I'm fairly certain Ninjago was intended to be a spiritual successor to Bionicle from the beginning; I don't think it's a coincidence both it and Hero Factory came out around the same time. I get the feeling both were made to test the waters about what made Bionicle popular, as if Lego still didn't understand themselves. Hero Factory was the "constraction figure" aspect, with simple builds the first wave and then later brought up to snuff with the new CCBS pieces, while Ninjago was the story and lore aspect, with a richly crafted world full of character, mystery and legend. And the Bionicle reboot definitely solidifies the idea that they don't understand Bionicle's success. They put together some really, _really_ good CCBS characters, then hung them out to dry with a supporting story that was one, completely barebones and minimal effort, and two, it was too much of a departure from the original Bionicle in terms of how certain things worked and how each character acts. The original Bionicle sold so well because Lego bothered to craft a rich story to accompany the figures.
I actually don't think that Bionicle G2 was cancelled because of it failing. I'm pretty sure Lego cancelled it because they had too many bigger projects going on at the time that they didn't want to risk because of the money they were putting into Bionicle.
Bionicle G1 owes much of its success to ADVANCE and Templar Studios, both of whom nailed the tone, visuals and atmosphere that hooked fans in the first place. Lego doesn't really understand that on their own, probably because it doesn't really fit into their image.
He mentions some good points, Lego SHOULD HAVE had Bionicle evolve the way Ninjago forced them to, rather than replacing it with some other fad-line that they would exhaust in a few years as well(hero factory) not to say hero factory was bad per se, rather, it wasn't an optimal choice to just start a new thing, I mean, I can already think of ways to rewrite herofactory to make it fit into the narrative of Bionicle, I won't post them just yet, but if I do ever get to writing it down, I think I'll comment it here first. Oh and another thing: I don't care about the likes, just, I want these things to get some recognition, for all it's worth.
The reason G2 Bionicle's story is simple is because the previous one was too complicated, so if I would want to learn the history of G1, it would take some time. G2 isn't that bad, by the way
People will probably fond it pretty ninjago esque if they dont know the original theyve alrewdy done a team of unique mechs with different gimmiks in ninjago

