Simply Mingus for Jazz Ensemble - Grade 4
Here's a playable yet very effective arrangement of this signature Mingus composition. The familiar bari sax riff is handled by three saxes, and there is also a substantial soli for the entire sax section.

People really out here complaining about the orchestration of the arrangement when they can just modify the tune. This is Jazz people, it doesn't have to follow a structure. This tune is quite literally "do a bunch of shit over a killer groove". This arrangement is not bad, just mod it as you see fit. Sheeeesh
You know, we are playing this version and I have never been more disappointed in my life.
You got any more room on that boat?
That's quite OKeh - you can write your own arrangement ~~~
Oh boohoo
This is a bari’s tune, give it to the bari.
It can be adapted to bariton
ask your director to let the bari play the first section solo. that's what i did
@@joshuamayo5282 yea like the first repeat section, its only bari then repeat is followed by the rest of the band
Hey Boys: This is my arrangement, not yours - and was written to be accessible to school bands of even modest level. The opening gives all the saxes an opportunity to play the signature riff - in case Ronnie Cuber isn't in your sax section. There's nothing to stop a band director from asking the altos & tenors to lay-out in the beginning - if (s)he is lucky to have a good baritone saxist. It's a gateway chart to lead developing musicians to more of Mingus' music. I even wrote a chart on this for string quartet - what do you think about that? If you want to hear the original, play the Mingus recording - he only did it once. In a letter or an article, I recall that Mingus wanted to have two baritone saxophonists in his band - because he had tried to hire Harry Carney, but Duke paid Carney $1K NOT to do the Mingus session (that's 1959 $$, by the way). The record company wouldn't budget for the additional musician. Luckily, Pepper Adams was available, because no other baritone saxist, other than Carney, had THE SOUND. Hmmm - maybe I'll arrange this for flute quartet - and have one of them doubling on piccolo to play the opening theme ~~~~ If only Jerome Richardson were still with us -
Sorry - you got it wrong: I was giving you feed-back.
Andrew Homzy is there a full recording of this song? I’m trying to listen to the soli section
@@cubbyyy Unfortunately, there is not a full recording by a pro band. Try some of these school band recordings: ua-cam.com/users/results?search_query=moanin+mingus+homzy
Tellem!!! Respect the arranger! Fantastic job boss! Btw,this music is for students Not seasoned professionals. And a wonderful introduction to these complex charts they are. Keeps Jazz alive.
yes. people dont understand that it is an "arrangement" for a reason. its trying to make one of the best songs of all time something more comprehensible for a more diverse range of musical capability . youre transforming a complex series of nuanced musical thought into something that can be performed by students
(of Music). this provides a crucial venue for students who love this song; they're able to express Mingus' genius in an educational, provocative, yet accessible, utilitarian way. Music's for everyone, of all abilities, and we need to be able to break down such complex, beautiful pieces in the name of education. lastly, i can not appreciate enough Homzy's recognition that this arrangement is geared towards adaptability. At the end of the day, if you have a great bari saxist, any band director would revert to the original solo, but in many instances this isn't the case. Let's present music in a way that can adapt to everyone's ability, and sometimes that requires a certain degree of simplification. I know arrangements like this are profoundly meaningful to student musicians, theyre able to portray Mingus' beauty, and theyre able to learn from him, and go on to become the next generation of Music revolutionaries, like Mingus and his Band did.
Jazz kids when the arrangement intended for a high school jazz band doesn’t sound exactly like Leo P’s feature from the BBC Proms 2017:
I don’t understand why this is so outrageous. The point of an arrangement is supposed to retell the song from a different perspective. Of course it’s gonna be different from the original. What’d you expect?
Because the different perspective is lame
@@greenberrypike4286 real
@@greenberrypike4286 Go transcribe the original recording then, the point of this was to let younger players enjoy this tune without having it be overly difficult. Not to suit some middle school bari sax’s ego.
