lot of money even for a prosumer, and it's a TON of money for a hobbyist. I like when the review mentions the best offering in that category (7D) or used alternatives (used A7S original). That's as real as it gets for normal people and makes your channel very trusted and valuable to us regular shooters. Keep up the good work!
I love your videos because they're always unbiased and rational. All I've heard about the Sony is 6k 6k 6k. Thank you for making me have a fair opinion about the camera not based on 6k
Engaging video, guys, that I watched all the way through. Just returned from shooting in Myrtle Beach and enjoyed a little of that sunshine! I'm planning to add an a6300 in a few weeks specifically for video work, so I'm glad to hear this is an area of strength.
Very surreal to see +TheCameraStoreTV +PhotoRec Toby +Tony Northrop all in the same video. I'm sure this is the case with many, but I went through film school watching your channels--and learning a lot more about videography than I ever did in school. And now I'm a working professional, in large part thanks to you guys! Keep up the awesome work.
+MichaelTheMentor I’m surprise that you and Dave Dugdale were not invited. You make some of the best camera comparison videos out there with heavy emphasis on the Auto Focus system. You would be the perfect tester for the a6300.
+MichaelTheMentor - I really like your video on Auto Focus with the D7000 Series - It is great Michael. I send that Video to friends if they buy Nikon and will continue to do so. I put together a playlist that includes you, Chelsea and Tony among others - all Nikon focused for the most part. You should be included.
+MichaelTheMentor You're too hot to handle the A6300. Sony was afraid the A6300 would overheat just by you touching it. Tony & Chelsea are cool, that's why the invite snub.
For the screen being hard to see in bright sunlight, there is a setting (in A6000) that changes the screen brightness. I changed it to the preset "Sunny Weather" and found the result surprisingly good.
I ordered the Sony 6300, but then took the leap of faith (and many reviews on UA-cam, Including Tony & Chelsea's) and upgraded it to a Sony A7RM2. The results are amazing and I've not even tested with the Sony GM lenses (also on order) yet. Great review guys.
Bought the A6300 yesterday before I saw this video, but I'm glad I did because I may have waived over going to the A7mkII. (My bak manager may have had a comment or two in that regards!) I've been using a Cannon Powershot SX210 IS for years whilst the kids grew up so the Sony was a major step up into the real world of photography. Two weeks ago I didn't now my F stop from a bus stop but your videos have helped change that. This video confirms my descion in that I want something small and light that doesn't need a backpack to tote around. The Sony is small and light enough and I've ditched the kit 16-50mm for a 50mm prime so I can get most of what I shoot. A second hand 55-210mm OSS for the kids sports events completes my kit, for now. I've also gone out and bought two additional batteries which aren't as high a capacity as the stock Sony but I hope should cover my recreational type use. Would love to see an 'over the shoulder' video of how you use the A6300 in various type of photography. Especially like the ability of the A6300 to save regular used settings in a profile. Perhaps you could do a video showing the settings for sports, portraits, wedding functions and outdoor landscapes? Really liked the format of this video and I'm going to try your book to get somewhere near being able to do the A6300 justice. At the moment its a racehorse being used to deliver milk! Definitely not regretting my chioce of camera, for my needs its awesome.
+Marvin_PA We'll make a tutorial just for the a6300, but the a6000 tutorial should work fine for now (they're almost identical): ua-cam.com/video/OQ1-lTg6AoQ/v-deo.html Also check this video out: ua-cam.com/video/xWXBS1D5aSk/v-deo.html
One thing that I liked a lot about this review was the amount of alternatives given. Very often when Sony, Sigma or whatever invites someone to review their product, the review is something like:"Oh yes, it was the best thing ever, everything else is rubbish", while here T&C immediately mention alternatives, even from other camera makers.
Great review I am glad it wasn't like the Artisans reviews. You pointed out better options, and gave your honest opinion. This is why I trust your reviews and really take what you say to heart.
One advantage to upgrade the a6000 to an a6300 is astrophotography. The raw files are much better and show no green artifacts when pushing the exposure.
love you guys. A5300 look good. I use a A5100, I love it; the physical size/weight is great.I keep the Sony 50mm1.8 on constantly. Sold the kit lens on eBay as the aperture wasn't large enough + I hated that lens. I echo you, I wish Sony would offer APS-C steady shot zoom lenses that go at least down to F2.8. Full frame's too heavy/expensive/bulky for me. G, London
I'm really considering getting this as a backup camera to my A7 III for weddings. I'll eventually get another A7 III, but this would be really useful as a travel camera, too.
