Everyone.... I know the captain from 2009 is called Brickbeard. If a dozen other people have already said it in the comments, you don't need to repeat them. What really confused me is the 2016 Brickbeard, a character who goes around attacking characters from other Lego themes of the time, and looks COMPLETELY DIFFERENT! So either there are two Brickbeards, two Redbeards, or one of each and a third guy who's some fusion of both. I just wish Lego would make up their minds, frankly. I think it's pretty clear that the 2009 character was designed to be Redbeard (seriously, look at him) and they changed the name at the last second for... some reason.
There's so many beards

I thought you were gonna upload one rewind video each 2 weeks.
Eh it’s probably just this episode
@@thedarkmasterthedarkmaster Beeeeeeaaaaarrrrds
@@AdamAdver It's been about two weeks since Chima.
LEGO pulled the same thing with "Brickster". There's "The Brickster" (crook from LEGO Island, etc.) and "Brickster" (rock monsters from Nexo Knights). Oh, and speaking of 'Captains', we shouldn't forget this fella: www.eurobricks.com/forum/index.php?/forums/topic/121133-investigation-who-is-the-captain-ironhook/
"Here's his car."
10/10 commentary
My thoughts too! After pestering Nick about Lego games I chuckled abit from him mentioning his car.
Brickbeard in Lego Racers had a card, I think that's what he was referring to.
Would comment again.
Hello
3:04 That's all he could say?
R.i.p we are slowly getting closer to the end... :(
The Lego community will never forget you!
Maybe he could still review the old Lego sets he covered.
Let's finally have serious versions of both themes he did a prank about.

The Riderman oh hey didn’t know you were here
@@darkmanstudios3828
Oh shit!
Well, to be fair, no good character in Star Wars seems to like the fact that an entire galaxy is in war.
So I think that makes it more acceptable?
I mean, it's not particularly that violent.
If there's a pirates revival I want a proper brick built kraken
It could never top the original.
There's an ideas page for that:

Just Yes
And i love to see returning ememies like Spanish and new enemies like sea monsters
Totally man!
Why can't Lego make these kinda "historic" themes anymore. I wished I was a kid when these came out.
Because childrens today dont like heroes of the past, they like heroes of the fantasy (marvel/dc, SW, Ninjago e.t.c.). everything else seems for them boring(
@@ильянвокиво yeah. Because LEGO pirates is very historically accurate and not fantasy at all
@@ильянвокиво Right because clearly there is no room for fantasy when it comes to epic pirate adventures.... I mean its not like they couldn't do a pirate theme that has crews as varied and interesting as the ones from One Piece... Where each pirate ship is it's own unique faction with it's own distinct crew and themes.... and then throw in a neutral/good guy faction... Some ideas for factions that would work with a pirate theme
Metalbeard: Give him an updated Sea Cow set, and a crew of steampunk pirates... Crew could include a steampunk robot pirate, a first mate that has the cyborg arm from the Monster Hunter line with swap-able hands, a guy with a nice bushy mustache and of course one pirate wearing a random bowler hat. Could also give him a cool steampunk themed dock to unload his loot at that not only has a crane but also a place for Metalbeard to sit, and a conveyor belt to scoot loot into his lair, perhaps a couple army builder kits that have smaller paddle-wheel boats to support his flagship...
Brickbeard/redbeard: Your classic pirate faction lead by a classic pirate that thinks that pirate should just be pirates and is a stickler for tradition... (Which is why he makes anyone who suggests that maybe upgrading the ship to an ironclad walk the plank.) His ship is more or less just like the classic pirate ships of old, and his base is of course a classic pirate base built into a skull shaped island....
