Hence why I said I *don't* do the horizontal cuts for a rough chop. Also as someone who cuts hundreds of pounds of onions for a job, it can be necessary if the onions is odly formed or a layer folds in on itself. Chefs do it because they need uniformity for restaurants because dishes need to be as close to the same as they can get.
You cut horizontally after you’ve cut vertically 3/4 of The way so you don’t hold it awkwardly like she proceeded to show us which will result in you cutting your finger or slowing down. Try doing this with 100 onions.
Her knife is probably dull hence the shakiness and pushing she was doing. I do it this way too, but I always make sure to sharpen my knife before hand and it’s so much smoother and faster! If you are clumsy don’t do this, find another way lol

You do not need to go to school to chop an onion. It's just one of the many life skills we learn as we grow. So many life lessons become second nature & this nice young lady went to some school that taught her to chop an onion. I think she was too nervous & stressed out.
Well your dad taught you wrong cause there's no point in cutting horizontally. The layers do it for you. Next time, try cutting longitudinally then laterally. Real time saver

@@jh2471 if you knew how an onion was laid out, you would know you do not have to cut it horizontally. the onion already has layers so it was pointless for her to cut it horizontally. she cut of a lot of the top part secondly. and lastly her diced onion was really thick. to cut an onion, you slice (not chop, by chopping it causes the juices to get near/or in your eyes.) from the hairy part (don’t slice the actual hairy part but pretty close to it. cut it vertically in thin slices, there are also lines in the onion that you can follow but cut those in the middle along with the lines. (since they tend to be thicker) then rotate the onion and slice it once again and now it’s diced. she did unnecessary steps and did it wrong.

Dude, I went to culinary school. We use the “claw” hand position, and your knife handling needs some work. If you are a beginner cut the onion in half then the half’s in half and you can easily access both sides of the onion to make the cuts straight down instead of cutting toward yourself. Smh

Well judging by the redness of their eyes she might be wearing contacts, that's the only truly way to not get watery eyes also due to the small amount of wetness the cutting board has the knife is probably very sharp and bc of the "small" sized (I believe they are medium tho) onion sizes she isn't breaking too much "watery inducing liquid" (basically sulfuric acid)

Well I had 3 lessons each 45 min so 45x3 of cooking class on a Wednesday from 10am until lunch time and had lunch together with the other students. We had 4 small kitchen, in each kitchen would be a group of 3 to 4 students and each student had a task to do. That’s how we learned basic cooking knowledge from 7th till 9th grade. It was one of my favorite periods/lesson in school.
We were taught in culinary school to first remove the onion peel with a paring knife. The thin blade allows you to get under the peels. If you cut straight through it you can cut dirt into the onion.

It's not necessary at all. The layers do a good job on their own. Just cut your longitudinal slices closer together
