I've been collecting rocks for the last 15+ years and would like to share some highlights of my adventures! I am not a Geologist or expert, just a hobbyist that loves the thrill of the hunt, exploring to find nature's hidden (and not so hidden) treasures. From exploring to collecting to polishing and displaying my finds, I hope you find enjoyment in this content!
I began making spheres in 2022 and am very much still learning the craft. I love being able to turn a rock from the ground into a piece of art!
Any GPS locations provided are to general areas, and give you a good starting point for exploring, although I try to be as accurate in providing locations as possible.

Rockhounding the Silver Island Mountains near Wendover, Utah for beautiful seam and moss agate! GPS: 40°47'56.8"N 114°00'01.9"W - This was my starting point. From here I explored the roads to the East, towards the foothills of the mountains. I stopped at a bunch of different areas along here and found agate in several locations. It really is a cool place to explore!
Making a Sphere with Slag Glass!
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 місяці тому
I purchased some mining slag glass at a rock shop in Springdale, Utah (just outside of Zion National Park) to try making a sphere. Slag glass is a by-product of metal ore smelting processes and its color comes from the different minerals present during the smelting process. It was a fun and challenging process to make the sphere; I was concerned about the glass breaking or cracking. But in the ...
Rockhounding Agate at Brian Head, Utah (and Cutting a Sphere)!

Went down to Brian Head, Utah to collect agate. But first I stopped by Cedar Breaks National Monument, which feels like a mini Bryce Canyon. It was definitely worth the stop! The agate at Brian Head has a lot of blacks and reds, and I was able to cut a sphere with a piece I found on this trip. Sifting for Red Beryl at Topaz Mountain, Utah!
Переглядів 7482 місяці тому
Had a great day rockhounding the public (free) location of the Topaz Mountain Amphitheater for the elusive Red Beryls! I set up at the base of a large rock pile about 2/3rds of the way up on the Southwest side of the amphitheater and found quite a few sifting through the rubble. I even found a few without sifting, just by scanning the ground! I was there the week after some crazy storms went th...