Monkeybeard: More of a castaway than a proper pirate but regardless he still managed to cobble together something resembling a flagship from the shipwreck that marooned him on a tropical island full of monkeys... (His ship doesn't have a traditional mast or sails, but rather he improvised using palm trees and vines to create something that kind of looks like a mast if you squint real hard...) Needless to say he filled out his entire crew with monkeys... (Don't expect to find gold or jewels in his treasure chests as a result, instead he treasures banana's cherries, and apples and tends to hoard them....) Natually instead of cannons he uses a catapult to fling coconuts(and the new octopus from the Lego Friends line) at his enemies... (Overall his theme has a real Swiss Family Robinson feel to it and I guess he would be a neutral faction if not for the fact that he raids other ships for their bannanas)
Captain Squidbeard: Actually a Space Alien turned pirate who's main goal is to repair his tech so he can get back to space... His crew consisting mostly of alien robots that have been (badly) disguised as pirates, and his first mate is another alien who could almost pass for human if not for the tentacles sh has for legs.. his main flag ship looks like someone tried to build a proper pirate ship out of half of a broken alien space ship... His docks/island base would be based on the crash site of the "mothership"
Commander White-beard: This is your classic imperial "Good guy" faction or at least was(more neutral now)... Has a mostly standard wooden ship and a long standing friendly rivalry with Brickbeard/Redbeard, and often have conversations about the "good ol' days" back before these new pirates with their high tech space whatsits, and steam powered whosits started plundering the high seas... His docks are perhaps the biggest being sort of a trading port/market where all of the other factions can go for supplies between big adventures...(I figure the docks would have a couple market stalls with fish and hotdogs and perhaps some steaks, as well as a fruit stand, and then have a sort of bar/tavern where people can meet up, and of course what docks would be complete without a crane... )
Then of course we get the return of the Spanish faction too while technically not pirates they still often compete with the other pirates for the current waves mcguffin...
SIGN ME THE FUCK UP FOR THIS THEME
My aunt got me the 2015 fort one, and I got the 2015 skull island.
At this point i'd be happy with any pirate theme, even if it were a nexo-pirates.
I'd really love a UCS Pirate Ship, one that is to scale with a minifig
Space Pirate theme, two awesome flavors on one pizza!
Pirates vs. Ninjas happened once.
...we need a steampunk Pirate line in full.
That minifig scale UCS ship happened in 2010, I think it was called the Imperial Flagship. Took me and three friends six hours to build!

Oh, I remember the pirates theme... I always wanted one of those big 2009 pirateships so I could play Lego pirates instead of my boring(to my younger self) Fisher Price pirate ship.
I eventually made my own, very blocky and square, pirateship with sails made of construction paper. I loved that pirate ship. It had a figurehead, masts, an upper and lower deck, and come custom cannons. I even made a Bionicle Kraken to fight the boat! That boat sailed the carpet seas for many months until I had to borrow some pieces to make another spaceship
I never did get an official pirate ship... oh well. Guess I'll have to fix that.
The 2014 one can be found fairly cheaply and is almost identical to the 2009.
That is how you LEGO
the carpet seas :'D
wholesome
I have the Lego SpongeBob one that comes with the Flying Dutchman.
Didn't expect to see you here, Jade. Nice that there's two great ships to choose from this year!
Well this video was “shipped” out quickly...
Oh, brother. This. Guy. STINKS!
Yo Ho, Yo Ho, a Pirates Life for me
I was just about to comment that but you beat me right to it.
I need to watch those movies again. I've actually been playing the Lego game though.
We drink, we fight, we pillage and loot. Drink up, me hearties, yo ho!

I loved the islanders! I had most of their sets, and far from making me think they were dumb, I thought they were awesome and it made me want to learn more about pacific island cultures. I remember LEGO even had an article about the history and cultures of the pacific islands in one of their magazines. So yeah, they’re cartoonish just like every other character and faction in the pirate line, but they sure didn’t come off as reductive or racist to my 8 year old self.
I agree! The lighting on the box art and photography was stunning!
Oh i love this series
I remember how I stared at their pictures in the catalog for hours thinking on scenarios I can make when i finally get them
Man you are doing an amazing job, I love your vids
Should have released this on National Talk Like A Pirate Day.
Another satisfying episode of Lego rewind, of what I believe is an underrated series of things. I grew up starting with 2009 Lego Pirates, but I was aware of the ones previous to that. I think my first introduction was red beard and his car in like a Racers, and I always love the style of the Pirates sense no matter what year they were released. Strangely enough, I wasn't really involved with Pirates of the Caribbean and didn't pick up any sets except for a few figures. But I do hope for another Pirates revival in a couple years.
Ahoy ye scurvy dogs, LEGO be a buncha landlubbers if they don’t revive this line!
