Half time shuffle is a popular drum groove that can be used in a variety of styles. The basic pattern is very simple, but it can be varied to create different feels. Half time shuffle can be played with any two hands, but it is usually played with the right hand on the hi-hat and the left hand on the snare. The feet can be used to keep time or to add extra color. Half time shuffle is a great groove for beginners to learn because it is easy to play and sounds good with almost any style of music. With a little practice, half time shuffle can become a powerful tool in your drumming arsenal.
In this video I show you some really cool techniques and patterns that will help you with creating amazing drum grooves. You can hear these grooves in songs by Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Toto played by iconic drummers such as, Bernard Purdie, John Bonham, Jeff Porcaro and others.

Great vid Guy! A smooth shuffle is so sweeet!
That's cool having you show all these other drummers, even though I'm not a musician I'd have to say you're pretty damn good drum of yourself bro I think you got your shit together right on, keep on rocking bud, I watch the new video every time it comes out right on, I've always loved the drums I was born with hyperactivity and my mom used to let me bang on the pots and pans in the kitchen when I was a little kid to keep me cool down I just can't believe I never got into a band oh well.
Dude you are so smooth , I am so glad to have met you and the opportunity stand on the side and watch one of my hero's do what he loves !! I hope to see you guys again soon..

Guy,
Lifelong Zebra (and of you) fan. I talked to you at length about the Tama Rockstar Pro set I had just bought at the bar at Grantstreet Dancehall after one of the Zebra shows in 1993. Very excited to see you have a UA-cam channel and will definitely follow it.
Thanks Terry…glad you found me!!!
you nailed it. excellent video!
keep it simple !!
Awesome. I've been struggling with the HTS. Great explanation and visual examples. Cheers Mate
Glad it helped!
That was great Guy, Thank you
Hey Ralph glad you liked it…
What you say is all true,as far as I know, and it's fun to listen to you talking, but a halftime Shuffle has to be played in a different way,is has to be light, cool, easy, maybe quiter to,it has to have air, space to breaf and so on.look at Bernhard Purdie ,how he smiles and enjoy's his own playing,in my understanding of this groove, this is the way to go,this is the message. It's not a Rock beat,it not for heavy playing, the message is not - i want !!! -,the message is - i'm ready...to let it happen -. I like this goove a lot,and that's my thoughts about it.Thanks !
Love this. I must have been asleep at the wheel on Zebra. I've heard some of your songs, but for some reason was not familiar with the band. I love power trios and played in a few, so I can't understand how I missed you guys. I was always in to FM, Rush, Triumph, etc. At any rate, love your channel, love your playing , love your analysis of some of the other greats, and if you're ever in the Bluegrass state, holler at me and I'll buy you some barbecue and we'll talk drums a bit. I may hit you up for some lessons as well. My retirement plan is to go out playing!
Very nice. You removed the mystery that seems to confuse so many players.
Many music listeners are unaware that the drummer on 'Hang On Sloopy', the mid-60s hit by the McCoys is Bernard Purdie. Guitarist/singer Rick Derringer (who also appeared on a couple Steely Dan tracks) was flown to New York City for the session.
When I first saw Bernard play it was at the Modern Drummer Festival. All the other players had big kits and were blowing chops. By contrast, Purdie simply played various grooves with open fills; there was nothing fancy or flash. And he played at a volume that would be perfect for a band in a hotel bar. My initial response was one of disappointment. I mean, where are all the chops and power?
What I realised at the end of his set was that the power was in the groove, its feel and simplicity, not the volume or fancy stuff every one else was impressing us with.
A great 1/2 time shuffle to check out is Paul DeLong on Kim Mitchell's 'All We Are', a classic from the former guitarist/singer of Max Webster, who were both label and tour mates for RUSH.
This was good! Thank you Guy ! You play so good , plus- your explanation was awesome! Purdie is one of my all time favorites.. home at last , so much going on in that one .. what a feel… thx again
Mr.Tom
The first groove sounded like "Fool in the Rain".
Great insights and very interesting! Keep the vids coming, bro!
