In the East Asian nation of China, there exists an ethnic Russian minority who have been living in China from as early as the 17th century. The Russian Chinese are estimated to number around 16,000 people and are primarily concentrated in China's northern provinces. The first arrival of Russians in China can be traced back to the 1600s, when Russian war captives were brought to China during the Qing dynasty and were later incorporated into several Chinese military divisions. The Russians resided mainly in the northeastern areas of the city of Beijing and were referred to as "Albazinians'' by surrounding Chinese ethnic groups. During the 18th century, some Russian refugees fled to China due to religious persecution in Tsarist Russia and were allowed to settle in the northernmost parts of China's Xinjiang province. These Russian refugees were referred to as "Jirjaks'' by the surrounding population and were known for their devout adherence to Orthodox Christianity and for rarely interacting with others outside their own communities. In the year 1896, the Russian Empire was granted a concession by the Qing Dynasty of China to build and operate the Chinese Eastern Railway across the Manchuria region of northeastern China in exchange for a secret military alliance against the Japanese empire. The Russians selected a small village called "Harbin'' as their base of administration over the railway and gradually began forming large scale settlements in the area. Harbin eventually grew into a large city and became the economic hub of northeastern China and an international metropolis. The city of Harbin very much resembled the cities found in mainland Russia at the time and was greatly influenced by the Russian language, architecture, and Russian Orthodox Christianity. During the Russian revolution of 1917, a large number of Russian refugees fled to China, particularly to the city of Harbin, in an effort to escape from political instability, economic hardships, and persecution. After the establishment of the Soviet Union in the year 1922, the vast majority of the Russian refugees became stateless and eventually left China to settle in other countries that offered a stable political environment and better economic opportunities. A small minority of the Russian refugees remained in China and were given Chinese citizenship, following the founding of the People’s Republic of China by the Chinese Communist Party in the year 1949. Although the majority of the Russian Chinese can still speak the Russian language, they all speak the Chinese language fluently and have been fully assimilated into mainstream Chinese society. The vast majority of the Russian Chinese community have also widely adopted traditional Chinese names in an effort to acculturate with the surrounding Chinese population. The Russian Chinese are known for their unique cuisine, which mostly consists of traditional Russian dishes but also includes influences from other surrounding Chinese ethnic groups. Bread and pastries are popularly consumed by the Russian Chinese community and are often accompanied by fried dishes and traditional Russian desserts.

Could explain why the Russian empire wanted to annex that area.
@@Alex-pj8nz The Russian Empire wanted to annex the Amur region of Qing China due to its strategic location and abundant natural resources. Moreover, the Russian Empire perceived the Amur region as a buffer zone, providing defense against potential threats from China and other neighboring powers. Annexing the area allowed Russia to establish a stronger military presence and secure its border. I hope this answers your question. Feel free to ask any more questions.
Why are there no Chinese on the Russian border? Because they were all killed by the Russian invaders.
Would you please make a video about the german Russians. There are still ethnic germans who live in Russia. In Kazakhstan is also a big german community

There used to be a large Russian community living in Harbin before WW2. Unfortunately most of them fell victim to the Japanese and their infamous Unit 731 during the war.
Some 30% of Unit 731 victims were russians, and also were alot of koreans and mongols.
WW2 was too cruel.
@@twizz2955 the Japanese were cruel.
the Japs offered to settle the Jews in Harbin. how generous of them to offer territory that didn't belong to them.
My family fled to China after the Russian revolution and settled in Kharbin where my mother was born. They stayed there till 1948 and then retuned back to the USSR. However, my grand father stayed in Kharbin till 1960-s and then went to Australia. Other relatives went to Europe and a vast majority settled in the US.
@@s._3560 Tania Vestak was born in Tianjin, China in 1940 and migrated to Australia in 1950. She was later crowned Miss Australia and then won the Miss International Beauty Contest in the US in 1962. In 1960, there was a later migration of Russians to Australia from China. The Great Leap Forward had failed leading to mass starvation. The Chinese government allowed people to leave China to reduce the number of empty mouths. Russians from Harbin settled in Brisbane where they retained their language and Russian Orthodox faith.

