    why not scrape the board with the knife?

      Because scraping the board with your knife, holding it at 90 degrees 📐, will dull the edge of the blade. 🔪 Instead you could use the back of the blade or bring the blade down as if you would do on a sharpening stone. 😉

      I use a bread divider because I have a chef knife with a strangely shaped spine (thanks a lot Emril 🤦)
