  • Addictive Drums 2 is, in my opinion, one of the best and most complete drum software studio packages available today, at any price. XLN audio have painstakingly recorded samples from the most incredible kits in the best recording studios in the world with top session drummers and recording engineers.
    Below are some interesting links to some short documentary ‘making of’ type videos that XLN Audio filmed while recording some session samples. I’ve also put in a few links to some of the ADpaks that were recorded in two top locations. Of course, there are many other ADpaks that I have not listed below, such as: Black Velvet, Session Percussion, Indie, Metal, Funk, Modern Jazz Sticks, Retroplex, Blue Oyster, Black Oyster, Studio Pro, Studio Rock, and more. Check out Addictive Drums website and their UA-cam channel for more info.

    How to purchase Addictive Drums:
    To purchase Addictive Drums 2 software you need to get one of the AD2 Collections, which is a bundle of content that includes AD2 itself: www.xlnaudio.com/products/add...
    You can't purchased single ADpaks or MIDIpaks if you don't already own content for AD2.
    There are two kinds of Collections, first you have the Custom types, which let you select the content for yourself, the Custom Collection come in different sizes, the smallest being the just the "Custom" consisting of 3 ADpaks (drum kits) 3 MIDIpaks (MIDI libraries) and 3 kit piece paks (single kit pieces).
    Then you have the curated Collections which consists of 2 ADpaks (drum kits) and 2 MIDIpaks (MIDI libraries) that are pre-selected to suit a specific genre or style.
    Then there is also the Complete Collection which contains all content for AD2.

    I got AD2 plus 3 kit packs of my choice bundled free with Cakewalk Sonar back in 2015. Immediately fell in love with it. XLN routinely has 50% off sales so I've purchased a number of additional kit packs over the years and their addictive keys app as well. I love having a library of random kit pieces I can mix and match to create whatever I want and their samples are just glorious.

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven  Рік тому

      Hi Sandy and thank you. I assume you mean the physical kit that I'm playing rather than the AD2 software kit? If so, I'm not using a full size drum kit I'm using a Yamaha DTX M12, which you can see 59 min 44 seconds in. This Yamaha cost around £399, but it is quite old now and in need of serious updating from Yamaha, which they have no intention of doing. It has 12 pads that you can hit. Personally, I think the Alesis Strike MultiPad at £529 is much better, but the Alesis is really unreliable and goes wrong all the time so I would not bother with that one either. Course, Roland have just brought out their new ROLAND SPD-SX-PRO, which is amazing, but at £840 it is typical stupid 'Roland' money and I would not buy it on price alone. But if you are feeling rich, the Roland is superb. It's basically the Alesis, but reliable. I felt the previous Roland was not built that well, cheap plastic feeling, and I have not physically seen the new Roland to know how good, or bad, it is built.
      Ideally an electronic drum kit with kick drum, snare, three toms and a hi-hat, two crash cymbals and a ride would be ideal. I have a Roland TD-15 that I have heavily upgraded now. You can buy (used on eBay) budget kits like the Alesis nitro mesh kit, which is only £365 new, they go used for about £195. Or Yamaha do the DTX Xplorer budget kits used on eBay for about £400. These will be better and as they are only triggering the kits in Addictive Drums they are fine. Alternatively, you can just click the beats in with the mouse and not have a kit at all, or use one of the 'finger pad' USB things such as the AKAI PROFESSIONAL MPD218 USB MIDI PAD CONTROLLER for £80 brand new.
      Hope this helps and I hope I understood your question, if not, shout me again.

Looks like it will be a great match with the Arturia software, feels like I'm on a roll LoL(or is it just the algorithm feeding my prejudices, who knows?). Anyway, I will revisit my AD software and more in depth this time.