Years ago I had a young woman joining our team at work who’s name was as Russian as it comes (first and last) but when she walked in she was about as Chinese as it comes. (Accent, mannerisms, features etc)
She was very cool about it, told me her parents were from each side, raised her in China and her mum let her dad pick her name, she was used to people being surprised, even in China.
I always feel cheated when I meet people like this, lol. Either I meet them first and find they have a name from a different ethnicity, or I see the name first and when I meet them they are a completely different ethnicity to their name.
There is no surprise when you met someone who looks like typical Chinese but he/she is not a Chinese by nationality, but fluent in Russia or other languages.
There are many ethnic tribes in Far East.
And there are times you met someone who is not Chinese by nationality but identify themselves as Chinese Ethnicity.
To be honest, its quite normal.
The word is a big place with many unique people for sure.
It certainly was a surprise meeting her though, both her first and last name were Russian but she was Chinese in look, language and upbringing, raised by her Chinese mother and Russian father in China and moved to Australia for her education.
It wasn’t some insurmountable shock, just momentary and a good lesson in never making assumptions for my younger self.
She was more surprised that I recognised each name as being Russian in origin.
Yes, definitely shouldn’t expect people to conform to our expectations.
You expect someone to see the race you expected by reading name and came another race and that got you cheated? Are you sick ? You definitely all westerns racists just in blood🤮
Спасибо!

So interesting! I always wonder about the borders of these countries and how they interact with one another. Both are such rich cultures but it's not often you come across this information (unless you search for it specifically. We learned a lot in school but that being said, there's only so much you can cover. You would spend a lifetime trying to discover it all and understand the complexities. These short clips are great to help get an idea. I felt so stupid when one of my Indian friends mentioned a holiday destination she went to and I'd never heard of it 😅but it was the same the other way too, places she'd never heard of. We all have so much to learn from each other and not just what we're told on television. If everybody travelled to 3 new countries by the time they turned 25, the world would be a better place. Those who can't travel would still experience cultural exchange with visitors.
there is more interesting to find out about russian far east which was chineese till middle of 19 century

And within these 40% of world population, there are many small tribes.

Russians always called themselves Russian since Rus was founded. Muscovites was a foreign name for the subjects of the Duchy of Muscovy, which was populated by Russians. There are many historical documents which confirm that Russians called themselves by that name since the time of ancient Rus (not Kievan Rus, which is a recent term introduced by 19th century Russian historians to refer to the period when the capital of Rus was in Kiev, which wasn't always). And many lands of ancient Rus are in Russia, including its first capitals Ladoga and Novgorod.
pretty wrong, manchurian are not a single ethnicity, they are mostly han chinese, its a military groups made up with chinese and mongols mostly, its is not a ethnicity, also manchus have very small numbers in northeast china area, a few hundreds of thousands in entire northeast china, while there were more than 100 million han chinese there, so those russian chinese are assimilated to han chinese, not others

As a Harbin guy, I would like to share few thoughts: 1. the Russian ethnic groups are not secret in China, they are one of the "56 ethnic groups" (In fact, its more than 60 now), the guy at the 0:05 is called "彼得洛夫董德升", who he is an actor/social media influencer; 2. the Manchuria map at 1:18 is wrong if you considering the history point the video was refering to 3. the European Immigaration wave to Harbin was not just Russian, but also lots of other East Europeans including Jews. 4. Russian influnced foods are common in Harbin, but not just inside Russian communities. These pastry, sausages, soups are consumed by all peoples in Harbin. Also, Russian communities as of right now only exist in villages, and the food they eat are actually very Chinese.