I have been waiting for this camera, and while I am a little disappointed by the missing touch screen for quick video shooting, I will absolutely buy it. And I will probably get a speed booster for it, since this way I can finally really make use of my full frame Canon lenses that I got fairly cheaply and that have suffered on my cropped Canon 70D... :-)
Thank you Tony and Chelsea for reinforcing my gut feeling on waiting for this camera. I was always wondering if the jump to the 6300 would change things, but for my workflow that is not the case. You speak of a jack of all trades and master of none. That this camera is good at a lot of things. You would be surprised on how many of your points the Panasonic flagship bridge camera the FZ1000 can fill in those needs. Just my two cents. Thanks for the video
Wow! I really appreciate you guys thinking about people who don't have a lot of time but still want an honest review. Loved the TL;DW part. Thanks a lot. :)
As Tony mentions at the end, this may be the best all-around camera available right now, but the overheating issue is real, inconsistent, puzzling and maybe unfixable. For serious sports and wildlife, or any photography where you're most likely going to crop anyway, the Nikon D500 is it.
I'm brand new to photography, but I tend to be brand loyal if a company is consistent. Out of the gate I'm leaning Canon and will check out the Nikon compacts this summer. The lack of touchscreen on Sony cameras is baffling to me. It just seems that something ubiquitous like the Canon 70D should have established a movable touchscreen as the standard. Great review!
Really well done. They've certainly left room to iterate by omitting ibis. I also agree with previous statements of yours re. a focus point nubbin. They could build out the OK button, rubberize it and and have it default to the flexible spot's/ zone focus control. Leave it clickable like a game controller thumbstick.
I would like to see a video getting a more detailed comparison of the a6300 vs. 7D Mark II really showing the pros and cons of these cameras and how they work with sports and wildlife photography and filmmaking.
Thanks guys. This is a great, honest, balanced and informative review. I'll probably buy the a6300, but now I know which cases I shall use my other equipment.
you can turn the middle dial with the lower part of the thumb. you don't have to move your entire hand to turn it. most issues can be solved in very simple ways like that if you use the camera for a month or so
hahaha cool !!!! thank you for being brutally honest and so professional and thorough. This is gonna help many people. When I watch a Tony Northup video. I know I can trust it.
I am very impressed with the video on the 6300. 1080p at 120 and 60 fps is really sharp. I didnt have any issues like others with 120fps being softer, be it cropping in. The low light, for me, was a bit of a let down.
Nice review tony & chelsea. But just like videomakers post, i feel like there is a "more negatives than postives" overtone to this review. Still, thank you for the content. I personally think the GH4 has more to offer professionally and even amateur wise but for a "stills and 4K video camera" as of right now this cannot be beat imo for cameras $1k and lower. M Night Shyamalan? Lol
I got this camera just this year 2024 (used) I just want a camera to play around using affordable manual lens. So far it’s fun! and as of this time the Sony apsc lens grew to a lot of selections and other 3rd party lens makers. Peace!
I returned a6000 because bracketing for HDR was useless. You have to press 3 times manually with finder the shutter-release button.... not acceptable, even more I use 5 shots in extreme conditions... Could you check just for curiosity how useful bracketing is on a6300? BTW I like you said right upfront that Sony requested and paid for production of this video. Thank you for your work guys!
Nice review. 6300 is to expensive for what it is. 4k is saving it but than no mic. input... For that money I would complete some cheap dslr system with primes, wide, lights, almost everything. Those things are not big at all and they can be stealthy with pancakes, 50 stm/D etc..Most important, most of them work with 0 real problems..
Great job! This is one of the most all around informative and balanced approaches to a general use cameras I've seen. Even better It has help to remind me of a sense of balance I wish to achieve in my expectations and use of photography at this point in my life. Sense 4K with all its largesse encumbrances is something I still wish to avoid, I'll stick with my Olympus EM-5II. Coming from the days of 35mm film cameras, and moving to the digital world with Canon T2i which I found to be a very good learning tool. I find the EM-5II a joy to use in comparison to any camera I have use previously. The stability of the 5-axis system has given me sharper pictures then I could have imagined. I find I'm using the tripod a lot less than before (less gear to carry). The number of assignable buttons, the greater ease of the menu system has made this one of the most intuitive and flexible cameras I've ever used. With a very small canvas bag (again, less gear to carry) I can carry around three lens and the camera which has translated into having the camera with me much more often. The beautiful light and compact lens with this able camera, of course has some limitations, but it sure has brought back a new sense of pleasure in photography. Many Thanks again, you two
00:37 Funny, the word "reluctant" is exactly the word I have in mind when I look at that portrait from Chelsea - and in that moment she says exactly that word in a different context :-D
Very good review. I ordered one today, got one from Best Buy with lens for about $150 off open box and another $100 in points because I signed up for a BB credit card. Don't do that if you want to make monthly payments because their interest is 25%. That used to be illegal. Some of that videos looks great on my Dell 4k monitor but my internet speed is a tad slow at 15 Mbps and playback works better at 1440p. My main concern is 4k video and I'm not sure if I want to keep the camera after I get it.
