Come to find out about getting a even cooking area put the smokestack right below the cooking area . This way close to the smokestack you won’t have a cold spot in the pit .

Personally as an old equipment operator, you have a great machine here. I tend to lean on the CAT side of excavators but John Deere is right there. I always loved the CAT 320. Very good all round machine. Here is a tip you must learn. Use your finger tips to control the sticks. Never get a full hand of grip on the sticks. You will have much more control especially when fine tuning or in tight places.

A friend of mine tried running my 3000lb mini ex and he held the controls with a death grip. Told him the same as you suggest and he was amazed at the difference. I'm thinking he will be better with his backhoe controls as well.

Looks like that machine is set up with a SAE control pattern (backhoe controls). I would recommend changing it over to the ISO control pattern. There should be a lever somewhere, most likely under the seat to change the control pattern. Most full time excavator guys run ISO, I found it to be much more intuitive when I was learning. Whichever pattern you learn on will most likely be the one you prefer going forward. Give it a try, you might find you prefer the ISO controls. I sure did, seemed to make way more sense to my brain for some reason. Just feels more natural.

I jumped in head first, with very little experience....learned how to run the machine and cleared my own land.......something that 99.999999% of people would not do...and I'm being put down for it? Does that seem appropriate to you? Supportive? Friendly? Ask yourself how many times a day a person like myself gets put down in the comments....how would it make you feel to wake up every morning to being put down by folks?
How bout this: Boy Josh....when you started out running that excavator you were struggling...looks like ya got it figured out by the time you were done! Good Job! (example of constructive v/s destructive criticism for ya)

by-law officers and other officers came to a farm and asked the owner if they could inspect his farm, he thought he must comply to the legal artificial political personnel, so he volunteered to allow them to do their business on his property. for a few years they proceeded to accuse him of things he was doing are wrong, not to their liking and that he should do it the way they wanted, having to buy new things and changing building structures etc... he did everything they wanted. they then ordered him to shut the farm down, he had been running for over 40 yrs, never causing anyone any criminal intent, never causing damage and injury to anyone growing potatoes. so he got very angry at the legal by-law officer, just to act arrogant and totally mean, she said to him; if you had not allowed us on your property we would not have been able to do anything. the whole financial corporate legal civil political system, it's departments and services are businesses, that are only voluntary!
is the financial legal corporate system trying to hide that they are a business, that is only voluntary! should any corporation, business, service, have authority to force anything to do business in their "jurisdictional by-law authority" it's codes, rules? mcdonalds,? wendy;s? the corporate health department? the polls department? the lobbying department? licensing department etc... it's president and stock holders? popeye's chicken, it's stock holders? force your children to act as a slave to any corporation, business, service? this is what hitler did, stalin, lenin etc... the birth certificate is a corporate legal business, signed by the corporate registrar general, used as legal jurisdictional authority over any child and it's property, that has one. when any business wants to trick anyone to volunteer to their jurisdictional authority in their business, ask them to put in writing and send it to you. just state you do not want their business service, they may take you to court, before a jury of men and woman, with proof, state why you do not need the business service they offer. creatively remove the understanding(standing under) volunteering, consent into slavery, choose to be creatively free.