5:44 They should've renamed him to Red(ish-brown) Beard
That’s because he’s not Redbeard. That’s Brickbeard.
I adored the logo pirates line as a kid... And even as a kid I always assumed the red jacketed soldiers and the blue jacketed soldiers were intended to be different nations. After all their ships are similarly colour themed and each set would tend to be one colour or the other.
I seem to remember there being more red ships and blue land sets, so as a kid I concluded they were the British Royal Navy and Spanish colonial forces. respectively.
0:31 absolutely gut-bustingly hilarious delivery on that line. Very well done.
Great video!!!! I had no idea there were so many iterations of the pirate theme!!! That bit about the car made me wanna go back and play Lego Racers again
I'm guessing next episode is ninjas as well as ninjago, right?
I can definitely see him doing Lego Ninjas, but Ninjago is still around. This channel is focused on discontinued themes.
@@legoking6165 I hate to be that one person but this aged poorly
Yeah I just hope that Lego would make a new wave of Pirates but having sets use a lot more modern building techniques and styles that will make the set more appealing to more adult fans in terms of building challenge.
For example the Lego Ideas Fishing Store, imagine those techniques used for a pirate ship.... that would look very nice
I love watching these comments age like wine

Maybe referencing Bionicle rhotuka spinners? Ta da daaa

Rhotuka Spinners. My cat was probably the biggest non-human fan of that gimmick when it first came out (she's still around and I recently pulled out an old spinner and she chased after it like she was a kitten again!)

Oh man, I'm gonna have a heart attack from all this nostalgia....awesome video Nick you did a good job on this one. Also I can happily say that krackin attackin' is an amazing set and one of my personal favorites
I have to agree, the background art for various Lego series was what really *made* them for me. Even something as simple as the warms and cool colors of a sunset was enough to give young me tons of inspiration. It was amazing how Lego could do so much with what they had.
This series has been amazing, and although I didn't comment on it much I am so glad I found it when i did.
My first lego sett was a pirat raft so this brings back so many memorys
Edit it was kraken attack
Kraken' Attackin' was the actual name :-)
Lego David yeh i guess ur right
The only pirates sets I owned was kraken attacken lol
Thank you for posting this, LEGO Pirates was always my favorite!
I don’t see why using cliches and stereotypes for the island tribes is any worse then using stereotypes for the pirates. I mean eyepatches everywhere, striped shirts, wooden legs and bandanas everywhere. No one here is depicted in a realistic way.
It's all about proportion, who was affected more. Surely, you must've heard the horror stories.
removed from the context of pirates of the caribian, those cannibal minifigure are some of the most racist looking things I have ever seen in my life what would you think if you encountered one at a thrift shop or yard sale without context
WHY DO THE YELLOW BRICKS LOOK SO DELICIOUS!? (they look like cookie dough!)
A real classic series of themes, and something that has appeared other themes as well, pirates are everywhere and awaiting the time they will return again.
Especially Redbeard.
I always really liked the imperials more than the pirates. I was not born in the time of classic pirates, however.
Yo, yo, pira...tes???
"Why is the rum gone ?!"
I'm sure Brickbeard found the fountain of youth, and that's why he's been here for more than 30 years.
Am I the only person whom likes the imperials more than the pirates?
Pirates was one of my all-time favorite Lego themes, so I was happy to see you do a rewind of it!
I also give props for you for featuring background music from DKC2--most certainly my favorite pirate-themed video game!
i want castle and pirates to come back! come on lego!
Love your videos keep it up
Just Please keep doing some series like this!
Anything like this works sooo well !!!
also 1st
I would love for Lego to revive pirates but with more of a focus on Mythical pirate legend like the kraken, ghost ships, and ancient abandoned temples.
I’d be on board with pirates vs skeletons and the kraken and stuff They could have skeleton outpost and ships and islands where they can fight on I think it would be better then the soldiers
@@JediBob I just think that it would at least be something new yet similar, since the most recent versions have always been pirates against red/bluecoat soldiers and 2015 sets just looked like 2009 sets but slightly updated. Still I would still like a small soldiers sloop having 3 factions battle it out would be cool.
@@katelystt Yea for sure
Lego Rewind is a great series!
