  • How to make it work and fix the problem. The newer Yamaha OEM Multi-Function Digital \Tachometer installing and not matching the plug and play wiring from older 2 stroke outboard motor wiring configuration. Apparently this is commend when there's no information or description from a 1st Gen to a 2nd Gen Yamaha Tach. So if you are looking to replace your wore out Tachometer from an older 2 stroke motors but not knowingly you'll end up buying a 2nd Gen Yamaha Tach, the plug and play will not match at all. See how we corrected the problem.

      Jose Rosario, brother thank you for your support and kind words. Im glad that this video helped out.. I thought I was the only one that was having this problem. My final conclusion which I thought of this after making the video live is that since the newer 4 stroke came to light, the wiring were different for the 4 stroke motors. So those with older 2 stroke out boards, that was the wiring configuration. So to be able to kill two birds with one stone they created an adapter.. But of course the adapter is and extra $100s more.. But the kicker is that even with the available adaptor, it really doesn't tell you that an adapter is needed for the newer tach.. I bought the adapter in hopes that was the ticket. Well thank God that it was.. All connected well and it's working.. Loll.. It just cost more than the original tach because of that one little missing link known as the adapter. Loll.. Jose, once again thank you for your support and watching our video. Blessings my friend.

    Did you set the D I P switches the same as the old switches? I had to replace mine and having issues with a few things, tilt and trim gauge being one of them.

    Can this be used to adapt an old motor to Yamaha command link and then to NMEA 2000?

      Hello Erika. Thank you for your comment and supporting our channel. My outboard is a 2005 Yamaha 60 2 stroke. I think with the newer 4 strokes the wiring system on the gen2 Yamaha tach is to cater to those outboards. But no information on adaptors for newer tachs. Loll. We found out the hard way.. Even when we ordered the adaptor we were not sure.. And the only thing that made us search deeper was because the seller of the tach was not accepting any returns. So we bit the bullet and gave it a whirl. Our next step was to look for our original tach by the box of plug connectors of the gen 1 tach wiring... Never knew that there was 2 different Yamaha tachs..loll.. Thank you so much for watching. Stay safe.

    Congrats for your success, I'm in this situation right now with my even older 1987 Yamaha 70hp etlh Tachometer. Yamaha sent me what they said I needed to replace it's original Tack/with oil (Pro Tachometer Assembly With oil 6Y5-83540-05-00) Not even Close. Old has round connector/new square, Old has Power going to warning lights/New appears to have Ground return coming from warning lights, New appears to be powering into (Yellow,12v after ignition on.) & with Tach sender wire & Ground Wire, Old does not. Can not find original Tach part# anywhere I even have the manual that came with it new. (NS 23 C 6) is a sticker on it.
    I have been looking for Days now
    I would be for ever grateful if you could point me in the direction as to where you found this adapter?

      Hey there, thank you for your comment I'm sorry to hear that.. I think is the newer tach are designed to be installed with the 4stroke motors and the adapter was created to still install on a 2stroke motor. If I'm not mistaken my wife found it on Amazon.. Just type the product number 6y5-85335-10 on Google search and add Yamaha adapter and it would lead you to sellers of the products. Hope this helps. Good luck with everything..

    Thanks for the great info on your channel

      Hello Seatrout King. Unfortunately yes, you will have to get an adapter for it. Same problem I had.. Old tach had two box connectors and new had one.. I attempted to see what will happen if just that on box connector was connected. No dice, I was not happy for receiving the wrong tach, so I thought. There is no discription or anything stating that newer tachs when replacing an older unit will need an adaptor.. we kinda had to figure thingout on our own because very little to no information on this.. so I'm thinking Yamaha has ungraded their tach to acommidate both the older 2stroke motor and the newer 4 stroke. But yes if you have an older 2stroke with original tach, likely you will need the adaptor.. the kicker is that the adaptor is 100 dollars. Go figure, but it will save fustrating and the easy plug and play feature with get your new tach working in no time.. hope this helps. Thank you for your comment and support.

    What if my older 97 Bass tracker didn't have one but it had a Yamaha motor I only went from a two-stroke to a four-stroke 97 Yamaha the plug is the same for the throttle however does the wiring that comes originally with that throttle can I just buy the new tach?

      Yes you can, just make sure that the plug and play connectors match. If they don't you can always get the aptapter wires for it. Thanks for the comment.

      Hey brother how are you. My Tach finally couldn't be read. went on line and found the newer tach. It says it will work on my 2 stroke. But when the component arrives and we finally pulled out the old tach, the plug and play does not match. many website will not tell you that there's an adapter for the 2stroke and 4stroke Tach. It matched up great. I believe only a few wires didn't need to be connected. I will ask Ozzy, I was behind the camera.. I will fill you in as soon as I find out.. I hope all is well. Thanks

      Hello ClownFishReef. Thank you so much for the kind words and tunning in to our channel. I completely understand. I too try to avoid E-Bay as much as I can. My expiriance reasoning is you have to really check were the product is coming from. Many products are sold from overseas but fail to add that information at times and when finally placed an order it's giving you a 2 or 3 weeks time of delivery. I've waited as long as a month to receive my order. But I do believe I've ordered the Gen 2 Tac from eBay. I don't know why there's no information about both Tach being different. Or really no info on the adapter needed if you end up buying the Gen 2.. This is what we went through, Went to the trouble of installing the Tach just to find out it didn't match and it wasn't going to work with my existing wiring. My wife found what could possible be the adapter for that Tach. We try to contact the seller and asking if this unit that was purchased needed an adapter, but no reply back. So we bought the $100 adapter hoping that it was what we thought it was to finally make it all work and be done with it. My guess is when 4strokes became popular and 2strokes were being banned in some counties the 2nd Gen Yamaha Tach was created to work on both older and newer outboard motors. Try to type the product number on the google search bar and see if it comes up with other seller other than eBay. The adapter is 6y5-B5335-10 the Y Tach 2nd Gen is 6Y5-8350T-E0-00 TACHOMETER ASSY. I hope this helps. Good luck and let me know of your findings. Once again thank you for supporting our channel, it means the world to us. Stay safe and many blessings.

    • @2BearsOutdoors
      @2BearsOutdoors  4 роки тому

      @@clownfishreef1045 You are very welcome. That I'm not sure but the best way to check is to look at your existing tach and it's wiring. If you only see 2 plugs or box connecters then you can install that Gen2 Tach without an adapter.. if it's 4 plugs the an adapter is needed unfortunately.. If it's a 2stroke chances are the it will need the adapter. But then again I'm not sure with your motor.. blessing my friend, I hope this helps.. good luck and stay safe.

    hello friend, I have the same watch with a yamaha 90hp two-stroke engine, the temperature light flashes the same as you, is it normal for it to flash? It does it in contact and with the engine running in my case, the engine is fine, the water recirculation is fine, everything is fine, but the light is blinking, could you help me? Thank you

      Hello Jon B. I hope all is well? I just can speak from the expiriences that I had encountered my boat. The over heating I don't stress too much on my little 60hp. Most 2 stroke Yamahas has an overheating shut down. Not that I ever had that problem but this is what was told to me. Everything on the original and 2nd gen tachs is plug and play. But apparently it with not read outboard temperature. Not sure if you can splice into a wire that can be contacted to a sperate gauge. But that is way beyond my expertise. Loll.. As around but it should be an issues. Thanks
