Composed by Yoko Kanno for the Japanese anime television series Cowboy Bebop, the tune Tank! has taken on a life of its own. John Wasson's driving Latin funk version was written for his Strata Big Band and recorded on the album Chronicles. It features the quirky melody, sizzling brass punches, solo space for alto sax, and shows off every section of the band. A real screamer!

Fun fact, this is the same guy that arranged the whiplash version of Caravan, which really makes sense since you can very much hear the Seatbelts influence throughout said arrangment. Incredible work.

@@ldbonq the Strata band’s playing of Tank! is exactly the music being played in the video right now 😂 alto 1 is the one with the solo section, and you can clearly tell it’s an alto playing

yeah, i reckon this is the right way to arrange Tank. it clearly establishes it's own identity while remaining faithful to the style as well as melodic and harmonic material of the original. wasson has some good charts
as a sax player, i can approve that the sax solo is VERY difficult
I love looking at the first trumpet part and crying because of how high the notes are.

This is a sick ass arrangement of Tank dude. Absolutely loved the double time swing section. Obviously the alto solo was no Masato Honda but nonetheless was still superb.
Alto solo is better imo, more jazz language, but the ending part of the original arrangement was way better

@@stevemattero1471 no sir it was also an alto sax, Masato just had a nasty altissimo range.
@@abeahmed2581 I mean, it's basically a 12-bar blues song arranged for a jazz band in the first place, so it makes sense that the original alto solo plays more like a blues guitar solo. This is a much jazzier arrangement, so the jazzier solo fits well here.

I was expecting this to be incredibly cringy, but honestly a really killer arrangement that doesn’t lose any of the craziness of the original chart. Lead trumpet parts are pretty much all there in the same octave but just broken up in different parts of the chart. I’m not sure I’d choose to play this when the original quite frankly is easier given the length component with all of the hardest lead parts still in there, but I love it all the same.
I’ve played the original twice with two different schools, first time brought in a guest artist to play lead, and second time doubled lead with one of my students who had the needed a flats and g’s so I know this lead part fairly well.
This is a really good arrangement one of the first I’ve ever seen. I’m glad that now many more jazz bands across the world can play Tank

My friend found this pretty quickly and convinced our band director to let our jazz band play this! I'm lead trumpet on it and wow there are a lot of high notes

the only thing i can dog on, is the drum groove, it can be way more spicy than that, the recording of the drum itself might be the problem too

Honestly, pretty good but could've been better in my opinion
I think the part that really grinded my gears was right before the solo break, the horns don't end on the E7 chord, which kind of felt a little yassified to me
Although it could just be the upper register C's