2019 is the first ninjago season to have different writers from the ones that had been with the series since 2011, which is why the tone is so different
Actually, 2016 was the first year Ninjago had different writers. The main head writers of the show (Dan and Kevin Hageman) were working on Trollhunters at the time. But they returned to Ninjago for 2018. But then they left in 2019, this time for good.
Although a lot of people hate it, I actually appreciate how Lego decided to change up the Ninja appearance later on. They couldn't stay young forever and I felt it was the right step for them, it also gave us great new hair pieces and kept the characters from getting to repetitive.
you have no idea how true that is, have you ever seen an x-ray render of an A-10? the gun and ammo feed system take up a majority of the front half of the fuselage
Honestly, I've never been a system guy. Mainly because I think my parents probably thought lego playsets were too expensive, so all my LEGO is Bionicle/constraction. I didn't know much about Ninjago, but if it's this generation's Bionicle. That makes me happy, because kids will have the chance to experience what I grew up with too. It's just in the standard LEGO form and not action figures.
Though I never had any of this theme's sets, I really enjoy how much sand green is in it. I would also say that I had a decent mix of system and contraction, even if most them were Bionicle and Exo-Force.
Man this was a trip. I remember my friends and I going all out with ninjago back when it first came out back in 2011. We bought the sets, played the spinner game, it was one hell of a time. Then I moved later that year, I was still just as into it as ever but not many other people in my new town were. Until 6th grade when it became the thing that helped me meet one of my closest friends to this day. Eventually we both kinda tapped out of the theme after the nindroid era. I was still into lego but it just kinda drifted from me I guess. I’d still always see it around though. Last week when I was in a lego store however, I happened to spot the remakes of Jays storm fighter, and the epic dragon battle and got one of the biggest nostalgia rushes I’ve felt in awhile. I didn’t pick them up, but I might in the future. And having this come out not too long after, just made it feel all the more nostalgic. All in all, I’m just amazed to see how far the theme has come in the 8 year timespan its been out, and while I haven’t completely kept up with the theme in all that time, it definitely left me plenty of memories. From back when I was in 4th grade to me being a freshman in college now. Where does the time go?
I was 10 when Ninjago started. I got most of the sets, all of the spinners, and me and my friends would Pretend to be the ninjas on the playground. I fell off on it after the nindroid arc. It then didn’t feel like a “ninja theme” anymore. However, recently I’ve started collecting them again. Sons of Garmadon made me fall in love with the theme again. The dragons are my favorite part.
I wish I could look at ninjago the way I looked at bionicle. This theme started in my dark ages, so much to my regret. Im glad kids today have this awesome theme to escape to, the way I escaped to the mystical island of mata nui in the time before time.
I wish i could look at Bionicle the way i look into Ninjago. Different ages, but i just love how much we have in common, even when the themes are so different.
@@AlexGonzalez-gf4ozhey, this is me from the future. I finally got into Ninjago, I can honestly say Im a fan of both themes equally, each theme has what the other is missing. Yay, now I get to enjoy both!
I still remember watching the "Meet Zane" TV ad for the first time. I freaked out because it was a new LEGO theme and it looked awesome. It feels like it was yesterday. We've come a long way.
I remember back in 2012 me and my friend had this theory that there's going to be a purple ninja and it was going to be we had some crazy ideas, I also think it's interesting how people have a different viewpoint on Ninjago like my friend's little brother thinks that Lloyd's always been one of the ninjas but to me he's one of the newbies. These videos make my day it's not like I can't live without them I just really enjoy
My brothers got all hyped when they were about to reveal who the green ninja was, and did endless UA-cam searches on "who is green ninja Ninjago" until finally a video popped up. It was a rickroll.
I actually have quite a few takeaways here; 1) Man, as someone who was in the sad and desperate "gotta look mature" stage of my life when Ninjago rolled out, I missed something pretty special... 2) It's genuinely impressive how much of a backbone Bionicle really is to Lego's recent history. And it's equally impressive to see a spiritual successor in a such an unlikely place! 3) It's simultaneously kind of depressing that one line managed to monopolize so many themes and elements that would be more than enough for their own lines, completely organically and probably by accident. 4) That being said, all this series needs now are cowboys, dinosaurs, aliens, cowboy dinosaur aliens and a quirky animal sidekick and it would be PERFECT. 5) REDBEARD IS ETERNAL. 6) I adore all of these enemy factions that we see in these modern lego lines. Multiple villain factions per season is my jam, and it's always exciting seeing just how people try to manage themes and ideas each time. 7) *VOMITING NOISE*
@@leonardodisavino6166 AH YES Like the Thirteen Primes before the coming of The Shroud, Redbeard is everywhere and anywhere, WHEREVER there are building blocks to plunder!