great review, I really love my A6000, the only downside has been the lens adapter for canon lenses, but besides that, I have taken this camera for most of my trips lately and made some nice videos out of it! :) Hope to upgrade soon to 4K with this one ;)
Overheating is my main concern since I live in Miami and 78 degrees is what we consider cool. I need a camera I can use outdoor during the summer with temperatures in the high nineties.
+Mel Feliciano Yeah, even in CT it would overheat regularly if that's the case. I haven't heard of anyone else having that problem... I don't know if it was just a fluke, or what.
+Tony Northrup There have been several reports of overheating on the aA6300 Facebook group moderated by Max Yuryev. Even “Sony Artisan” Jason Lenier reported the issue. Maybe is something that can be fixed through the firmware, like they did with the A7RII. Max have gained a reputation of doing thorough camera and computer hardware tests with visual documentations to support his findings, but I believe it was to early to come to a conclusion on this one.
Great review! My NX500, and Nikon D3200 are still good for now, but this winter I'm buying another DLSR. Probably will sell both my D3200, and NX500 for $800, and pick up mid range DSLR for $1200 or less from Nikon, or Cannon.
What are the changes of you getting the XPro2 in hands? I think both aps-c sensors should perform nearly the same.. but i would think the Fuji would get a better dynamic range for landscape and better ISO performance (even with corrected ISO).
Size is a big deal sometimes. I currently have D610, but I'm waiting for Fujifilm X-T2 and a comparison with A6300 to see if that changes or at least for a second camera.
I still think the main selling point for this camera over the other song a7 series and the nikon d750 is that not only is there 4k, but it is also shot from a down scaled 6k image which makes it insanley sharp and the slog3 capability.
+emptyskullify Yeah, the video does look great, but to follow-up on the video capabilities, our a6300 overheated several times while we were trying to use it to record, and it totally ruined our shoots. So for now, I'm not recommending anyone buy it for the video capabilities.
Thanks guys for putting the effort and time into producing great content. ALSO, I really appreciate your "Fair Disclosure" statements to lead off the video. You build integrity one action at a time, but you can lose it all at the speed of light. Keep up the great work!
Nicely done. Love the ending hahaha Im thinking about selling my GF's t3i with kit lenses and buy an used A6000. I was checking Fujis, but they are kinda expensive right now. She wants a nice camera and small. Any thoughts on lenses to go with? I would prefer a cheap and ok zoom lens, nothing really fancy, I could buy adaptor and use my big 2.8 zooms when needed.
I had the Panasonic g7 and the Sony a7. I sold both for this. Still has not come in. That said I don't think I would reccomend either of those over the a6300 from what I have seen. A A6300 with a speed booster will be hard to beat. Now the a7r will be better for landscapes or product photography. The a6300 will likely be a better overall camera like you said. Don't get me wrong I do love the a7.
dennytenny I really wish Sigma would just make a focal reducer too. It would be great. I am not sure about sending back. I really wish there will be more thrid party support for Sony. Tamron and Sigma really need to start making more lenses. Rokinon does but doesn't have af for those who want it. I don't use zooms much but I would like to use a 70-200 one day. So we will see. I think even the metabones is suppose to work well on the a6300 just not as smart as the Sigma.
Video seems so mix. Comes off like you guys really didn't want to like and trying to push people to DSLR's still. Then at the end saying it's one of the all around cameras you can buy...
+Adam Mckeithan They can't afford to look like they've sold out to Sony. Nobody will take them seriously ever again, no matter what review or suggest as best. Mostly they are saying the obvious, an older full frame DSLR will give better noise/low light than cropped sensor. Valuable info for non rich people
+I don't know Why do people hate the truth? Despite having 400+ AF points the camera still can't focus as good as a 19pt AF system on a DSLR with subjects moving towards or away from the camera. The camera was getting hot shooting stills in 78 degree weather? We get well over 100 deg weather quite often in Australia so it would be useless here. The review was very good and showed the strengths and weaknesses of the camera. As per the summary it's a great all-rounder, but for photographers specialising in particular areas of photography it's not the best camera to buy. It is clearly a great camera.
