FINALLY!!! The video of actual testing I've been searching for. Most other videos seem to trash the mesh tape, but it's always based on ease of installation or subjective opinion. Well done sir!
Good stuff Guy! Just as we suspected, hot mud and fiberglass mesh for the win on this test.🏆 I am surprised the paper tape did as well as it did in this test though... Looking forward to Part 2!🔥👍🏻
Looks like the mesh tape with hot mud was the best in flex test. It had the best adhesion to drywall and the mesh was way stronger than the others. I think we all know that any bending of a mud joint is going to crack without the industry creating a mix that flexes. Hence my suggestion of adding a liquid latex to a dry mix. It may be a complete failure but then again it may surprise you. Remember me if you change the drywall world as we know it. In my latex to cement tests ive found the sweet spot to be around 19 % latex additive. It works easy. Stays consistant. No clumping. And is easy to ramp without self leveling.
My personal experience, mostly on high end homes, in towns such as Edgartown or Chilmark, has been durabond 90 + fiberglass mesh tape for factory recessed seams excluding “butt” seams (aka “flats”). On flats I use paper tape, turned upside down, and aforementioned, durabound 90. I’ve used durabond for just over four decades. Unlike “mud”, durabond expands during drying. Perfect for first coat applications. It’s similar to plaster. I use it for corner bead+ any gaps or holes left during sheetrock installation.
We're using fiberglass mesh or tape (fibafuse like) in Europe since eons. USA always seem to be decades behind in terms of construction materials for some reason, probably because of changes that have to be made in the manufacture/technological processes.
I’m in Canada and we, as well as the Americans, have had mesh tape for almost 50 years and fibafuse for about 20. I don’t know why you Europeans think you’re so much better than the rest of world, because you’re not, just snobbier.
This channel is actually worth subscribing to if this is a ProjectFarm-type channel for drywall. I have hot mud Easy Sand 20 and just bought some green-lid general purpose yesterday and I've been completely underwhelmed by the general purpose taping mud. I was thinking about trying mesh so I was checking out UA-cam and came across this. I'm definitely going to pick up some mesh right now and going back to my hot mud, and no, I don't have sanding issues with it and I do like a surface that isn't so fragile and porous when it's finished. I'd be interested to see if there is any consistently quantifiable difference between 5, 20, 45, and 90 minute Easy Sand hot mud.
#doitright. I love what you’re doing here Guy. Would enjoy seeing what crack tape does in these tests since it is claimed to be stronger and have more sheer strength than other tapes. Also like the idea of the mud tests when used in various combinations like 20min, all purpose and finishing light weight mud on top.
Cool, Glad to hear your input Lance. I actually want to try these different mud combos out, so hopefully others like the idea too. I'll keep track of all the suggestions, so thanks. And thanks for the hashtag.
Thanks. I'll make note of that. I've thought of creating a gun channel, but with competition like Hickock, Plinkster and Big Demo ranch, it would be a tough row to how, and NONE of their videos get monetized, so I probably won't, except on Patreon. And I have to upload those somewhere, then share them to Patreon, so might be tricky, but I'll figure it out. My put the gun videos on Vimeo or something.
Im a little more than half way thru and what im seeing is the mud failing way before the tape. The paper coming unglued at the beginning was what i expected. Id be interested in seeing you mix up some mud and adding latex to it. Ive been experimenting adding latex to cement mixes and have had amazing results.
How about adding latex( Elmer's glue) for flexibility? Houses like mine that have poor foundations that shift depending upon whether we are having a wet period or a dry period. I have been told by a labtech working at national gypsum that they add latex to their mud for use on modular homes.
@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY just last week did several patches and joints in a room and made most of the mistakes you mentioned, then today watched you video, not too late though I have several more rooms to go, I really do appreciate your knowledge and your sharing it !
Before i watch I've been arguing in favor of the fiberglass mesh tape for years and just yesterday someone had a good combatant to my argument that they use paper tape for corners because it leaves a much crisper edge in the corners and mesh tape on flat surfaces which makes perfect sense. Im by no means a professional but over the years of drywalling for novic use I've always used the mesh tape but after his argument i think i will do it that way for a much nicer finished.