      Well, if it is the algorithms feeding you prejudices, they nailed it! ;) I love AD2 and use it a lot, I even plug my Roland TD-17 full size drum kit into it as the AD2 sounds are a country mile better than the 'modelled' sounds in my Roland TD-17 module. You can use AD2 with the touch finger pads on the Arturia so you'll be tapping out amazing sounding drum beats in no time ;)

    I agree. I use for jazz, latin rhythms, hip hop and techno.
    Boutique mallets adpack seems underrated. Soul is a must. So are jazz sticks and brushes if you play jazz.

But the Pop pack, if you link at the link at the end of this, seems to have 16 different presets from 'Acoustic Pop' to 'Clean Trump' (see screen grab half way down page on link at end of this), but within each one there are more parameters for fine-tuning the adjustments too. www.xlnaudio.com/products/addictive_drums_2/adpak/united_pop

    Hi Nigel, congratulations on the video.
    But there is one thing that I have never understood if it is possible to do with Addictive drums.
    If I customize a drumset with all levels in the mixer because they are the levels I always want to use, how can I change the drumset while keeping these levels unchanged?
    Every time I change the drumset, Addictive resets the sliders for me and I have to redo the configuration.
    Something like import the drumset without changing the configuration.
    For example Superior Drummer allows this.
    Do you have any ideas about it?

    • @tecraven

      The kits and individual percussion pieces are already mixed and levelled, you just go in and tweak them and adjust them if you want. Or you can clear all the presets and create your own settings - your choice. But yes, they are all mixed and levelled with all the appropriate amounts of compression and EQ etc already applied, so you can either clear them and do your own thing or fine-tune what is already there, or, like me, just leave it as it is.

      @@MrJamesDavidLarson Don't forget, if you use the 'Midi Packs' that AD do do not use any sort of 'humanise' feel on them or start moving the quantize around to get a 'human' feel. The reason, these midi packs were laid down by a professional session drummer on a top of the range Roland V-drums electronic drum kit so the human feel is there already and if you drag and drop an AD Midi Pack onto the timeline, double-click it and zoom in you'll see that the midi beats are not perfectly lined up with the grid, they are ever so slightly off, because a 'human' actually played in these songs, beats, phrases etc. On the other hand if you want it to sound like a drum machine simply select them all and quantize them in 100 percent ;)

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven  Рік тому +1

      Josh. Not sure about SP3 as I've never used it, but I've heard great things about it. One thing I do know about SD3 is that it requires 236 GB of space just for the samples so it's a beast of a thing to have on your hard drive. I have seen loads of tutorials on it and I've also heard from others that it is much harder to get your head around and use compared to AD2.
      Superior Drummer 2 came out in 2005 while Superior Drummer 3 came out September 2017 so is now going to be six years old in September 2023.
      Addictive Drums 1 came out in 2006 while Addictive Drums 2 was released in 2014 so it is now nine years old for version 2.
      Both SD and AD are of similar age with similar timings for next version from what I can gather.
      For me, AD does look like its interface needs to be brought up-to-date as that gold Marantz 80s Hi-Fi look just does not look that good anymore. I also think AD could bring more to the table along with updating the GUI. I nice big overhaul and lots of new features and sounds would be good in AD3 but with the bonkers way this world is at the moment who knows when, or if, version 3 of Addictive Drums will come out.
      For me personally AD2 does everything I need it to, and more and it has every possible instrument I could ever want - though this might change in the future, but for now it is fine and does way more than I need it to.
      Is there a demo of SP3?
      I have been in touch with my contact at SP3 about doing a review and evaluation on SP3, but waiting to hear back from them.