There are also native Russians who look oriental. Not surprising with the long borders and long history between the nations.
Those native Siberians have been living there for hundreds or thousands of years. Russians conquered their land. Just like Europeans conquered the Americas.
A famous Chinese celebrity from the Xibo (Siberian) ethnicity is Tong Liya. Extremely beautiful

First of all, they are Chinese, and their way of thinking is no different from that of the Han people. Chinese culture has a strong influence.
Han Chinese or ethnic Chinese are descended from various ethnic groups assimilated into Han Chinese population through the history of China. Ethnic groups mentioned in Chinese records like the Xiongnus, Rouran and Xianbei are assimilated into Han Chinese population and their descendants are now Han Chinese.

If i remember correctly, when China was at war with Russia, the emperor captured the cossacs from Albazin and offered them to become his personal bodyguards in exchange to be spared and have a land and budhist temple to be remade as church. Actually the first "Russian" community in China was the wò luó sī 斡罗思 people brought by mongolians to China, serving in the court of the Yuan dynasty in the 13th and 14th century.
Do you mean slaves?
@@prometheusboat Not exactly, more like serfs. Mongolian Empire incorporated Russian kingdoms, so all people became regular citizens of empire (in modern Russia even exist joke, that during Mongolian authorities everyone paid tax less than nowadays, 4% vs 13%, so maybe Russia need to rejoin with Mongolia again 😂) and had own rights (different categories had different rights, most rights had priests; part of Mongolians were Christians also). But Empire always could take some people and send somewhere to work there (of course empire not asked opinion of people). And Empire did it permanently, especially for army. As example read how Mongolia captured Baghdad (modern Iraq), in Mongolian forces only minority represent mongols, majority were misc other nations, from russians to chinese. Chinese were engineers who built siege weapons, Russians were smiths who repaired weapons/armor and so on.
@@juliap.5375 if 'more life serfs", then definitely slaves. Just like the serfs in the Rus of that period. What job they did is irrelevant. Taken and made to work without being asked or having the possibility of leaving.
@@prometheusboat then all of europe was enslaved as peasants

These ethnic Russians are more Chinese than some of the mandarins in Beijing. One of them became an excellent Sukhoi fighter pilot and a top officer in the People's Air Force. He helped close the deal to buy a completed SU 27 assembly line for China. By the way, there is also a small group of Jews in China. They are the descendants of old Shanghai merchants and immigrants who escaped the clutches of the German Gestapo during World War II.
The Jews of World War II did not stay in China because they wanted to establish a country in Northeast China. It is true that there are still Jews in China, who should be traced back to the beginning of the Song Dynasty hundreds of years ago, saying that they originally did business and became rich, and then received a reward from the emperor to stay, and slowly multiplied into families. However, there is a branch behind, because of self-interest supporting the rebels and participating in the massacre, more than a hundred years later, the descendants of those who were slaughtered were wiped out, the Zhejiang branch, and the two families that did not participate in the war still exist in Henan and Shaanxi.

Why are they known as Russian Chinese, not Chinese Russian? Indian in Malaysia are known as Malaysian Indian, Chinese in Thailand are known as Thai Chinese.
Thanks for your question @FrankiePo89.
In many cases, when describing individuals of dual backgrounds, the ethnicity is mentioned before the nationality. This helps to emphasize their ethnic identity and heritage. For example, we commonly use terms like "Chinese American" or "Indian British."
However, the term "Chinese Russian" can also be used to refer to the ethnic Russian community which reside in China.
I hope I have answered your question. Feel free to ask any other questions.

When two countries border each other, logically there are bound to be intermarriages and inter cultural influences after hundred of years. I saw a video on village south of Yunnan. If you don't tell me it is in China, I would have thought those buildings and people are from Thailand!
wait. As a Chinese person, I can't tell the difference between a Chinese and a Thai person. how do you even tell?
In fact, the ancestors of the Thai people originated from southern China. They migrated to present-day Thailand, Laos, and other areas in the 11th century and assimilated with the local Mon-Khmer ethnic groups, giving rise to the modern Thai people.
Most people dont seem to understand this fact and accuse the other of “cultural appropriation,” not knowing that they share some common history. They seem to think that their culture manifested out of nowhere.