Shooting with a 70d (family members) and a A6300 with a 18-105 f/4 g lens I found the a6300 was able to find focus better and faster. Shooting all day the a6300 never over heated in 80F weather sunny. Summer will be the real test but don't think we see much of a issue here. Only real problem is battery life. With extra batteries and USB charging (everyone should do that!) the issue slowly disappears Think a lot of people are having a hard time handling the truth. Mirrorless cameras and Sony are catching up and offering more and more features while canon pumping out camera like the 80d that seems like it should been release in early 2015. Really Sony has step up to plate with new lens and a great camera for 1k. Still think the people wanting to stick with dslr will talk down Sony. If you look who's really moving the camera game forward and putting better and better cameras in people hands it's Sony. This will be best selling camera of 2016 and dslr fanboys will cry about it
So it overheats while taking pictures in 78°F, hunts for focus, moving AF is a pain, runs out of battery too quickly, memory buffer locks up the camera... okay, I think I might pass it up.
Very nice and informative review. I was gonna hold off on the A6300 but since my A6000 was stolen over the weekend I am seriously thinking of buying the A6300 when I can since I have so may E-mount lenses.
The TL;DW Comparison to the other cameras are great! Liked! Can you do a comparison between the A7II and EM5 Mk2 5-axis stabilization in terms of handheld video shooting?

Tony & Chelsea Northrup should i buy this for music videos?
This is the best review I've ever watched on YT. Keep up the good work. It's not too short to miss the point, and it's not too long to be boring.
Nice job guys! Thanks for the shout outs, and sorry about the Instagram competition!

I love you Chris.
+TheCameraStoreTV Love Tony and Chelsea, but you go on and represent Canada eh. Hoping you guys make an appearance on their live show soon.
I see you in 4:27 lol~
+TheCameraStoreTV boring but sensible
+TheCameraStoreTV Thanks Jordan :D

haha, best ending ever! nice job T&C and Justin and Siobhan. nice to see you make review where you arn't in your studio Tony
:)
+Anders Fiskum We prefer being out of the studio, it was just too cold in CT :) and thanks.
I like the quick as well as the full review format.
Was expecting Tony to pull off a Don Johnson at the end, driving one of those power boats, Miami Vice style, shades n all.
Bought the A6300 yesterday before I saw this video, but I'm glad I did because I may have waived over going to the A7mkII. (My bak manager may have had a comment or two in that regards!)

Thanks for the great review.

The Chelsea flip at 5:38 made my jaw drop. She is awesome! Nice review.
Did Sony get rid of the "sunny" option for the screen? On my A6000 it makes the screen ridiculously bright when I'm outdoors.
Perhaps your best review ever! Great job guys.
Every video review on youtube should swap their intro for the TL; DW summary!!! Thanks for that..

Excellent overview at the beginning and very useful detailed review. Thanks Tony & Chelsea!
That ending killed me. Cool review! I just bought mine and I'll do a A6300 vs RX10 ii soon.

Thanks guys. This is a great, honest, balanced and informative review. I'll probably buy the a6300, but now I know which cases I shall use my other equipment.
Just started vlogging with the a6300 and video editing for our brand page - thanks so much for all the tips! Mahalos from Hawaii!

You guys have the best reviews and tutorials....thank you
this might be the best video ive ever seen on youtube on my 2560x1600 monitor
love your stuff
+herbyverstink Thanks!
Enjoyed the review. I would love to see more production like this.
4:26 the camera store dude!
hahaha cool !!!! thank you for being brutally honest and so professional and thorough. This is gonna help many people.
When I watch a Tony Northup video. I know I can trust it.
+Nagual Pro I'm sure that Jason Lanier would agree.
+kuruji haha for sure. Jason is a great guy though
Can you do a comparison between the a6300 and the RX100 M4? I'd really love to see that!
Great for landscapes.....if cloudy.
Hi Tony. What kind of camera bag are you using in the last shot ? Great video as always.
I am very impressed with the video on the 6300. 1080p at 120 and 60 fps is really sharp. I didnt have any issues like others with 120fps being softer, be it cropping in. The low light, for me, was a bit of a let down.