    • @Subjective_JoshNelson
      @Subjective_JoshNelson Рік тому

      @@tecraven I agree with all of your above (nice articulation on the dated AD2 GUI's look!).
      I went with AD2 because the SD3 learning curve was too daunting and the AD2 price point on VST reselling sites' is great. I have 6 full AD/Midi/Kit packs, with legit XLN licenses re-assigned to me from XLN, for $200! I'm sure learning AD2 will get me where I want to go...however, I've already encountered the aforementioned issue with percussion instruments (Congas). I'll see what's in store for me instrumental wise, as I install my remaining 4 AD packs. I'm going slow in the snow on this. Your vid gave me a great, functional beginning!
      Now I'm looking at how to input/set up a multi-instrument output / environment with one drum on one track in Ableton Live 11. It's not as automatic as in Logic. I have no idea if this is even necessary, but am going to set it up and template it, nonetheless as my SOP.
      Regarding an SD3 demo. All I see is an "audio demo", I could not find a demo for the downloading of the environment allowing a full demo play-around... Anyone, please correct me if I have this wrong.
      Lastly, one can stage the amount of instruments downloaded in SD3 by sensible categories Toontrack provies, hence one does not need 240gb-ish storage, simply for housing the full package in starting out.
      XLM's XO's GUI design language is probably a foreshadow for the look of an AD3, if there ever is one. Most of XLN's newer plug-ins have a great modern look. They're just way to advanced and automated for me.
      I'm learning how to make music circa' '70s, 80s even... You know, songs that have verses, chorus' and bridges'; harmonic structure with interesting chord progressions; killer basslines and drum rhythms...And, lyrics that have something to say. The tic tok modern music business be damned and kindly rest where it may, lol. ❤

    I have many of the AD drum kits and midi packs. But with the new EZ Drummer 3 features i am thinking of buying it now. The new band mate feature seems to be fantastic i can see using that all the time and the song building area to create a full song drum track and the much better drum edit interface to create a custom beat in that timeline. .. What i would like to know is if EZ 3 can somehow playback the AD drum kits i have so i can use all my AD kits and sounds. Build the song in EZ3 starting with band mate and then into teh song maker but use my AD kits to play it so i do not have to pay for all the extra EZ packs to get more kits i all ready have from AD. Maybe EZ can export the full song drum track as a midi that AD can then play back. Maybe some custom mapping to match them up.. What do you think?. After watching the video you had me looking up drum pads but that would cost to much for me to build a full kit and i do not have teh space. I think i would like doing this in the EZ 3 edit interface building beats and the full songs drum parts. I hope we see a AD3 soon with features like this in it but its been many years now and nothign new.

But, to be honest, being a drummer and familiar with AD2 and Superior Drummer I can't see why XLN Audio would bring out AD3 as AD2 has the best samples in the world, the interface works and is clean and simple and it does not crash and thus, as the saying goes, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. They won't be able to improve on the samples as they are perfection as it is.

All this makes finding a beat for a lick faster and the song builder to me seems like a fantastic feature. I am going to buy it. Some other users say i can export the midi out and AD should be able to that play it using AD sounds i have. So i will buy the two pack deal they have going right now to get started. I have both and ad2 is vastly better than ezdrummer. The lack of ability to tweak the drum sounds is a real deal killer for me. The drum sounds in ezdrummer are all dry and unprocessed - this maybe a bonus for you, but for me it just killed it. So with ezdrummer you are left with a very limited drum kit, with dry unprocessed sounds and no way to tweak them in software. It just made the kits sound very artificial and it slows down the creative process.
      You can definitely get better midi patterns with ezdrummer, and there are many more ways to tweak the midi patterns. But the sound just isn't anywhere near as good as ad2.

    I know this is kind of an old vid, and not sure if you answer questions, but I was wondering... is there a simple way to simulate 2 sticks hitting the same drum at around the same time like a real drummer would do it? For example, I want to create a build up by using the kick and the low floor tom together with every 8th note. The problem is that I can't draw the midi in such a way that the floor tom is triggered at the same time with 2 sticks (i.e. two separate midi notes that are offset a little in both start time and velocity). The problem is that one note cancels the other note out, so it doesn't sound natural. I know I could just add the same tom to a Flexi slot, but then I'd need to add another track (using multi out). Do you know of a way to do this in midi without having to add a whole separate track with the same drum?

    • @tecraven
      @tecraven  Місяць тому

      Yes, there are several ways to do this, too many to explain, but there is a simple way also. In the DAW for example, just play the parts in with a midi pad and it will detect close double-hits or if you are writing midi notes, simply add another track for more snare hits directly, slightly off, the original snare hit, or even put them within the same track.

