- This video features a before and after on a pair of really beat up Magnanni Balmoral Oxfords. In this video I go over a little bit about Magnanni, as well as explaining these shoes' Blake Stitched construction. I do a full shine on the shoes including some scratch repair and dent repair.

Hi, thank you for these videos great info and easy to learn/understand. I got 1pair allen edmonds in the same colour as these shoes in the video, but they got water stains on and looks really bad with dark spots.. is it any way to remove it without buying any expensive products?

Love your videos as always. I am so glad that you have finally monetized your channel as I have been asking you to do for years. I generally don't comment much on your videos, because you make content for US viewers and US brands (understandable) and I have had very limited experience with US shoes and boots all of which went to eBay for different reasons. However I have a pair of Magnanni double monk straps and I will comment a little. On your opinion that goodyear welted shoes are more comfortable than blake construction - generally I agree, however blake shoes are much easier to break in. For example I have very sensitive heels and the smallest slip gives me blisters. For that purpose I have a pair of silicone socks I wear under my cotton socks the first few times with new shoes outside. Most of my goodyear welted shoes I had to wear 4-6 times with silicone socks to break in fully. It took me just 2 times for my Magnanni shoes. They are now my most comfortable non sneaker shoes. I even were guarding some students against cheating in one of my local universities during a state exam and I was in my pair for 13+ hours and after I got home it took me just 15 minutes of rest to be ready for a night out. I have rubber protectors and toe plates on mine so I can't say if a person feels the ground more ( I always install protectors on all of my leather sole shoes).

This is awesome! I just thrifted the exact pair of Magnanni's at a local thrift store about 3 days ago myself. Mine were $12.91 plus tax. Wish I knew how to take a picture of mine, and show you. What are the odds...I thrift this pair...then a couple of day later you post a video of yours? I am still searching for my first pair of Shell Cordovan through. I remember you saying in one video, you have managed to thrift like 7 or 8 pair of shell. I have yet to come across any. Shell, in my opinion, is the Holy Grail of thrifted mens shoes. I just love your channel. Keep up the good work!
ThAnK YoU! Yes, shell is elusive. I have never actually found a pair of shell shoes in MY size though. I DID thrift a pair of Florsheim Imperial 93605s (shell) in size 12C. They're a back burner project. As is, they're too narrow for me to wear comfortably, and they're in terrible shape, so I may try rebuilding them with a new wider footbed to turn them into a 12E or 11.5 E. I already bought the leather for the new footbed, the split reverse welting, new gemming, new mid-soles, new leather heel blocks and leather heel top lifts.

I like how you found a way to make the shoe tree fit snug. The sanding of the leather is something I want to get better at.
Thank you! Just be careful with sanding. Practice on some cheap shoes or old shoes you're not afraid to ruin the first few times. It's not always appropriate, and it doesn't always work. Don't sand too deep, escpecially on stressed areas like the vamps. This is why I left most of the cracks alone in the Johnston & Murphy semi-brogue Oxfords in the "Re-dye, crack removal, half soles, & heels on J&M Oxfords" video from 10/7/2022. Beware that if they're corrected grain leather, you'll sand through the coating and it probably won't look right afterwards.

I understand the alternate pronunciation. In Italy Magnanni is pronounced Monyanni. A form of magnano which means locksmith or blacksmith. Many people would not realize that this is a Spanish company. In Spain it is pronounced the way the owner does.

Magnanni would be pronounced Mañani in Spanish. I thought it was an Italian company.
@@TheGrmany69 you know, I thought so too, so I wrote it out and asked my wife to say it. My wife only speaks Spanish and I butcher the language. But she and her friends all said it just like the owner. Turns out this is one of the few times a g is pronounced.

Good job Bob! I don't think you need to beat yourself up too much over not being able to get rid of the creasing on the vamp. My experience has been that even if you were able to, the creasing would come right back up the moment someone flexes the shoes whilst walking.

Great job Robert, turned out really nice, although I got to admit I was getting a bit nervous watching you sand the back of the shoe near the stitches. Also good job with fixing the toe counter on the right shoe, I was wondering if shaving a piece of candle to fit that toe box and pressing it in with a shoe tree would be easier.

Hi Robert I've seen Bedos wetting the shoes completely and fill the shoes with newspaper and put them in the fridge I believe for the night MAGNANNI is my favorite shoe Brands very stylish and quality is good

Hi Bob, great “experiment” as always. I just wonder, would it possible to reduce the creasing on corrected grain leather using wet cloth and iron?
An iron? I've never considered that... I've seen Justin Fitzpatrick of the Shoe Snob Blog use a heat gun and massage the leather (I did massage the leather while it was damp and it had the 2nd pair of tight fitting shoe trees in them). It seems like it would be difficult to use an iron, with the shoes being rounded and the iron being flat. Just remember, corrected grain has a coating on it, so it will proabably melt at some point. Also, heat is one of leather's greatest enemies for longevity, so I'd be careful with it.
Good job Robert. In addition to that maybe to firstly use saddle soap with the shoe trees would have been a good idea ?
It might have helped as the saddle soap would wet the leather more, but since I did the Leather Talk interview with Andy Vaugn, I use Saddle Soap a lot less. Between all of the additives in it (at least in the Kiwi brand) and it's pH effect on leather, I just don't prefer it as much, escpecially on leather like this that doesn't need the cleaning. I'm not saying I'm right, but just explaining why I didn't use it here and why you don't see me use Saddle Soap as much anymore.

Nice work Robert. Love the patina that is on the shoe. Was it natural or done by the previous owner?
I don't know for sure, but I believe it was a factory patina. By the looks of the shoe, I would be surprised if the owner ever did anything to them care-wise. I couldn't see someone taking the time and/or money to apply a patina and them letting them get that bad, considering they weren't worn very much by the looks of the soles.

Great work and an amazing find!!! Just a tip: Do check out the "Brighton Gentleman" on UA-cam. He has a video on steam shrinking shoe uppers. That could really help with the rolls on the vamp.
Yes, I have seen those. I'll tell you why I shy away from that: I learned from Andy Vaugn, owner of Pure Polish Products that heat is one of the greatest enemies of longevity in leather. I don't doubt that his steaming method would help, I'm afrait it would change the shape/size of the shoe to where it wouldn't fit correctly. With these going on eBay, I wouldn't want to create a fitment issue. Secondly, and I will admit I do NOT know this to be true, but my belief is it would be a temporary fix, and the creasing/wrinkling would probably return after the first wear anyway. So even though I didn't get them all out, I felt like I got the most benefit that I could with the least possible damage or long term harm to the leather. Again, I'm not saying I'm right or have all the answers, but that was my mindset. That steaming method would to me be more ideal to try on a pair of shoes that I have "nothing to loose" on. By that I mean a pair that are not so valuable, or a pair that the owner would throw them away if I couldn't improve them.
@@CobblerBob I tried it on an old pair of AE McTavish. It actually worked quite well! Of course, I can't tell what it did to the leather internally. They've been holding up so far. I totally see your point. I do however think (with an older pair that you paid little money for) it's worth finding out of it does not just make a significant difference.

Just an fyi. The heels aren't stacked leather but a compressed paper.
You may be right, I wouldn't be able to tell without tearing them apart as I'm not as familair with Magnanni's construction methods as I am with say Allen Edmonds, but from the outisde they APPEARED to be stacked leather because of the seams in the heels.