+Eric Rossi Was the low light noise a let down, or low light autofocus, or both?
low light focus was perfect, noise really.
You guys always have the best reviews.
Lol
Nice Review. Thanks for the pros AND cons of the camera. I get really tied of "infomercial" caliber reviews.
I got this camera just this year 2024 (used) I just want a camera to play around using affordable manual lens. So far it’s fun! and as of this time the Sony apsc lens grew to a lot of selections and other 3rd party lens makers.
Peace!
seems like you can't depend on it do to never knowing if it will OVERHEAT.
The only good cheap zoom on the a6300 is the 18105G, which is a bit massive unfortunately. :(
the a6000 allowed you to go to FB direct from the camera (as do a7 series and the a6300 when the app is released)
+Murphy the Turtle Yeah, they got to FB, but they don't let you tag people or anything.
The ending was great! haha. Thanks for the review.
Thank you for your work guys!
nice review!! ihaveab a6000 it doesn't seem upgrade will help me as a landscape shooter better to invest in lenses
The a6300 4k video is actually better than that of the a7s2, as it actually has more detail because it has a 6k sensor.
Many Thanks again, you two
It overheats on a 78-degree day? Fail.
The 5D III is better for birding? You're seriously putting that ancient AF system up agains the a6300? the a6300 will shred it. :D
00:37 Funny, the word "reluctant" is exactly the word I have in mind when I look at that portrait from Chelsea - and in that moment she says exactly that word in a different context :-D
4:26 Hey, Chris Nicсolls from CameraStoreTV! :о
Loved the ending. Good stuff!
Great presentation guys!
Ahh... This is when you guys got your tans... Nothing like a paid vacation. Nice upload.
great review, I really love my A6000, the only downside has been the lens adapter for canon lenses, but besides that, I have taken this camera for most of my trips lately and made some nice videos out of it! :) Hope to upgrade soon to 4K with this one ;)
Great review and in love you guys show other options as well. 👍🏻
Seems like a good all around camera
Ending was great
Overheating is my main concern since I live in Miami and 78 degrees is what we consider cool.
I think both aps-c sensors should perform nearly the same.. but i would think the Fuji would get a better dynamic range for landscape and better ISO performance (even with corrected ISO).
nice one guys loved it, even though i'm not really feeling the camera.
@13:07 "Tony has been watching too much M Night Shyamalan" ROFL!!
Nice Review BTW...
weird, as the lack of lag in the viewfinder is mentioned in many reviews of this camera too, and it's your biggest "down" point.
skip to 2:45 for the full review with no spoilers !! ur welcome :>
Size is a big deal sometimes. I currently have D610, but I'm waiting for Fujifilm X-T2 and a comparison with A6300 to see if that changes or at least for a second camera.
Sony is the "jack of all trades, master of none."
+Tony & Chelsea Northrup Ah I see. So do you recommend I keep my d750 for both vids and stills?
Thanks guys for putting the effort and time into producing great content. ALSO, I really appreciate your "Fair Disclosure" statements to lead off the video. You build integrity one action at a time, but you can lose it all at the speed of light. Keep up the great work!
I saw chris from TCSTV. You guys in Miami together?
sony invited a bunch of photogs and reviewers to review this camera. all expenses paid.
With extra batteries and USB charging (everyone should do that!) the issue slowly disappears
Think a lot of people are having a hard time handling the truth.
This will be best selling camera of 2016 and dslr fanboys will cry about it
Thanks Tony, I always enjoy your honest camera review. Is this compatible with LA-EA3 adapter?
+Andy Yoon You're welcome. We didn't test that adapter, but I think Hugh Brownstone did.
So it overheats while taking pictures in 78°F, hunts for focus, moving AF is a pain, runs out of battery too quickly, memory buffer locks up the camera... okay, I think I might pass it up.
I watch you two primarily for the humor. As for upgrades, skip a generation and wait for the Sony a6666
Very nice and informative review. I was gonna hold off on the A6300 but since my A6000 was stolen over the weekend I am seriously thinking of buying the A6300 when I can since I have so may E-mount lenses.
+John Glue I#m sorry for your loss but who is stealing an A6000?
Hahaha idk I think they just snatched bags from my trunk, Two bags had soccer gear in them which I am sure is in the trash as it is unsellable .
The TL;DW Comparison to the other cameras are great! Liked! Can you do a comparison between the A7II and EM5 Mk2 5-axis stabilization in terms of handheld video shooting?
best tech video i have ever seen! bravo!
