I went with Z1 900 , welded the crank and put an OEM 1000 cc top end , worked the transmission with under cut gears , added a winding tray and engine transmission waste gate , top end with heavy duty valve springs & titanium retainers topped of with a stage one cam , the stock carb was replaced with the ZI R accelerator pump and the Z 1 air box with K & N filter. The pipe was a four into one designed specifically fro drag racing , I can’t for the life of me remember the brand but it was the hot ticket ! Extremely reliable and it could be hammered without any issues ! Great memories !

Cool, i am 67 and early 20's i had a 74 Z-1, Wiseco 1015 with the cylinder decked to the circumference of the piston, megacycle 417 lift cams with buckets, 29 smooth bores, Manley SS pro-flo valves, head decked about 030, gate in the oil pan to keep the oil in the front, good clutch springs, 1000 transmission, electronic ignition, crank pins welded, etc. a street bike but ran much stronger than a stock one, just had to wait for those long duration cams to kick in which was about 5000 but lets be REALISTIC it was a mid-high 12 second at about 103-105 mph bike stock with a pipe and a 14 tooth front sprocket, any modern 600 would DESTROY it but those old bikes were COMFORTABLE, not sleeping on the tank like a ZX-10. Considering the 'stock' performance those guys finding some SERIOUS power somewhere, even with a 1200 CC kit i think still be somewhere in the 11's without a slick and a good swingarm, a Z-1 now a 20-25 grand$$$$$$$$$$$$$ bike STOCK condition

My first Street bike was 1978 KZ650C2 bought it in 1983 when i was 14.. had a hole in #3 piston.. Found the valve in the oil pan.. Put a used 718 big bore kit and stage 3 cams.. ended up being super fast.. used to street race and race it at Houston Raceway Park in Baytown TX.

Have a 1974 Kawasaki Z1-900 that was a collaboration of craftsmanship between Bob Moshinskie, Paul Gast, and Ron Gardner! It's a Vance&Hines theme bike that has a 1197cc engine, with a Mk2 cylinder that has over size valves, street strip port, and special ground cams. 34mm flat slides. Bottom end is bullet proof with Ron Gardner doing his magic on. Sports a 5 1/2" rear wheel and 180 Avon cobra tire. 4-6" over extended swing arm, period correct. Suspension is nothing special, just a good set of rear shocks, preload and dampning. Front has set of beefy springs to prevent bottoming out. Stock front brake, good pads, stainless brake line. Has two step, shift minder, and it tachs out at 10,200 vs. the 8,200 stock. Been on a dyno and produced 127hp and 74ft pounds of torque. Not bad?

@@cycledrag Once I had become aware of the company Sanctuary, I would do a chassis similar to their design. Ohlins suspension front and rear, stabilize the frame. As for and engine? I think I'd like to see if I could incorporate a turbo to a Ward Vortex 2 head? Can you imagine the cfm numbers flowing through something like a set up? I'm not sure if it could be done? I do know I'd like to have the engine powder coated for durability. And to top off the look, a beautiful hand bent, tig welded exhaust.

After many years in the garage, I'm just getting my old 80 KZ1000 back together with my Dad's help. He's porting it and we have a 1075 cylinder and pistons, cams, and we are hunting down a set of smoothbores. Man I can't wait to hear it growl again. Rode the wheels off of it when I was younger. Hopefully someday I can get it looking as purty as yours. Sweet bike you have there.

Had a Z1R and a KZ1000 when I was stationed in Alaska. The KZ was a sweet comfortable ride, fully dressed. The Z1R was just downright scary. It seemed like the motor was just too much for the frame. Lots of flex at speed. When I left Alaska for Hawaii, sold the Z1R and shipped the KZ to Honolulu. Sure do miss that bike.

I owned a low miles ‘77 jetted, air cleaners and a pipe throughout the nineties and early Y2K’s. Rode it and bracket raced it for years. With stock gearing and tire size it’d run consistent 13.0’s @113 winding it out through the lights in third gear to 9500. The most comfortable bike and it NEVER broke. In 2016 I had the pleasure to build a stock appearing ‘79 with 1105cc 12.5 Weisco’s, Webcam, big valves, carbs and porting for a customer. I never got to take that one to the track but, on the street it definitely needed more tire!

@@cycledrag The guy that sold me the bike said that it was. But I spoke to a collector. That it was just a kz 900. Due to the manufacturer date of assembly. Didn't really matter to me to be honest. I love the bike either way. It was mildly built, and set up for the 1/8 mi. Was a ton of fun to ride.

    • @timryerson6733

The big valve polyspherical Unitrak GPz Cylinder "bathtub" head is a slight advantage over the J hemi head. Both are big improvements over the original Z/KZ pre 81 head. But if you are serious about racing an eight valve KZ variant - 1500+ cc and the Vortex II.