      Desafortunadamente, su batería es sólo una batería económica y es súper, es lo que se conoce como Hot-Spotting y no se puede hacer nada al respecto. Incluso los kits más caros de Roland y Yamaha pueden tener tendencia a sonar ruidosos en el centro de la caja cuando se golpea directamente sobre el sensor, pero con kits más caros se pueden personalizar en el módulo, pero Addictive Drums no tiene manera. de poder hacer este ajuste ya que el problema es el kit Alesis y el módulo Alesis no tiene forma de corregirlo.

    This is great, my friend. Just got AD2 and have no idea how to use it. Looking forward to drilling into this (I'm minute 08:53). Also in one of your other videos, you had a nice computer keyboard riser, not listed in your studio gear list. I have scoured the internet and cannot find a "computer keyboard riser" like yours. So, I'm using a laptop riser with similar form factor, but it has a much larger footprint. Can you link me to your "computer keyboard" riser? Thanks!

      Thanks, Josh. It's actually a Laptop stand made by a company called Awavo. I bought mine on Amazon but the front/top support arms were too long and had bits that curled up at the front (to stop laptop falling forward) so I cut them off with a hacksaw (it's only light alloy) to fit the depth of my Apple keyboard. The rubber parts on top of the stand grip the bottom of the keyboard so it does not slip. I can't find the Awavo one anymore, but it was probably re-badged and made by somebody else anyway as I've seen three different makes that are all identical apart from a different name stuck on it.
      This one is made by BoYata, but looks like a re-brand of the identical one I have, available in different finishes too: amzn.to/2Zlnh8c

I started out recording my drum takes with SD2, then SD3, but they both had their downfalls for what I was trying to deliver. Once I got AD2 onto my setup, my drum takes started sounding seamless. While there I tried the Roland digital hi-hats but at £675 for what I consider to be two plastic frisbees with a sensor inside (all made in Indonesia) I think it is a major rip off. I honestly can't see how the Roland VH-14D can cost more than £20 in parts and manufacturing. If Roland sold the VH-14D for £195 they would still be making a killing. No double that Roland V-drum kits, from the TD-27 upwards, the digital snare, hats and ride, are a world class rip off, I mean you can buy a decent Yamaha or Sonor acoustic kit with decent Zildjian or Sabian cymbals for less.
      I had to resist buying new toys while I was down there so I made for a fast exit with just the Tama Speed Cobra 2-legged hi-hat stand for £125 ;)
      I've been known to buy used stuff via auction (that I win) and sell it a month later to get my money back. I figured whatever I won it for it should sell for via auction again a month later. Good way to try bits of stuff out and you get to try it for as long as you want before re-listing it on FleaBay ;)
      Still trying to work something out regarding Superior Drummer and doing a review and evaluation on it, but not heard from my man there yet.

At the top left of the Map Window under the Map Preset click the drop-down menu (AD2 Standard should be set by default) and then choose whatever drum kit you are using there. Great vid Raven : ) They should have hired you at XLN as your vid is much more detailed then theirs. Keep up the great help.

      Haha, thanks for that, Bubba. I'm not affiliated with XLN at all, but I felt compelled to put in the history lesson about them and that other stuff at the beginning just to drive home the fact that this is a professional tool. Somebody else complained about this, suggesting the I'd created a commercial for XLN, but I disagree with him. But I guess we live in a cynical world ;) Thanks again, Bubba.

      @@tecraven Hi Raven. Thanks for all the kind replies : ). Can you possibly direct me to an in depth tutorial on the Mapping section in Addictive ?

      @@bubbanose9580 These two should do it. They were made by XLN audio. The first one sums it up quickly and this is about as complex as it gets. It really is as easy as plugging your electronic kit into it and opening the mapping page, click learn for any given kit piece, hit that kit piece with stick, and click save. That’s it.