Same, however i still managed to collect alot of the bionicle figures from various waves. But ngl i used to love ninjago and I watched it until season 5 with the island where i kinda grew out of it. I thought it was over for ninjago and then years later I found out that there were more seasons and I wanted to get back into it but idk it just felt like alot to catch up on and the movie, I didnt like how they changed everything but after watching this, I realized they probably changed it for the better. I didnt know if they completely rebooted the series or the lore was just expanding more and more.
12:00, Hmmm, a bunch of snake-like creatures forming a hive-mind to control larger forms? Where have I seen that before? It's totally the Lekgolo (Hunters) from Halo!!!
If there is one huge positive to Ninjago’s success, it’s that the introduction of all these new LEGO pieces will give LEGO another opportunity to revisit older lines besides Bionicle. Let’s take the giant cars from the Ninjago Rebooted series for example: All those long, bow-shaped pieces; The new rims for the wheels; All of that stuff could be used by LEGO to create a brand-new spiritual successor to the Racers line. Same goes for Exo-Force too. And...well...IF that’s what ultimately happens, then as far as I’m concerned, Ninjago has earned the right to be LEGO’s predominantly powerhouse.
I remember watching the Ninjago cartoon with my siblings growing up. It was probably my favorite show back then, and I can almost call it my personal gateway into anime.
Wow I didn't even realise how many waves and sets Ninjago had and for how long that theme runs now. I never cared much for it as it just isn't my cup of tea, but I absolutly see why it is loved by so many. I like classic Ninja more, because I like historical themes in general.
I feel like as soon as you see the new wave, you’ll flip. I love how you mention the “keeping fresh” this new Season 12 wave is seriously keeping it fresh.
I'm a pretty serious collector of pre-2004 Lego, and I've already got enough to do dealing with all that. I had no idea how deep this series is. It'd be like a part time job to complete this collection.
In a way..... yes, but given how much real estate it's eaten in recent years that would normally go to other original themes, it's sort of like you're collecting everything under the ninjago banner? Want a cyberpunk/videogame/Reboot-esque theme? There's a Ninjago wave for that. Want a D&D style Tabletop theme? Ninjago. Want islanders? Ninjago. And I hate that. I hate that instead of making other themes for these tropes, it's all been absorbed by the Ninjago brand. It's depressing.
I do agree with the theme kind of cannibalizing on other potential original themes, but at the same time it is also probably the only 'safe' platform for TLG to do stuff as out there as "sky pirates" without it being a total bust. I don't mind it as it makes it easier to check in and out with each wave and only grabbing what seems neat.
Those original Ninja sets are probably some of my favourite Lego sets ever. I love the way they used more primitive bricks to recreate such grand structures. I own quite a lot of the red ninja sets but I have a dream of one day owning them all and making a layout.
Fun fact: LEGO Battles, and RTS game that was on the DS, there were 3 different themes, that being castle, pirates, and space. The game suggests that instead of being a castle theme ninjas were actually a pirates theme due to the fact they were extras for the pirates rather than the castle theme, but this may be because Dwarfs were already the extras for castle.
For all my lack of looking into LEGO, this was the one I couldn’t Ignore. It hit me like a tons of bricks. I have a buddy who has a cousin that loves these things. It’s good for kids to have their era’s defining mark.
Minute 10:59 LEGO actually gave an explanation for using that face, 2 Ninjago citizens called Colin and Landon wanted to join Nadakhan's crew and he gave them new names that where more pirate-ish, Bucko and Squiffy. i suggest you to rewatch the episode, it's from season 6 episode 7, that season is my favorite.
Little side note about the movie; The thing i think a lot of people missed is that it's a story being told by a shop owner to some random kid. Heck, technically it could be considered fanfiction because of how we see an actual ninjago minifig at the start of the movie.
*Long before time had a name, the first spinjitzu master created Ninjago, using four Elemental weapons. But when he passed, a dark presence sought out to collect them all! Lord Garmadon.. So I, Sensei Wu, his brother, sought out to find four ninja to collect them first.*
Good video, as always. I really loved ninja "castle" when I was a kid. It had the feudal Japan vibe going. Most of the set builds were buildings, which I loved. Was never into vehicle sets overall. And Ninja castle felt and looked gritty. Shoguns and ninja clans. Clad in black, sneaking and scaling buildings. I never really got into Ninjago felt nothing like that, it started more a with gimmicky, "playset" stuff, with the spinners and spinjitsu stuff. Then it became more and more like Bionicle. So I understand why its so loved by the current generation. I never really got into it. I love most figures and building sets, but not the tons of vehicles and playsets, that look too "kiddy" for my taste. And the ones that do look good for display are expensive as hell. The old ninja castle sets are very displayable and I would looove to get my hands on one of those sets again and put it on my shelf.
Above excellent episode - you commented on themes that are meaningful well beyond a nostalgia trip. I know you've said in the past that rewinds have been mostly been based on your own experiences and it can be hard to create videos on something you aren't as personally attached to (more videos and analysis please!), but I hope this is a good example of going back on that a bit. I grew up with original ninja / bionicle, not Ninjago, and you managed to succinctly connect the inspiration of past themes into our present, along with an analysis of each wave. Your commentary is meaningful. LEGO rewind? LEGO historian at this point. Chima fans may have not known of Fabuland, Ninjago fans may have not seen original Ninja, Star Wars fans may have never seen anything retro space without your easily accessible rewinds. I appreciate the connections of related themes through generations. Thanks Nick! As an afterthought, I am glad Ninjago allows LEGO to try things on their own accord. The oligopoly of licensed themes selling better (at an MSRP premium) is disheartening, but I am happy Ninjago allows freedom in some form for LEGO to try new things. Hidden Side reminds me of the Possession Ninjago wave, which makes me think those sets sold well. I don't think hidden side will stick, as the app seems like a gimmick. LEGO is a strong physical presence in a virtual world, they should lean into their strengths with that. Unikitty sets seemed to be another cautious entry. LEGO has always been a bit behind on tech that appeals to children, but exceeds in things with high engineering ceilings (robotics and technic are still highly utilized). Maybe too early to call, but I think they have to stick with Ninjago until they get another intellectual property with undeniable longevity. I can't complain. They have to try. Last time I was scooping lego discounts, someone was asking if any Ninjago was on sale, and none appeared to be half off like many other sets were (Anecdotal). What a great Toy.
Having recently gotten into Ninjago with the sons of Garmadon and hunted seasons this video was a nice treat to see pop up. A lot of my BIONICLE friends still talk in circles hating on Ninjago and I admit I used to be guilty of that myself- here’s hopin this rewind can get people to appreciate the theme!
Very nice video Nick, like all your Lego Rewinds. Nevertheless, I have to contradict you with "Ninjago is the new Bionicle". Ninjago and Bionicle don't have much in common other than some similar story elements and maybe characters. At Bionicle it was planned from the beginning that the great spirit was a robot and that the goal of our heroes was to awaken him. This story was told in a fairly cheap way through novels, online games and stories, animations and B movies, and it wasn't easy to follow her. One of the main criticisms of Bionicle Storyline was that the story was mostly not told visually. At Ninjago, on the other hand, there is the TV show, which is the only way to follow the story. That made it a lot easier to follow her there, plus most of the story was purely visual. At Ninjago there was no plan from the start, the pilot episodes were only used to establish the characters, the real plot only began from the first season. You can tell because something like prophecy, the green ninja, Garmadon's wife and son was not told by Wu in the pilots, although it's pretty important. After season 2 the series should be over and after it went on, it was definitely not the "New Bionicle". Since from there on there was no goal in the plot, and all the stories from there on were just little arcs that don't build up an endgame. In addition, in the first year of Bionicle, Bionicle did what Ninjago still hasn't succeeded in 10 years with the topic of world. In Bionicle Golden Years on the island of Mata Nui, we know that this island was named after great spirits, his brother betrayed him and is now terrorizing the island, and the Toa are there to stop him. These Toa were created to defeat the Makuta, they have six different elements as well as masks, which also have different abilities. In addition, the Matoran live on this island, who, like the Toa, belong to an element and live in villages. These villages are in a province of the island that fits the element of the villagers. In these villages there are also the Turaga, who are basically the tribal chiefs. Everything we know about Ninjago is: Ninjago was created by the first Spinjitzu master with the help of the four golden weapons who have elemental powers of fire, lighting, ice and earth ( andby the way, there are actually five, because the shuriken of the ice are two shuriken, and thus two separate weapons),The FSM had also had two sons who were supposed to protect the land, the older of them became Evil and was banned because of it, then it was the younger brother's job to protect the land from his older brother. But since he was getting old and knew that he would not live forever, he decided to train four new students who would do his duties. But later we learn that there is a kind of prophecy behind it, because these four ninja were destined to become ninja and one of them would become a green ninja. This green ninja would then restore the balance between good and evil. But later we learn that Lloyd is the green ninja even though he's not a ninja. We are also learn about something of a primordial evil called Overlord that we did not know about before. Later it turns out that there are still other people who master the elements, even without golden weapons. Although it was previously said that the ninja could only use the elemental power through the weapons. We also learn that the ninja's parents were also elemental masters, which means that they inherited their powers from them, which contradicts what was said above. I could go on like this forever, but it should be clear that this whole thing with the elemental powers and the prophecy was never entirely planned. What else we know about the island of Ninjago: There is a city there called Ninjago City in which there is an emperor but who no longer has any political power, there are also other villages where people live, and places where the bad guys live, that's it more is not learned about the island in general. The problem with Ninjago is that the TV show is the only canon. There are no guides to the world of Ninjago books that give us more information about the island and the residents. This was probably done so that the writers have a free hand and thus do not have to stick to anything that was told in a book. But this doesn't matter either way, because this show is full of plot holes anyway. Except for the TV show, Ninjago has nothing to offer when it comes to story, Bionicle, however, has created a universe that can be compared to Star Wars. This is mainly because it explained everything down to the last detail, what it has established such as powers, places, characters and so on. My comment has become longer than I thought, and I'm not even finished with all of them, but let's get to the end: So I don't see how you can compare Bionicle to Ninjago.
gosh I can still remember when I was comming home from pre-school and running to the TV to watch Ninjago at 1pm. Ah, good times. The first season will always stay special for me.
Ninjago is hands down the most quality and generous Lego line of all time, the sets are jaw droppingly gorgeous, especially the Ninjago Movie City sets, those are some of the best looking sets that they have ever made, I wish other lines like the Superhero lines and Star Wars got the same treatment when It comes to quality

