    Compare what we have now to 2010. I miss when we had Harry Potter, Star Wars, and prince of Persia, but still had castle, space police, and those mummy sets. We really need more unlicensed stuff nowadays.

      I remember how excited all my friends were when I got the complete Pod Racer box set for Christmas. For a long time I didn't think I got that many Star Wars sets, but looking back I had two thirds of The Phantom Menace catalog and half the Attack of the Clones including the Slave I. For some reason I thought there were way more sets out there. Kind of fell out of Legos by Revenge of the Sith.

    Around 5:45, that AT-AT MOC from ‘82 is, in fact, a pretty good representation of how difficult making any sort of walker was with the parts of the time, and you’re not wrong about how much we’d all been wishing for Lego Star Wars by 1999. I had been dreaming of that moment for almost 20 years.
    Literally: I had an extremely vivid dream sometime in the early ‘80s that Lego Star Wars sets were being released and I’d gotten to see them early (Millennium Falcon, TIE Fighter, X-Wing, AT-AT), and to this day I still can recall snippets of the dream-and I never remember my dreams. But I knew as soon as I woke up that it would never happen. So I was a kid again when the first OT Star Wars sets were revealed, even as crude as they were.

      The yellow minifgs all suck, they dont represent racial diveristy or "everyone" like Lego said at all. Theyre all the same color, which teaches the wrong message of "sameness is good" to kids. Plus all of the designs for the their faces/hair usually look white anyways. What black or Indian kid is gonna grab a yellow minifg and go "Oh yeah this represents me!" They wont. Bless the licensed themes for introducing different skin tones, they need to have those in all of the sets, get rid of the dated yellow figs I say!

    I honestly do agree with you, having licenses back in the early 2000s was more of a specialty among the creative ideas that Lego itself could come up with. Nowadays I do believe that the design elements make the sets way better than their original counterparts, believe me I grew up with the original Star Wars and Harry Potter sets so I know exactly how that feels. However, licenses nowadays make it feel like turning everything into Lego but forgetting what Lego itself actually is.

    It’s criminal how LEGO never bothered to make an actual Sonic The Hedgehog set, especially after the Sonic DLC Pack for LEGO Dimensions. Just imagine building a bunch of classic Badniks bundled with a bulky Robotnik figurine, or a fully-working Animal Capsule filled with Flickies, or even a recreation of the Doomsday Zone fight.

      As for the Adventure and Modern Eras, the cinematic moments and Final Bosses would be absolute treats to fully construct; the chases with the Emerald Coast orca and City Escape GUN truck would be amazing, Metal Overlord already literally transformed himself piece by piece in Heroes so it’d work perfectly with LEGO, Dark Gaia and the Gaia Colossus would tower over everything and the Egg Nega Wisp Armour would’ve been pretty rad.

    I fell in love with Harry Potter back in 2017. I have had on/off again relationship with Star Wars my whole life. I never liked the HP sets as a kid, but as an adult, I love them all. I loved the origional SW sets until around 2003-2005, and I love these new sets since about 2 years ago. HOWEVER, I agree with you on some of the points you make about how as good as some of these themes and sets are, they are destorying LEGO's original ideas and those fun iconic sets of the space exploration, ocean fighting, midevel sets, etc. I couldn't believe how LEGO had aquired the license to Spiderman and Jurassic Park as a kid, but now I can't keep up as an adult that even has a kid who likes LEGO himself on all the new sets. Wish I had all of my old sets from 1998-2003 time frame (mainly). Those are iconic and I appreciate your youtube channel for showing these sets, some of which I have forgotten since then.

    Great review, and definitely a nice nostalgia trip. Fun fact, the TIE Fighters in the original trilogy were actually meant to be blue, but that made them invisible when filming with bluescreen. So in a way, the original LEGO sets weren't too inaccurate. Also, those were my favorite Droideka minifig builds too - they never really got them right afterward, with their most recent redesign looking especially terrible.
    Incidentally, your voice work in this video seems to be improving - I don't know what it is about it, but you really nailed it in this video!