Polishing Honeycomb Calcite from the Uinta Mountains of Northeast Utah!
I like the way you laid out the video. I am thinking of doing some cutting and polishing again here soon, and I like how you show the rock from being found up through the finished pieces. The animals were a big plus too. I actually got a shot of the geese in my last video. Thanks!
Thanks! I appreciate it!
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. You are one of my favorites.
Beautiful!!! thanks for sharing.
Awesome pet wood and awesome scenery to match! Looks like it was pretty windy eh.
That site is beautiful. Thanks for showing your finds polished up. They are so cool!
man those are some aweseom finds :) also you may have done a video like this before but have you considered making a video on polishing rocks :)
I definitely need to do more polishing videos!
@@utah_rockhound i would love that espesially guides and if you can do one with budget machines that would be awesome. thanks for all the content and great info :)
Very cool.
This was exciting.
I've been watching your videos as total hype for my trip there in late December. Thanks for posting all these.
Nice Work! ....you really brought out the beauty within this wonderful garnet! Cheers and Blessings! CIAO!
Thank you!
Beautiful finds!!!
I wish that so many of the Utah sites weren't so far south.
Rock Hounding in the snow. Now that's dedication!
Get yourself a proper stone chisel. There are many different types. That's the misuse of a screwdriver.
Your channel is now my favorite here on UA-cam I love how you find all these amazing minerals in Utah and it has helped me more less inspired me to make a solid decision that this is what I want to do I'm going to go after these minerals and also gold and meteorites there's so much here in Utah. Thank you so much for the content you have gifted people like me you're amazing human being. Is this what you do full time? Wow it'd be cool to hear a story about how you got started and everything
Thanks for that! So glad you're enjoying the videos! This is just a hobby for me, although I wish I could do it full time. For now its my stress reliever and I get out as much as I can when I can. This journey started several years ago after taking a geology class in college and learning about things that could be found in Utah. I then bought the 'Gem Trails of Utah' book and used it as an excuse to get out and explore areas that I wouldn't normally go, plus it gave my young kids a chance to play in the dirt and look for sparkly rocks! Over time, it has grown as I have slowly been able to acquire equipment and learn some of the lapidary side of the hobby. I still have so much to learn and lots of places still to explore...but so far it's been a pretty great journey!
What!! This spot looks incredible.
I was just there, but you’re going to have to go to Fallon Nevada and check out their Wonderstone. It’s a little bit harder.
Nice looking stones!
Any recommendations to tumble? Looks almost too soft for a tumbler
I've actually never had good luck tumbling wonderstone due to it's softness, I've never gotten more than a satin polish from it. You can only run the early stages for about 3 days, or the stone grinds to nothing!
Corncob Media and a lot o tumbler after one day each on stage one and two in a rotary tumbler...
Is this a public or private quarry?
This spot is public.
Wow - those are amazing stones & so gorgeous polished! Utah is an amazing place.
Ahhh wonderstone. One of my favorites! I’ve made so much wire wrapped jewelry with this stuff after tumbling. It’s too beautiful. Lovely video! I wish I had your equipment! Maybe one day!
One of those had a heart ♥️, which would be so cool as a cab!
Just went yesterday. Such beautiful views. We had a fantastic experience, thank you for sharing!
Nice work!
Gorgeous cab!
Tank you, from morrocco
Read from another comment that you sometimes go with people from an organized group from FB. Too bad I don’t have that app 😭 otherwise I’d be very happy to join on the outings. What is it you’re finding in this video? Thanks for always being willing to share the coords. As a solo rockhounder, and doing all my own research for UT, ID, WY, MT, AZ & NV rock trip locations, it’s nice to be thrown some freebies every now and then! Great vid, beautiful finds!
Yeah its a fun group to go with, they get permission to go to some cool spots! In the video I was finding mainly conichalcite (green) and chrysocolla (light blue) on quartz, as well as malachite, azurite, and other copper associated minerals.
@@utah_rockhoundvery neat and gorgeous specimens! Were these locations places that the group got permission to be at? I’m using a BLM map and these two mines don’t fall into public lands. Just curious, I obviously would never want to step on any claim owners/ private land owners toes. To your knowledge, if you know that info. I know you included the coords but, just to be on the safe side.
My understanding is that they are patented mining claims and the group had permission to go there.
You're going to need to show me where that stuff is at. I looked all over up there and I couldn't find a thing. I was probably in the wrong areas! All those specimens are beautiful!
The GPS coordinates for Gold Hill in the video description will get you to the parking area. From there, you will see a trail leading South up the mountain. It's a steep hike, but once you reach the top you will see the main collecting area. The colorful minerals are on the southwest side of the 'pit.' (40°09'40.2"N 113°48'22.7"W is the pit). Good luck!
@utah_rockhound Thank you.
Heck yea awesome stuff thanks for sharing heavy pans brother
Thanks for watching!
Are the gps coordinate locations available to the public?
They are in the video description.
that is simply amzing i love the Blues and greens mixed in with that quartz 🤌
Agreed! I am a sucker for that light blue Chrysocolla!
@ o man exactly thanks for sharing :) if I could sub a hundred times I would
Good video! What group were you with? Do you ever do meet ups?
Thanks! The group is a Facebook group called 'Utah Rock Collectors.' They organize field trips to some really cool spots. I personally don't do meet ups, I'm usually just along for the ride lol!
I keep wanting to meet you, but I couldn’t make the trip to gold hill. maybe someday anyway, beautiful colors
Way cool sphere! I want to start making them. In the meantime I tumble polish. What do you do with all your scraps from cutting the chunks down to your preform?
Thanks! The bigger pieces I slab and cut cabs from. The smaller stuff goes into my tumblers.
Thank you for making these videos. it makes me want to actually get out and explore. I'm speaking it into existence here. "I'm going to build a life where I get to do this kind of adventuring."
We love the swell! Just spent a couple of weekends there!
That’s great! Such a cool area!
Always look forward to your posts. Your always very generous with your GPS locations. That is very helpful. I’ve had some great trips. Thanks to you .l always save your videos.
Thanks! I’m glad you find them helpful!
Looks like a most of this was found on Last chance road. I haven't see the place you were at though. Cool finds and good work creating what you do.
You went East of your coordinates? Have you ever explored to the West? Did you go very far north or hike very far up a mountain?
I haven't explored to the West, other than going to the entrance of Danger Cave. I didn't go too far North, and didn't hike more than about halfway up the mountain. There seemed to be lots of agate among the crumbly outcrops along the foothills.
Great job on cutting the bigger ones in cubes and spheres...what an awesome idea! Don't recall seeing too many in shapes other than their natural shape? 🤭 The blackish sphere is beautiful 👏🔥
Are they agatized?
No. The shells are calcite in limestone I believe.
I had such a great time there
I really enjoy seeing the cool things you make with the stuff you collect. I spent my whole summer about 10 minutes (by 4wheeler) from my house after discovering a giant piece of petrified wood sticking out of a hillside 6’ off the trail that I’ve rode on for 10yrs. Now I have about 100 pieces of petrified wood and about 50 fossilized shells and a few things that I don’t know what they are but they look cool. Thanx 4 the video.
I always enjoy your videos and unlike some your very generous with information on locations. Thanks again .
Thanks! I really appreciate that!
I’ve made it before in my Honda pilot.
Could I make it to this location in a sedan or is this only accessable with a 4 wheel drive vehical or just high clearance?
When I was collecting there was a couple in a Subaru Outback collecting as well. I would recommend high clearance but I think it could be managed with a sedan if you're careful!
How do you get permission to go to the mine?
I go with the 'Utah Rock Collectors' club. They get permission from the mine owners to collect the dumps.
@@utah_rockhound tried to find the club, do u have a link??
@@utah_rockhound I’m still in town for 2 weeks, wanna meet up and go together? I just did blueberry azurite below Moab, the San Rafael swell , dugway, and a few more along the way😀
So we’re gonna go up by Lynn, there are garnets and staurolite , probably next weekend if you would like to go with us or meet up there
@@JonesNit117 It's a Facebook group/club. If you search the "Utah Rock Collectors" group on there you should find them.
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you! 😊