Awesome video! I had no idea Ninjago had such a great and detailed story. I used to feel sad about newer generations not having Bionicle, but they don't need it. They got ninjago, and it seems to be every bit as good. Thanks for making these videos!
1:03 that 6088 Ninja set was my first ever LEGO set. My cousin got it and my 6 year old self was blown away (I had no idea about LEGO), so I got it as well - thus began my passion for LEGO. I actually came up with a Ninja-based kind of Ninjago/Bionicle story and characters together with a friend before Bionicle was even a thing. My character was the storm (wind/electricity) ninja, which was the white/black/golden samurai minifig but without the armor and with a black ninja hood, and the golden samurai horn pieces were lightning boomerangs. I do feel old with everyone in the comments talking about Ninjago instead of the original Ninja theme though :P
I honestly wouldn’t mind if ninjago retired I would love to see more of those classic ninja/castle themes as well as new action adventure themes like monkie kid
I seriously loved this episode. I'm not sure how involved you have been previously with Ninjago, but the research is incredible!! And I really agree with you about the state of LEGO and the colossus shadow of Ninjago's monopoly. Seriously some great stuff!
I remember watching the Ninjago TV show when I was a kid. It's really what showed me that Lego could actually bring a cohesive story to the table to go along with their toys, and in fact it interested me more than the toys ever did. I haven't seen the show since it ended its initial run so I can't say whether or not it's aged well, but for the time it piqued my interest and I commend it for that.
Hey Nick, thanks for making this video. I'm sorta 're-attached' to Lego because of a Star Wars set I purchased earlier this year to make a build+review video about it. And this video alone sums up of my curiosity why Ninjago survived, and learning about the cancelled cancellations/retirement. I was drifting away really far from Lego because of other toylines/brands I also collect. But everytime I visit a toy shop, I always look at what Ninjago had at that time until pandemic hits to this very day. Again, thanks for this and other Rewind videos you've made. The vomiting noise really gets me.