  • @maxmiller5619

    Being born in 84 and raised on Lego and as a fan of most of what they have actual licences for now, you had to get creative. Here's an example: I remember my friends and I would use the long translucent antenna pieces as lightsabers. Now kids can just use, well, actual Lego lightsabers. I can really enjoy some of the licensed lines. I own stuff from Lego Batman, Marvel (mostly only comic based), Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Pirates of the Caribbean, Ghostbusters, and so on...but I too always found myself annoyed when, say, they'd deem LOTR Castle, POTC Pirates, or SW Space for the year or longer. It was always kind of heartbreaking! Like a great example here; I would take Monster Fighters over Scooby Doo ANY DAY!

  • @depressedbreakfast2614
    @depressedbreakfast2614 5 років тому +3

    That last quote “licensed sets need to be balanced out with LEGOs themes it needs to be 50/50” is very accurate
    The main reason why legos themes fail is because they don’t market them and if they have a show or something based around them it usually isn’t well developed.
    But when they do promote their own themes and give them proper story’s they do extremely well (ninjago, bionicle)
    Personally I’d love a new original CCBS theme

    The Harry Potter sets have always been rising in quality. The Star Wars sets, meanwhile, flip back and forth in quality as much as the movies. Those are getting way too expense. For me my favourite licensed themes as a kid was the original LEGO Batman. That toy-line actually introduced me to the Batman universe and defined for me what all the characters and vehicles look like. They were also great sets with a fantastic Batmobile, Batwing and Batcave. Sadly I think Batman has run his course when it comes to LEGO, a lot of the sets just make worse versions of the vehicles and if there’s ever a cool exclusive minifig like Killer Moth or Batwoman I’d rather buy them separately online for cheap instead of putting a ton of money into buying another Batmobile.

    Another fun evolution of Minifigures thanks to Star Wars and Harry Potter is the start of double sided faces. This only started because Professor quirrell from the first Harry Potter movie actually did have a face on the back of his head, representing an element of Voldemort. It's very cool that since then we've had many expressions for popular characters

    Fun fact: the Basilisk isn't actually green! The animatronic/puppet they used for filming actually had black skin, but the Chamber of Secrets was filled with a green light/glow that altered its appearance.
    That said, I'm pretty sure the canonical color outside of movie-magic is supposed to be dark green, so the video game version is the closest we've gotten and even that's not quite right.

    While at a antique store earlier this year, found a bag ziplock bag full of minifigs of 90's an maybe early 2000's characters. Harry Potter an a bank looking Goblin and a Star Wars X - Wing pilot, The Star Wars buildable figures could see a type of vehicle build done up for them, besides the one for the Biker Trooper that was cool looking an could see more done there for that. Wonder what would happen if Star Wars and Harry Potter was combined in a crossover of some kind? Other then that where you see Boba Fett and Darth Maul walk in asking about a ship, to the one seen with A2-D2 showing a recording for someone to make more ships, could see something like that be brought back and added on to in some way maybe?

    In LEGO's defense, the First Order AT-ST set reflects the scene in The Last Jedi where BB-8 Hijacks a walker and almost the whole head gets ripped off as it breaks loose of its docking port.
    They could have at the very least included the parts necessary for a head, with an easy break-off feature, instead of a stupid elevator build. What pissed me off more was that Heavy Scout Walker which didn't show up anywhere and was just pure concept art.

    • @NickonPlanetRipple
      @NickonPlanetRipple  5 років тому

      I'm familiar with the scene, I know what they were doing. It just sucks that they left out the head. Now people may never get to buy a complete, proper First Order AT-ST.

      @@NickonPlanetRipple on the bright side, the set sold poorly and LEGO will probably make up for it in the Star Wars wave after Episode IX releases. I doubt The Last Jedi will be the last time we see a First Order AT-ST, much like in ROTJ, where we see AT-ATs parked on Endor's forest moon. I have a hunch Episode IX will be a pseudo-apology for Rian Johnson "subverting our expectations".
