I just installed a 13" UTG Pro 4/13 Super Slim Free Float Handguard on my newest AR build; my first 300 AAC Blackout rifle. I have to say, this thing looks great! It is a light-weight, but study handguard that installed flawlessly on my stripped Aero Precision upper. My previous build sported a quad-rail which is nice, but honestly, is more rail than I need. This UTG Super Slim gives me the option of adding small rail sections where I need them, but otherwise it is left clean and uncluttered. This video made the installation process a breeze! Keep up the good work!
ABQSentinel, Thank you for sharing your experience with us. We're glad to hear you like the UTG Pro Super Slim rail! The full quad rails are nice, but you're right they're more than a lot of us need and also a lot of extra weight. The Super Slim seems to better suit your needs. Thanks you for your support and Happy Holidays!
Once I got my UTG slim hand rail installed, just what I was looking for. Easy to install, plain easy to follow instructions. Top quality, for a reasonable price.
Got mine and it installed simply and perfectly. Love the light weight, the numerous rail install locations, it's slim design and it fits perfectly over the low pro gas block. Pretty funny how easy you make it seem to remove those stupid pins on the A2 front site. I'm here to tell you there was nothing simple about getting those pins out. LOL. I was more than happy to toss that thing right in the trash. Everything else regarding the rail was a piece of cake. Thanks for a great and affordable rail system.
T Jones Thank You for Your Support and Feedback! Yes the pins holding the gas block seem like they are permanent sometimes and can be very difficult to get off.
Just finished my install of the UTG Super Slim 15" free float handguard. Glad I watched this video before tackling this project. All went well, had to add a single shim to get everything lined up just right on the PSA rifle-length upper. Final torque on the barrel nut was 52 ft\lbs. It took longer to cut down the stock front sight than to install the handguard, but I prefer the pinned attachment on the gas block. I sure like the look and feel of this product. Off to the range tomorrow to sight-in this new rig (also installed a Vortex SPARC).
General knowledge: That little wrench on the torque wrench should be put on at a 90 degree angle so you are not adding any length between the torque wrench pivot and the work ( barrel nut) as torque is measured in "foot lbs" not: (14 inch) pounds. You are applying more than the measured torque like that.
Excellent video, BUT - you have the lo-pro gas block on backwards. Every block I ever encountered has the gas hole rearward of the gas tube pin. The gas tube pin should be at the front of the block instead of the rear. Just trying to save someone some grief, later.
Nice video with clear instructions. I feel more confident about tackling this on my own. One question though. I have not been able to find the exact specs on the 13" UTG Pro Free Float Super Slim Handguard. My AR upper is equipped with a 20" barrel and a quad rail gas block at the "rifle" length. Specs list the 13" guard at 12.6", Is that the total overall length? I'm trying to determine if I can use my existing gas block or if I require a low profile model.
+John Morton Thank you for your inquiry. The overall length when installed onto your receiver is 12.5" which is different from the physical overall length of the rail itself (12.85") specifically because of the anti rotation tabs. When installed, the tabs will overlap the receiver; thus taking it out of the length equation.
How about doing a video on UTG Pro quad rail installation. Give some torque values for the barrel nut like you did in this video. The instructions that come with the rail leave alot to be desired.
Hello niuhikona, Thank you for your inquiry! Which rail specifically? Drop-in or Free Float? We just uploaded installation videos for our UTG Pro T-series Drop-in rails as well as our UTG Pro Drop-in Super Slim Rails Systems. Our UTG Pro Standard Free Float and Drop-in Rail System installation videos should be up in a couple of weeks.
+niuhikona - Yes, slightly different installation. We should have our UTG Pro Standard Free Float and Drop-in Rail System installation videos up in about a couple of weeks. Are there any questions we can answer in the mean time?
betatalk357 Yes, you are correct the rifle is a mil-spec rifle with carbine length gas system . Our Mid-length handguard was designed to allow use of the standard A2 style front sight block with a mid-length gas system.
I have seen other barrel nut installations that over-tighten and release the barrel nut three times before tightening to the final correct torque. Is there any benefit to doing so with your proprietary barrel nut?
I've read that the black color is not exactly black, but is actually a metallic-like color. So, my question is, now does this metallic-like black finish match with the AR receiver color?
+Gregory P That is not accurate, the rails are black (hard coat anodized) and will match most mil spec AR receivers, keep in mind that not all AR receivers are the same shade of black either.
+UTGLeapers Good to know because I ordered one. I saw a Shot Show video where the rep for UTG talked about the finish on the new line of products, and that the black finish was not actually black, but was some kind of metallic type finish. Thanks for responding.
+Gregory P, Thank you for your support! Yes, he was speaking about our rails with Cerakote™ finishes, which come in a variety of colors. As previously stated, our "standard color" is black (hard coat anodized).
Which low-pro gas block was used? I also have an m&p15 and would like to install this hand guard. I was considering using the Rousch rail height gas block to mount a front iron site. Any thoughts?
+asealy20 The gas block in the video is just a standard low-profile set screw gas block. Not sure what company, but they are all very similar in size. As far as the use of the Rousch rail height gas block, it really depends on your preference of mounting options. Weather you prefer the front iron sight mounted on the handguard or directly on your gas block.
betatalk357 The issue is that our proprietary barrel nut does not have the grooves of a traditional barrel nut which would be used to secure the piston spring. We will be testing the XLP system for compatibility with all our rails in the near future. Until then we suggest not making any permanent modifications to your firearm and/or rail system. We will provide periodic updates as we test our different hand guard models. Thank You for your Inquiry! Best Regards, The Leapers UTG Team
The included barrel but wrench doesn't just pop right on my torque wrench. Like the cut out square on the barrel but wrench is too big and it's not going on...Any suggestions?
Hello ZzBiohazzardzZ, The cutout on the barrel nut wrench is for a 1/2" socket head. We recommend using and adaptor (from - the size of your current torque wrench (probably 3/8") - (to 1/2"). This should allow you to properly torque the barrel nut. We hope this helps, let us know if you have any other questions. Best Regards, The Leapers/ UTG Team
UTGLeapers Haha, yea I figured that out and just bought a 1/2 torque wrench from sears before seeing this reply. Thanks for the help though, I can't wait to put it on.
Is there any difference between the needed torque for the AR15 and the AR10 / LR-308 models? I do have the MTU020SSB and the manual says 35-50 ft-lb. What I heard from many sources is that the .308 requires more torque on the barrel nut than the .223
+Georg Fabricius As stated in the manual we recommend a 35 ft-lb torque value for both the .308 and .223/5.56 variants of the super slim rail. This recommended torque value along with other locking features of the handguard (locking ring / locking screws and anti-rotation tabs) will provide a rock solid lock-up on the receiver. That being said you may torque the barrel nut up to 50 ft-lb based on your preference as stated in the manual.
Question for UTG do you sell these barrel nuts separate? I have a few uppers and barrels and would like the option to swap the two hand guards I have on several uppers without having to purchase a hand guard for each one ?
Hello S76GUY, we don't usually, but we'll see what we can do. I've not been able to get the slots to line up with the bottom holes. I've gone way over 60 ft lbs (didn't see this video before now, and MilSpec is around 80ft lbs). Any ideas what's up?