@@greenberrypike4286 yall are the reason people think jazz is for cranky old people
Give the bariton sax the solo for god sake 😭
Right?!
it's already grade4, there's no way they should water it down like this
Not even the start is a bariton solo
Not a very good arrangement in my opninion
Ikr, the one song bari gets a huge solo they take it out. bari never gets anything
look how they massacred my boy
Cmon man it's meant for Bari not alto and tenor
Imagine forcing an alto to play a low Bb as perfectly as they do
I think when the alto and tenor play is just meant for if the bari player is not confident enough
Damnit andrew pay tribute to the bari sax solo
Bro everyone ain’t Ronnie cuber lmao
CubsFN this is not based on the Mingus big band recording, this is the original version arranged for youth bands
maybe its just the band but this seems to lack a lot of energy from the original ....then a tenor solo!!!!!??????
Being a tenor and Bari player I am offended by this
as weird as that sounds, I do understand
The original had a tenor solo....
@@moddim with no barisax solo...
You realize multiple people can choose to play a solo, everyone has the chords and can improvise if they want
Bruh, I thought there was gonna be low notes and high notes but nvm
I dont know what yall are on, this arrangment is awesome
1:53 trombone 1 n 2 lick
Wheres the bari?? Also it mightve been better at faster tempo. It helps really capture the chaos and complexity mingus puts into his charts.
Ppl hating on it but they gotta realize it’s legit only grade 4 it’s not some hoslinger level 6 crap ya know 😂. In smaller bands like mine you have a few excellent players and the rest are bad to decent ya know. If it weren’t for arrangements like this our jazz band would never get to play anything 😂. If it bothers you that much and it’s too simplified then make your own parts it’s jazz after all 😂
It sounds lit on 0.75 speed.
BARI WOULD HAVE BEEN WAY BETTER CHART!!!!
Idk what y'all are on. I love this arrangement
listen to the version from the blues and roots album. I think you all are trying to compare this arrangement to the wrong version (nostalgia in time square album)
Charles Guerrero either way, the bari is given no attention in this chart, despite it being a bari feature lol
The tenor should NOT have the only solo in this piece...
You guys are acting like one part ruins the whole song. I personally like how it's arranged because it sounds more melodic than the jumbled and chaotic original. Let it be known that I adore the original, but I'm taking this as a different piece entirely so I'm not looking for the original recording. I also really like the trumpets in this recording.
It’s meant to be chaotic though… That’s the point of the piece.
Muito agradável 🎷💂
I bet all of the people who are mad are the bari players who are getting jealous
Its because the tune is meant for bari, it sounds wrong and out of place on alto and tenor. The whole reason this tune is obsessive is because that low concert Db at the end of the lick is so spicy on bari.
just ... why the D nature? even in the rhythm section he wrote "b5" , what's the flat 5 of G? yep, D flat
its to add crunch

wheres the bari sax solo
Watch the original
Finally
"ugh!" "oogh" *bar chatter*
If only the bari got the solo, then the song would have layers to it like the original did since the altos and tenors could have different parts
0:56 is when the trumpet comes in
How you gonna make an arrangement of Moanin and not have a bari sax solo?
0:38
FINALLY I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Me too! :D
honestly this is fine
you can play this but just give bari the solo
that's what our band does
Same for my band
This is a bari tune, the whole idea is the low comes in, all goofy and then occasionally the full band does the lick. This is NOT it.
in this comment section: people who would die trying to play sy johnson's version
I’m a bass trombonist
Finally!
es una mierda de absoluta calidad.
Finally! A good professional Charles Mingus arrangement!
i guess you can say that
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Sussy title
NGL the triplets are really wack and kinda throw the whole riff off
OEH
Leo just makes these look like amateurs
Well, it is written for high school band programs
nope.
Cuando escucho eso solo puedo pensar en Leo P... 🤣🤣🤣🤣
F for the band's who get this version
I hate this arrangement, its just so confusing and awful to play when I have the original engraved into my memory
I’m sorry to hear that you are so restricted in your ability to understand what an arrangement is. Why don’t you write your own?