Temperature test? Old house test? I drywalled over a popcorn ceiling (5 rooms) in an unused, unheated 1950's home with 1/4 drywall. I used Fibafuse for the 1st time here. Now I am getting hairline cracks in some joints, plus some of the joints I sanded flat seem to have grown new contours. I understand I am fighting multiple issues here...heat, old rafters, and also going over popcorn texture...maybe using 1/4 is a problem as well? Do you think paper tape or mesh would have been a better choice? Maybe it was the mud? Looking to give my customer an answer!
I think 1/4" is a bad idea for an overlay. I use 1/2" as it's much stronger, less likely to move, buckle, etc. But going over popcorn isn't ideal as the popcorn is spongy and I always put about double the amount of screws in because of that. Did you use green label all purpose over the fibafuse or a lightweight AP? I hate finishing in an unheated house as using artificial heat, ie, mushroom or torpedo propane or diesel heaters puts TONS of moisture in the air, then you have the windows closed to retain the heat and the heat is mostly up high, while it freezes down low, although not for just a ceiling overlay. So that could be one issue. I suspect the wrong mud though, or maybe not enough screws. But it may be impossible to say for sure in an old house especially.
#DoItRight Enjoy your style and experience. Please test painting barrier edge tapes. Paint “barrier” tapes are green, blue, masking, etc. Some work!?? Some work when pulled at a specific time. One claims it can be forgotten until Rip Van Winkle awakens?? What paint barrier for a clean edge is best,....best for paint but how about mud edge in those situations. Thx!
Guy, I like your videos... low key, non patronizing, and astute. What I would like to see tested is drywall subjected to flooding, with the various compounds and tapes. Usually normal flooding goes down in a couple of days, so maybe a 12, 24 and 36 hour test may be useful. Or, even an "overflow" time factor, where washing machines drains, bathtubs, overflow for a shorter time, so maybe even say, 2, 4, 6 hour tests, with all the small test pieces like in this video.
David, what would you be looking to learn in a test like that? How long before it falls off a ceiling? How long before it sags and requires replacing? Or??? Thanks, Guy
You know those small grooves in paneling? what would you use to cover those. I know your a mesh fan, and fibafuse looks like it rips too easy but it is thinner. If I had that fiber additive i may try that but I don't know if I can buy that. What say you? Hot mud looks like it actually cracks less, but what would you put for a tape?
But the mesh and hot mud didn’t separate at all which means to me as a super novice whatever I may attach to that wall be it closet organizer it’s gonna hold those hot babies in place for the long haul, IJS (I’m just saying) Hey @thekiltedguy what’s your thoughts on my analogy?

for mud max test it against simply white glue or carpenters glue, I think mud max is just white glue, but I hear guys like to also use it to get rid of porosity/air bubbles out of their mud
tape vs mesh, fiba,,, 40 years taping in Ontario Canada,,,, each one has its place,,,, but a lot also has to do with whether your a machine taper vs a hand taper(machine as in boxes, bazooka, power sanders, expensive angle heads, nail spotters etc) Your not going to run chit rock through your machines. Only time I might use chitrock/hotmud is on a patch job or to prefill with half and half with white glue added sometimes (half mud half hot mud) paper is more for the new home that is going to settle. Something may crack or shift but its less visible with the paper compared to the mesh tape. Mesh tape it is more visible. Ill toss in building standards or call backs. huge builders or drywall companies that employ hundreds of employees learn over time which products give the less call backs....paper wins I find most arguments are with the newb taper, or worst of all, the basement king taper who brags his basements have never cracked out using mesh. And you always have to explain its bc the basement has settled...Mesh has its place, but it must be used in conjunction with hotmud which is why a lot of pros dont bother with it Fibafuse I use and love it for flat tapes only, shows where those air bubbles are when you run the zook,,, Its awesome for receptacle repairs bc it has a low sanding profile. And,,, it does replace the mesh tape where you might of pulled it out for damaged drywall try a half and half mix for the pull test,,, even taping mud vs all purpose vs topping mud (cgc products green box, red box ,machine mud) Im liking the certainteed all purpose red box as of late, needs a stronger sanding grit and talent :)