I didn't know much about Ninjago, but if it's this generation's Bionicle. That makes me happy, because kids will have the chance to experience what I grew up with too. Been waiting for this one. After the heartbreak of Bionicle ending, I became a superfan of Ninjago. I still love both to this day.
Hi poer
@@ZaneKun33 hello

@@qtulhoo Don't forget the Brown Ninja guy who I can't remember (haven't looked at Ninjago stuff since halfwayish through the evil robots).
I actually have quite a few takeaways here;
1) Man, as someone who was in the sad and desperate "gotta look mature" stage of my life when Ninjago rolled out, I missed something pretty special...

I am currently watching this on the 14th of Jan 2021 for the 10th time.

Man, I still remember the hype around the first year of Ninjago. Those spinners were out of stock everywhere

Me and the *B O I S* getting ready to become tornado’s.
Ninjago's 10th aniversary is less than a year away. That makes me feel really old.
Once you wrap up this series, I'm gonna binge watch all of the episodes in one session.
For all my lack of looking into LEGO, this was the one I couldn’t Ignore. It hit me like a tons of bricks. I have a buddy who has a cousin that loves these things. It’s good for kids to have their era’s defining mark.

I mean, the Chima episode worked, so why not this?

1:03 that 6088 Ninja set was my first ever LEGO set. My cousin got it and my 6 year old self was blown away (I had no idea about LEGO), so I got it as well - thus began my passion for LEGO. Hey Nick, thanks for making this video. I'm sorta 're-attached' to Lego because of a Star Wars set I purchased earlier this year to make a build+review video about it. But everytime I visit a toy shop, I always look at what Ninjago had at that time until pandemic hits to this very day.