Recent subscriber here. Glad I found this channel. So much nostalgia and research. Don’t worry about getting everything right. I’m surprised and pleased how much work you’ve put into this. Thumbs up and looking forward to looking through this whole series.
There's also another Captain. Captain Ironhook, although he's only in three or so sets.
I loved this theme when I got my first small boat in 1994 and many years later my love is even brighter. I think I got like 75% of the sets including the eldorado fortress and the por. The 2009 version was the main spark that rekindled the flame. I always loved pirates in any was, shape or form but this really is what drives me even today. When they introduced steampunk pirates in ninjago I knew I had to get them xD Such jolly and powerful theme ^^
I've always wanted a pirates set but it's probably the only one I've never had. That 6286 stuck in my mind until now. The canons! The small boat! The shark! At least now I got the small boat though and the best thing about it is that it floats!
Yooooo this is one of my favorite songs from dkc2!
I feel bad for being an empty subscriber in the past few months. But I’m back to watching the series consistently again.
Oh shit, it's bright! The maddest of lads
This is yet another great commentary for pirates and keep going what you do.... Hey, it's Red Beard again in the thumbnail
5:49 I hope he knows about barracuda bay now
I really don't think that the natives are a problem in this series. EVERYONE is a not historically accurate version of their real world counterparts
It is when you look at what actually happened to the natives, things like the Vatican greatly exaggerating myths of cannibalism and such to justify "cleansing" the people.
I would love to see them do Pirates again. Probably will load some fun story into it, moreso than before, just to give it a push. But, hey, just have them around once every few years, and I"m sure we'd all be happy campers.
I know it’s bad to call islanders savages, but some where.... eating people isn’t a “misunderstood “ person
Most of the reports of cannibalism were false. Tall tales made up by colonizers, that or they misunderstood indigenous stories. In Mexico for example, the Aztecs ate food made of corn in the shape of their enemies. When the Spanish reported this to the Vatican, they left out the "corn in the shape of" part. Which is not to say people eating didn’t exist, it just wasn't common practice.
4:44 "Amazing BIONICLE building ideas see pages 10-11" Now that sounds interesting
Thank you planet ripple for this!
This is such as a beautiful nostalgia

Magnificent and beautiful Work Nick! ¿Can you make a Lego Reiwnd for another moment, About old themes of Castle? Like Royal Knights, Black Knights, Dragon Masters, Wolfpack, Crusaders, Black Falcons, and even Castle (2007). There are only ideas, and little help. Keep it up with this magnificent Project.
He already did Dragon Masters.
@@robonaught thank you! I almost forgetting it.
I believe the captain of 2009 is referred to as Brickbeard. That's why his ship is called Brickbeard's Bounty.
The 2015 figure however is really meant to be classic Redbeard.
Not that this would actually matter.
But I quite enjoy Lego's own in-universe lore and it's (in)consistencies.
It's messy. Some of the lore calls him Brickbeard, some calls him Redbeard. Then they have ANOTHER Brickbeard in those 2016 stop motion shorts, attacking characters from other themes of the day, who looks completely different. I wish they'd make up their minds.
@@NickonPlanetRipple haha, at least it's not as weird as the Baron von Barron/Sam Sinister switcheroo.
Still Waiting for the bionicle episode
You just reminded me I have not taken a bath for............. 2 decades? Full on shower guy, don't feel comfortable in water.
i love islanders. Best subset of pirates. And they're not biased.Natives of Americas WERE like that. Don't believe me ? Read actual diaries of Cortez crewman. You'l see how civilized and nice people those natives were.
Oh of course, trust the colonizers. The stereotype that people-eating was commonplace among the natives is bunk. One thing that WAS common among people like, say, the Mayans, was making dolls out of corn and other foodstuffs in the shape of their enemies, and eating that. It's still weird, but at least no one's actually being hurt there. When the settlers reported to the Vatican, they left out the "food in the shape of" part and made it sound as if they were literally eating humans, and that was all the justification they needed to obliterate the locals.
I don't care if they weren't sufficiently "nice" or how they would treat me if I was there. That's just not important enough to excuse steamrolling them like we did.
Piotr Strukiel the islanders weren’t native Americans smh, they were from the pacific.
