Rockhounding the Dugway Geode Beds and Finding a Large Amethyst Geode!!

- I spent a day rockhounding the Dugway Geode Beds along the old Pony Express Trail in Western Utah. This was my first trip out in several years and was expecting the area to be pretty picked over, but was pleasantly surprised that I was able to fill a bucket in just a few hours and found several large geodes as well.
There are two main pits at the geode beds, and I have found that the first main pit has the standard smaller (baseball size or smaller) blue and white quartz lined geodes. The second pit has the larger and more banded geodes. The second pit is where I found the large amethyst geode.
More info on the Geode beds can be found here: geology.utah.g...

Another really good video. Thanks for posting your beautiful finds and cutting them open.
WOW! Glad you got to see the Onaqui herd, as well! I only went once a couple years ago and mostly got small thundereggs. These are INCREDIBLE!!! Awesome Cabs, too! Just got a machine and I hope I get get some nice geode pieces made. Any tips?
Thanks! I have found the larger geodes/pieces that are good for cutting cabs are way more abundant in the second pit (GPS in the video description). I typically find a hole that someone else has dug and continue digging it and have been pretty successful.
Gorgeous! I live in Moab and wish I could get up there to hunt, but bone on bone osteoarthritis in both knees. 😢 HOPEFULLY after my surgeries I'll get up that way. ❤
I live in Chicago and we try to get to Utah every other year. We will be there next summer. I don’t know if I can wait!! I want to jump in my car right now, no stops!🤩 Thank you for sharing :)
That amethyst dugway is something else!
that big one is insane!
Georgeous!! Were you at the main site or the 2nd location?
I was mostly at the main location for the smaller geodes, but the larger geodes including the amethyst came from the second location.
I'm sure I've come across geodes before but don't think I've gotten the eye to see them yet. Lovely finds, thanks for sharing
Great video all the way around, from what you chose to share with us from your exploring, digging, cutting, polishing to the info you generously share in the description.
Thank you!!