Yayyyyy another video I’m gonna be so sad when there are no more new LEGO videos ;-;
Hey Nick
Pirates is one of my favourite retired themes so I was looking forward to this video
I owned 2 of the Jack Stone style Pirates sets - the ship and skull island - and as much as the builds are complete actual garbage, I did have a ton of fun with them as a kid. The technic competition canons are one of the better projectile weapons for play because they shoot reliably, decently far, and with large enough ammo that you don't lose it the first time you shoot (that's the biggest problem with the new stud shooters. 1x1 studs just get lost instantly)
That giant skull is just one piece except for the teeth, and I actually still have it and have been trying to find a use for it on a MOC because it does look really cool but it's hard to integrate because of the shape.
As for the ship, it was advertised as floating but in my personal experience about every 5-10 minutes enough water would seep in between sections of the hull that it would sink.
Ah .
Heres his car.
There is a guy on flickr with huge colelction of Pirates and other classic themes.
And I hopes to see Ninja finally, great theme.
0:28 7+ you say?
So Glad you do these, I NEVER KNEW THEY ACTUALLY RE-RELEASED OLD SETS. THEY REALLY SHOULD DO THAT AGAIN.
Arrr... Pirates ;)
We've been waiting, Nick.
LOL, I love how you're covering the Ninja theme right after you covered the pirates theme. I do kind of wish Lego would make a full-on original pirate theme again, possibly modern-day pirates.
Steampunk pirates a la Metalbeard? We did have something close to that back when Ninjago had the Sky Pirates.
Modern-day pirates are... a touchy subject. Just ask Captain Phillips.
@@MrCat-zz5eo Yeah, but a whole theme dedicated to modern day piracy. Kind of like having a hijacked police boat that's been modified and painted over with a Jolly Roger.
@@Autisticguywithacamera
Hmm... that might be way too controversial and edgy for LEGO to let fly. And again, modern-day piracy in certain waters is no child's play.
However, something ridiculously childish yet utterly bombastic might work.
Like an Urban Pirates theme!
Taking inspiration from that one scene in the second Spongebob movie where Burgerbeard turns his boat into a land cruiser capable of doubling as a food truck, maybe combining bikers in road hogs, dudes in RVs, and _absolutely massive 18-wheelers_ with a spray-painted Jolly Roger might be the ticket!
@@MrCat-zz5eo That sounds so goofy it's awesome.
Ahh, my first favourite Lego theme when I was like 6 or something. And it's still charming.
finally
Awesome little doc!
'... Or there's a sixth or seventh Pirates of the Caribbean move...'
Did anyone else just feel a chill run down their back?
Nice look back, man! This isn't entirely related to this video, but one of the things I loved about the years I first got into LEGO (around 2007 onwards), was that every year we got some something new or revisited. You had evergreen stuff like Star Wars or City, but you'd see them flip-flop between their own original lines and ideas continuously. They went from Aqua Raiders, Castle, Exo-Force, Bionicle, Mars Mission, Racers, Agents, Pirates, Power Miners, Space Police, Atlantis, Kingdoms, World Racers, and their Collectible Figures... and that was all within 4 years! Not to mention the evergreen stuff or licensed themes, and many of those themes overlapped with each other. It was nice, and it let you get a little bit of everything. The only pirates sets I have are your beloved KRAKEN ATTACKIN', which I actually loved as a kid, and like 2 from Pirates of the Caribbean. Something about rafts I really liked, they felt adventurous and wholesome for whatever reason.
If LEGO wants to try something with pirates or their other original lines with a twist, here's an idea...
_Space Pirates!_ Whether it's a Blacktron remake or something steam/cyber-punk like Treasure Planet, I think it could be interesting. You could have the spaceships for the Imperial/Alien/Rogue factions, plus you could make tons of great alien creatures... Space Kraken, anyone?
Treasure Planet-like steampunk/cyber space pirates would make me buy the entire collection. Cyborg space kraken vs Rocket Galleon? *Count me in!*
*_SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!_*
Nothing short of perfect. Everything I'll miss if this whole thing goes away. Sorty to be a downer.
Please make a Lego rewind on classic space. It's one of my favourite themes ever.
Please no. I've already talked about it in other videos.
@@NickonPlanetRipple That's ok. I'll just watch your old videos, also I'm pretty excited for the next episode.

I miss the old simple sets, yellow boxes, and beautiful classic system sets....simpler, better times....Imperialist view and all....
I acyually own both the black seas barricuda (1989) and brickbeard's bounty (2009)
It's a major step down from it's predecessor. Less detail, smaller, and the rigging holding up the sails is hot garbage. I've modified it pretty heavily but I still need to redo the rigging- The barricuda's rigging is strong and brick built while the bounty's is made of those long bendable clip pieces. They're a nightmare to work with in this context. Interestingly, the masts are reused from vikings, although only the top half was brought back for 2009. 2016's ship has the lower half
Hey, Nick. Looking back on all the themes you've covered: if you could pick 5 Themes to bring back (Not including Intellectual Properties based on Movies or TV), what would you pick?
I'm hoping with the success of the barracuda bay set that they are least consider making a pirates theme again. They made an article at one point saying they ended the last pirates series since it sold poorly of course but also because it seemed to them like the newer generations of kids weren't as interested in pirates themes in general pop culture / media as the previous generations and there wasn't as much pirate themed media in general.
I was born in 2000 and always wanted the 2nd to last pirate series (sadly I grew up in a poor family so we never got much and I was more devoted to Bionicle, hero factory, power miners, and some SW the clone wars so the few sets I would get would be among those themes), but I always wanted sets from other themes and ESPECIALLY pirates. I always looked at the boxes and sets for pirates in Barnes and nobles as a kid wishing I could get some, even the small $9.99 boxes looked so cool and fun.
But ye there Definitely isn't as much pirate themed things in current media especially children's media which can have a bit of an influence on no interest in pirates sadly.
I also personally love sets with cloth / paper sails and strings over brick built ones, it feels cooler, more fun / badass, and it makes it FEEL like a real toy pirate ship. I wish they had more smaller sets / pirate sail boats too to go along with the massive ships in each wave (I know original pirates had some small ships like that but there wasn't much like that in the newer lines).
Now that I'm an adult during quarantine I bought the barracuda bay set and it was an absolute blast to finally be able to buy, build, and enjoy the hell out of a pirates set. It's sad I'm not a kid anymore to really enjoy it as a child / play with it but it was a fun experience (and an AMAZING set) and it gave me lots of nostalgia for that earlier time in my life.
One thing I especially love about Pirates 1 is the faces and simple prints. I think the face prints / design were PERFECT in pirates and I wish modern day lego minifigs had more classic style faces in a similar way to these faces.
Hi nick, Im from the future - LEGO just released Pirates of Barracuda Bay. My god, your wish for a wrecked ship came true! Plus you can convert it officially to an elegant remake of the Black Seas Barracuda!
Day.one.purchase.
The 2004 pirates theme was my favorite as a kid. I think I ended up getting all of those sets over the span of a number of days. I wish I had all those sets together in 1 place.. Divorced parents mean different sets at different homes.
I just can't call the sets garbage. They're part of my childhood! I liked them and they're pretty cute in my opinion. But that's just because of my childhood.
I remember being a wee lad and looking longingly at the giant ship sets that I would never be able to afford, but now, many years later, I just ordered Pirates of Barracuda Bay. I am very excited. Now I just need Lego to do a new Steam Locomotive similar to the Emerald Night so I can finish my "childhood longing" collection
Yes I'm writing this quite late and I don't know if anyone has pointed this out yet, but the 2009 pirates didn't bring back the classic palm trees. The old ones had a segmented trunk that was posable, while the new one was a single static piece.
Anyways, great series, glad to watch it.
Honestly, I would probably pick up those Islander minis for like a Gilligan's Island build for nothing more than authenticity for the show.
Otherwise yeaaah, kinda of awkward looking back on them.
You know with how much you brought up Brickbeard I’m surprised you didn’t bring up the “Lego Battles” video game on the DS. A game where he is one of the hero units. In fact, are you familiar with the game? I remember playing it forever ago, not only was it a pretty great RTS game but I remember it was fun to literally command minifiges and vehicles that you could actually buy in real Lego sets.
here is an idea a pirate war between all of LEGOs pirate factions form Red Beard to Captain Soto and Natakhan the genie, Metalbeard (LEGO Jack Sparrow?) just every pirate you can think of in a massive LEGO battle that would be a cool set idea (maybe)
